    Preservation of wood structure using stabilized alkaline bleaching agents: a novel and mild approach to enhance whitening for lignin-rich wood template

    Preservation and enhancement of wood properties have become increasingly important due to the growing demand for sustainable materials in the construction and manufacturing industries. This study focuses on bleaching processes as an alternative to conventional delignification, aiming to retain a significant amount of lignin while achieving the desired whiteness of the wood template. In particular, stabilized alkaline hydrogen peroxide is investigated as a bleaching agent under mild conditions. The treatment preserves more than 90% of the native mass in both balsa and birch, ensuring that most of the wood’s structural components are maintained. This results in a high wood volume fraction, corresponding to reduced porosity and a structure closely resembling that of unbleached wood. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) semi-quantitative analysis further confirms that the relative lignin content is retained, ranging between 70 and 80% depending on the species. Unlike conventional approaches that often degrade the wood structure and require long treatment times at high temperatures, the proposed process is performed at room temperature under mild conditions and completed in less than 2–4 h, thus reducing energy demand and avoiding harmful byproducts. Overall, this work provides a bleaching strategy that combines efficiency, structural integrity, and sustainability, offering bleached wood templates suitable for further characterization and advanced applications

    Neuron-glia crosstalk revealed in reverberating networks by simultaneous extracellular recording of spikes and astrocytes' glutamate transporter and K+ currents

    Astrocytes reuptake synaptically released glutamate with electrogenic transporters (GluT), and buffer the spike-dependent extracellular K(+) ([K(+)]o) excess with background K(+) channels. We studied neuronal spikes and the slower astrocytic signals on reverberating neocortical cultures and organotypic slices from mouse brains. Spike trains and glial responses were simultaneously captured from individual sites of multi-electrode arrays (MEA), by splitting the recorded traces into appropriate filters, and reconstructing the original signal by deconvolution. GluT currents were identified by using DL-threo-beta-benzyloxyaspartate (TBOA). K(+) currents were blocked by 30 μM Ba(2+), suggesting a major contribution of inwardly rectifying K(+) currents (Kir) Both types of current were tightly correlated with the spike rate, and their astrocytic origin was tested in primary cultures by blocking glial proliferation with cytosine β-d-arabinofuranoside (AraC). The spike-related, time-locked inward and outward K(+) currents in different regions of the astrocyte syncytium were consistent with the assumptions of the spatial K(+) buffering model. In organotypic slices from ventral tegmental area (VTA) and prefrontal cortex (PFC), the GluT current amplitudes exceeded those observed in primary cultures by several orders of magnitude, which allowed to directly measure transporter currents with a single electrode. Simultaneously measuring cell signals displaying widely different amplitudes and kinetics will help clarify the neuron-glia interplay, and make it possible to follow the cross-talk between different cell types in excitable as well as non-excitable tissue

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Tracking the Mandorla di Avola Almond Variety by Means of ICP Analysis

    The Mandorla di Avola is recognized all over the world as one of the best almond varieties. It is cultivated in a small area inside the provinces of Siracusa and Ragusa (Sicily, southern Italy). It is used in traditional Sicilian cuisine for both salty and sweet foods and of course in artisan pastry, apart from being consumed as a fruit. Due to its extraordinary organoleptic and beneficial features, the Mandorla di Avola is frequently counterfeit with almond varieties of lower quality coming from other countries. While its nutraceutical features have been studied, the possibility of authenticating it with respect to other varieties has not been explored. In this work, we used microelements determined with ICP-OES and ICP-MS as chemical descriptors to distinguish samples of Mandorla di Avola almonds from almonds coming from California and Spain, which are usually employed as substitutes in pastry. Among the different elements determined, Mn and P were found to be the best descriptors for authentication

    From Natural Woods to High Density Materials: An Ecofriendly Approach

    Recently, different methods have been proposed to develop wood materials, termed “densified woods”, with density increment and improvement in mechanical proprieties. Almost all the proposed methods involve the use of reducing agents and strong bases. In this work, a new method has been developed involving the use of less polluting agents. The formation of densified woods is divided into two steps: delignification involves the removal of lignin, hemicelluloses, and shorter chains of cellulose, whereas densification involves the plastering of the delignified woods. The obtained materials showed a density increase of two to four times. The obtained densified woods were characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermogravimetric techniques and mechanical tests. The characterizations aimed at determining the variations of chemical and structural compositions of the samples after delignification and densification processes, showing, respectively, a decrease in lignin and a significant increase in the density and force necessary to bring the materials to yield. The final density of wood was two to three times higher and the force necessary to reach the yield point reached more than three times the initial one for some of the studied samples. These characterizations showed how different woods, with different properties, reach comparable densities and final mechanical properties after delignification and densification process. The increased mechanical properties of the materials allow their application in place of other composite woody materials

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
