A Summary Table. Method and Research Tools in British Anthropology and British Social Surveys in the period 1870s-1910s.

    No full text
The paper presents a synthetic comparison of the method and research tools between Anthropology, specifically Notes & Queries, (Guido Frison) and Social Surveys (Booth, Rowntree, Bowley)(Roberta Cipollini) in the Victorian and Edwardian Ages (1870s-1910s). The aim is to describe similarity and difference in the fact-gathering and data analysis, in the context of positivist view of the scientific empirical knowledge

A Quantitative Content Analysis: Technology and Material Culture in the six Editions of Notes and Queries on Anthropology and the Manuel d'ethnographie. Metodological Note

    No full text
The first aim of the present work is to make a longitudinal analysis devoted to inquiry the changes of the concept of technology and material culture, as they were actually treated in the six editions of Notes and Queries on Anthropology (hence after N&Q), which were printed from 1874 to 1951. Secondly, we will compare the six editions of N&Q with the section devoted to technologie (technology) of Mauss’ Manuel d’Ethnographie (1947, hence after MdE). We define our corpus with the following procedure: we started by comparing the contents of the section material culture of the fifth edition of N&Q (1929) with the section technologie of the MdE. Both sections were already structured in topics (or headings), and we found a good correspondence between them. This permitted us to determine a given number of topics (for instance agriculture, weaving etc.) which together represent the initial material of our corpus. Successively, we compared each topic of this initial material with the former and successive editions of N&Q, looking for substantial affinity, and we finally determined all the headings which form our corpus, being each heading our macro-textual unit ( or context unit in Krippendorff’s terminology, see Krippendorff, 2012). The present work is an example of that large sociological tradition for which content analysis is considered a quantitative approach to systematic, replicable set of procedures for compressing many words of text into fewer content categories on the base of a set of established and explicit rules of coding (Berelson, 1952; Neuendorf, 2002; Krippendorff, 2012). In opposition to many quantitative approaches, however, the present work does not sample segments of the corpus and does not address key words, because its micro-unit of analysis is the sentence and its macro-unit is composed of all the sentences of a given topic. Each heading of our corpus is subjected to a specific kind of quantitative content analysis which analyses, the structural characters of the sentences (for example, their progressive number, the number of words, type of sentence, type of genetic or syntactic similarity, type of answer expected, etc.). The main goal of our research is to evaluate the rhetoric of each heading of N&Q, their trends and changes from the first until the sixth edition, and finally to compare each heading of N&Q with the corresponding topic of the MdE. The hypothesis is that the changes occurred in the rhetoric structure of the six editions of N&Q could be representative of the conceptual, methodological, and theoretical changes of their authors. The present quantitative content analysis is of descriptive-explorative type: it aims a deeper understanding of the changes occurred in the six editions of N&Q, as far as technology and material culture are concerned. Unfortunately the current literature on N&Q remained on a qualitative foot and was not concerned with the topic of technology and material culture (see Stocking 2001, chapter 9, p164-206; Urry 1972; Coote 1987; Petch 2007). Therefore, the magnitude of the changes introduced in technology/material culture between the third and fourth edition have been evaluated at a general level only. Other changes, which occurred in the first three editions or between the fourth and fifth editions were not investigated. We sustain that a correct evaluation of the degrees of continuity or discontinuity is to be made firstly at the level of the single heading. For the workshop we present the first results which analyse only about ten headings out of thirty 32 topics, each of which will include both the French and the British texts

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
