Win–Win? : - A qualitative study of the franchisee's approach to the factors affecting profitability
Abstract Date: 8/6–2020 Level: Bachelor thesis in Business Administration, 15 cr Institution: School of Business, Society and Engineering, Mälardalen University Authors: Emil Jansson (96-10-02) Filip Blomqvist (98-02-07) Peter Gustavsson (95-06-25) Title: Win–Win? - A qualitative study of the franchisee's approach to the factors affecting profitability Tutor: Kerstin Nilsson Keywords: Franchise, Ledarskap, Effektivitet, Lönsamhet. Research questions: - How does the franchise concept affect profitability? - How does leadership affect profitability? - How does efficiency affect profitability? Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate and find out how the factors of franchise, leadership and efficiency affect the profitability of franchisees in the insurance industry. Method: In this study, a qualitative research methodology has been applied. The empirical data consists of eight semi-structured interviews. A deductive approach has been applied. Conclusion: Some off the factors that affect profitability are franchise, leadership and efficiency. These factors are not something that is actively worked on within the offices studied. In order to influence profitability, the offices need to actively work on these three factors in order for both the franchisee and the franchisor to achieve higher profitability and more favorable conditions

Topics in convex and mixed binary linear optimization
This thesis concerns theory, algorithms, and applications for two problem classes within the realm of mathematical optimization; convex optimization and mixed binary linear optimization. To the thesis is appended five papers containing its main contributions.
In the first paper a subgradient optimization method is applied to the Lagrangian dual of a general convex and (possibly) nonsmooth optimization problem. The classic dual subgradient method produces primal solutions that are, however, neither optimal nor feasible. Yet, convergence to the set of optimal primal solutions can be obtained by constructing a class of ergodic sequences of the Lagrangian subproblemsolutions. We generalize previous convergence results for such ergodic sequences by proposing a new set of rules for choosing the convexity weights defining the sequences. Numerical results indicate that by applying our new set of rules primal feasible solutions of higher quality than those created by the previously developed rules are achieved.
The second paper analyzes the properties of a subgradient method when applied to the Lagrangian dual of an infeasible convex program. The primal-dual pair of programs corresponding to an associated homogeneous dual function is shown to be in turn associated with a saddle-point problem, in which the primal part amounts to finding a solution such that the Euclidean norm of the infeasibility in the relaxed constraints is minimized. Convergence results for a conditional dual subgradient optimization method applied to the Lagrangian dual problem is presented. The sequence of ergodic primal iterates is shown to converge to the set of solutions to the primal part of the associated saddle-point problem.
The third paper applies a dual subgradientmethod to a general mixed binary linear program (MBLP). The resulting sequence of primal ergodic iterates is shown to converge to the set of solutions to a convexified version of the original MBLP, and three procedures for utilizing the primal ergodic iterates for constructing feasible solutions to the MBLP are proposed: a Lagrangian heuristic, the construction of a so-called core problem, and a framework for utilizing the ergodic primal iterates within a branch-and-bound algorithm. Numerical results for samples of uncapacitated facility location problems and set covering problems indicate that the proposed procedures are practically useful for solving structured MBLPs.
In the fourth paper, the preventive maintenance scheduling problem with interval costs is studied. This problem considers the scheduling of maintenance of the components in a multicomponent system with the objective to minimize the sum of the set-up and interval costs for the system over a finite time period. The problem is shown to be NP-hard, and an MBLP model is introduced and utilized in three case studies from the railway, aircraft, and wind power industries.
In the fifth paper an MBLP model for the optimal scheduling of tamping operations on ballasted rail tracks is introduced. The objective is to minimize the total maintenance costs while maintaining an acceptable condition on the ballasted tracks. The model is thoroughly analyzed and the scheduling problem considered is shown to be NP-hard. A computational study shows that the total cost for maintenance can be reduced by up to 10% as compared with the best policy investigated
Jahrhunderts.Architectur

Isotope labeling of proteins for spectroscopic studies
Protein structural dynamics have been closely tied to the molecular mechanisms controlling for example enzyme activities. In my work, I have mainly studied the bacteriophytochrome from Deinococcus radiodurans. Phytochromes are photoreceptors that monitor the level, intensity, duration and color of environmental light to regulate numerous fundamental photomorphogenic processes in plants, fungi, and bacteria. In order to monitor the dynamic nature of such proteins, they are preferably investigated in solution. NMR and IR spectroscopy are ideal techniques for studying proteins in solution, but can suffer from spectral overlap on larger systems. To investigate large proteins, such as the phytochromes studied in this thesis, biochemical modifications can be applied. Introduction of isotopes, either uniformly, amino acid-selectively or site-selectively make it possible to study the dynamics of large proteins even down to selected residues. In this thesis, I developed and applied uniform, amino acid-selective and site-selective methods to isotopically label proteins, primarily a bacteriophytochrome. Solution NMR and IR spectroscopy were then applied to probe the structural dynamics of these proteins. The investigations reveal both how structural heterogeneity couples to the photomodulation in phytochromes, and how isomerization of the chromophore is linked to the global structural rearrangement in the sensory receptor. Further, the bacteriophytochrome knot region was investigated, and the results suggest the knot as a novel signaling pathway in phytochromes. Site-selective isotope labeling, together with femtosecond IR spectroscopy, could also confirm an intermediate state in GFP fluorescent signaling. My work has enabled spectroscopic investigations to monitor active sites and structural dynamics of proteins in a highly selective manner. It revealed structural and dynamical information underpinning the function of phytochrome photoreceptors
Choral Works of Emil Hradecký
This thesis deals with the figure of contemporary Czech composer Emil Hradecký with a special respect to choral compositions. In the first chapter the author introduces Emil Hradecký as a mUSlC teacher, composer and publisher. In the following chapter she describes Hradecký's music work in general, inc1uding his methodological handbooks and instructive pieces. The core of the thesis is the part which focuses on Hradecký's choral works. It contains a complete list of his choral works and analysis of several works which il1ustrate his various compositional styles. The significance of this thesis is in its survey of Hradecký's choral works, especially due to the fact that a monograph about this composer has not been published yet. The author hopes that this thesis might contribute to extending of the general knowledge about this composer
