Connectedness Based on Strongly Preclosed L-Sets
[[abstract]]In this paper, the concepts of SP1-connectedness and SP2-connectedness
of L-sets in L-topological spaces are introduced by means of strongly
preclosed L-sets. SP1-connectedness and SP2-connectedness preserve
some fundamental properties of connectedness in general topology. Especially,
the famous K. Fan’s Theorem can be generalized to L-set theory

Emmett L. Bennett, Jr. Offprint Collection
The scholarly library of Emmett L. Bennett, Jr. compiled in the course of his Editorship of the journal Nestor (founded in 1957). The collection includes scholarly publications (offprints) and manuscripts sent by prospective authors to Dr. Bennett. Includes a Finding Aid (PDF and Word) and Catalog (an Excel document for each of two record groups: offprints collected up to 1995, and offprints collected from 1995-2011). Both the Finding Aid and Catalog are provided to facilitate researchers' searches for offprints by author, title, journal, year, and subject.Classic

Real-time oxygen sensing as a powerful tool to investigate tyrosinase kinetics allows revising mechanism and activity of inhibition by glabridin
A new method for studying tyrosinase kinetics and inhibition by oxygen sensing is described and matched to the conventional spectrophotometric approach. The stoichiometric ratio of O2 uptake to dopachrome formation was 1.5 ± 0.2 for substrate L-tyrosine and 1.0 ± 0.1 for L-DOPA. With both methods, we reinvestigated mushroom tyrosinase inhibition by glabridin from Glycyrrhiza glabra. The two methods agreed showing mixed-type inhibition for monophenolase and diphenolase activities, at variance with previous literature. Average KI (KSI) values for glabridin were 13.6 ± 3.5 (281 ± 89) nM and 57 ± 8 (1312 ± 550) nM, for monophenolase and diphenolase inhibition, respectively, with IC50 of 80 ± 8 nM and 294 ± 25 nM, respectively, at 1 mM substrate. For reference kojic acid KI (KSI) were 10.9 ± 8 (217 ± 55) μM and 9.9 ± 1.4 (21.0 ± 5.2) μM, for monophenolase and diphenolase, respectively, with respective IC50 of 33 ± 8 μM and 17 ± 3 μM. Glabridin's activity is among the highest in nature, being about three orders of magnitude higher than previously reported
A Turbo-Detection Aided Serially Concatenated MPEG-4/TCM Videophone Transceiver
A Turbo-detection aided serially concatenated inner Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) scheme is combined with four different outer codes, namely with a Reversible Variable Length Code (RVLC), a Non-Systematic Convolutional (NSC) code a Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) code or a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code. These four outer constituent codes are comparatively studied in the context of an MPEG4 videophone transceiver. These serially concatenated schemes are also compared to a stand-alone LDPC coded MPEG4 videophone system at the same effective overall coding rate. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the serially concatenated TCM-NSC scheme was the most attractive one in terms of coding gain and decoding complexity among all the schemes considered in the context of the MPEG4 videophone transceiver. By contrast, the serially concatenated TCM-RSC scheme was found to attain the highest iteration gain among the schemes considered
Measurements of K S 0 - K L 0 asymmetries in the decays Λ c + → p K L , S 0 , p K L , S 0 π + π − and p K L , S 0 π 0
Abstract Using e + e − annihilation data sets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb −1, collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV, we report the first measurements of the absolute branching fractions B Λ c + → p K L 0 = (1.67 ± 0.06 ± 0.04)%, B Λ c + → p K L 0 π + π − = (1.69 ± 0.10 ± 0.05)%, and B Λ c + → p K L 0 π 0 = (2.02 ± 0.13 ± 0.05)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Combining with the known branching fractions of Λ c + → p K S 0 , Λ c + → p K S 0 π + π − , and Λ c + → p K S 0 π 0 , we present the first measurements of the K S 0 - K L 0 asymmetries R Λ c + K S , L 0 X = B Λ c + → K S 0 X − B Λ c + → K L 0 X B Λ c + → K S 0 X + B Λ c + → K L 0 X in charmed baryon decays: R Λ c + p K S , L 0 = − 0.025 ± 0.031 , R Λ c + p K S , L 0 π + π − = − 0.027 ± 0.048 and R Λ c + p K S , L 0 π 0 = − 0.015 ± 0.046 . No significant asymmetries with statistical significance are observed
Square Dancing with the Stars to Enhance Dynamic Hirschman Linkages?
In this Presidential Address, the author takes the reader on a reconnaissance of his life and time as a regional scientist. He points out scenery he found scintillating along the way, hoping that some may pick up the banner and chew on a few of the ideas for a while. He suggests a revisit to Albert O. Hirschman’s notion of key sectors and more empirical analysis related to Marcus Berliant’s and Masahisa Fujita’s notion of knowledge creation and transfer.Presidential Address, San Antonio, Texas, March 29, 2014 (53rd Meetings of the Southern Regional Science Association
Reliability Ratio Based Weighted Bit-Flipping Decoding for LDPC Codes
In this contribution, a novel reliability-ratio based weighted bit-flipping(RRWBF) algorithm is proposed for decoding Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes. The RRWBF algorithm proposed is benchmarked against the conventional weighted bit-flipping (WBF) algorithm [1] and the improved weighted bit-flipping (IWBF) algorithm [2]. More than 1 and 2 dB coding gain was achieved at an BER of 10-5 while invoking the RRWBF algorithm in comparison to the two benchmarking schemes, when communicating over an AWGN and an uncorrelated Rayleigh channel, respectively. Furthermore, the decoding complexity of the proposed RRWBF algorithm is maintained at the same level as that of the conventional WBF algorithm
