Paraoxonase-1 gene in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease investigation Q192R and L55M polymorphisms

One of the antioxidative systems against oxidative stress in human body is paraoxonase (PON) enzyme that protects low density lipoproteins (LDL) against oxidation. This study aimed to explore the polymorphisms on PON1, Q192R, L55M genes of patients with COPD. METHODS: DNAs extraction was obtained from blood samples of 50 patients diagnosed with COPD and 50 patients as a control group who were presented to emergency clinic. Genotypes were obtained with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and AIw I and Hsp92II restriction enzymes were used for Q192R and L55M polymorphisms, respectively. Analysis of data was done with the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference in Q192R polymorphism was found between the COPD patients and the control group (P=0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in L55M polymorphisms between the patient and control groups (P>0.05). Q192R polymorphism was significantly correlated with the PON1 gene and cigarette smoking; however other risk factors did not show any significant correlation with this polymorphism. Though L55M polymorphism was significantly correlated with family history and tuberculosis, there was no significant correlation with other risk factors. CONCLUSION: We believe that more studies are needed to study the correlation of L55M polymorphism with other factors
Endothelin-1 Lys198Asn and rs10478694 polymorphism in ischemic stroke.

Materials and Methods: Blood samples were isolated from 100 patients diagnosed with ischemic cerebrovascular diseases and Lys198Asn and rs10478694 polymorphism of Endothelin-1 gene from obtained DNAs by Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reactions Method (RT-PCR). Results: Forty-one patients in the patient group and 38 patients in the control group were found to be heterozygous for Lys198Asn. Thirty-nine patients in the patient group and 39 patients in the control group were found to be heterozygous for rs10478694. Lys198Asn was found to be homozygous mutant in 8 patients in the patient group and 9 patients in the control group. Rs10478694 was found to be homozygous mutant in 9 patients in the patient group and 7 patients in the control group. There was no significant difference in age and gender between patients with and without identified polymorphisms (p>0.05). In addition, smoking and alcohol use, presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was found not to be correlated with positivity of gene polymorphism. Conclusion: Lys198Asn and rs10478694 polymorphism of Endothelin-1 gene was found not to be correlated with ischemic cerebrovascular diseases

Objective: Renal infarction (RI), which is caused by sudden cessation of renal blood flow, is a rare disease. In this study, we planned to investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients diagnosed with renal infarction in the emergency department.
Material and Methods: Patients over the age of 18 who presented to the emergency department with abdominal/flank pain, nausea, and vomiting between 2010 and 2021 and were diagnosed with acute renal infarction in contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography were included in the study. The data of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as laboratory results of the patients, were recorded.
Results: A total of 38 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 61.8±18 years and 63.2% (n=24) were male. The most common complaints of the patients were abdominal pain (84.2%), flank pain (68.4%), and nausea-vomiting (50%). More rarely, patients complained about chest pain, dyspnea, and fever. Acute renal failure developed in 4 patients (10.5%). While only three (7.9%) of the patients had no known disease, the others had comorbidities such as hypertension (31.6%), ischemic heart disease (31.6%), previous thromboembolic events (31.6%), diabetes (26.3%), cancer (23.7%), heart failure (21.1%), and atrial fibrillation (18.4%). The most common cause of RI was cardioembolic events (44.7%), followed by hypercoagulability (28.9%), renal artery damage (15.8%), and idiopathic causes (10.5%).
Conclusion: Acute RI is a disease that is rarely detected in the emergency department. Because there is a lack of specific clinical findings, it is often overlooked or diagnosed late. Delay in diagnosis can significantly cause morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis of acute RI should be considered especially in patients with a high risk of thromboembolism and who present to the emergency department with complaints of unexplained abdominal or flank pain
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
