Beyond implementation. social workers' political action in Italy and Spain in Times of crisis

    No full text
Social practitioners that implement public policies in the front-line of services can be considered as ultimate policy-makers (Lipsky 1980, Brodkin 2003). However, professional documents and literature legitimate social workers' political action beyond implementation. On the basis of the international debate on «policy practice» (Gal and Weiss-Gal 2013) and the comparative analysis of the activities of the social work professional organizations in Italy and Spain between 2009 and 2015 - the worst years of recession and austerity - the article sheds light on the forms, opportunities and problems of social workers' political action, as well as on the constraints coming from structural factors. Our results show that the political action of the social work professional organizations in Italy and Spain in times of crisis has grown and developed in different ways, largely path-dependent

Social justice, first? The policy action of South European social workers’ professional organisations in the shadow of austerity: Prima la giustizia sociale? L’azione politica delle organizzazioni professionali del lavoro sociale in Sud-Europa in tempi di austerità

Political responsibility is firmly rooted in social professions, but comparative studies showed that the policy engagement of social workers tends to be low. It appears that something might have changed in the critical juncture Southern Europe has been experiencing in the last 10 years. Economic recession and austerity politics have had particularly significant effects on social and human rights, leading social workers to radical and dramatic responsibilities to act for social justice, thus providing a research test case. The evolutions of social workers’ policy practice in the shadow of austerity are addressed in three steps. First, the importance and pitfalls of collective policy practice and the role of social workers’ professional organisations (SWPOs) are discussed. Second, various hypotheses about the evolution of policy practice under the pressures of recession and austerity are outlined. Third, the situated action of SWPOs in Italy and Spain in such times is analysed. Results develop the debate on social workers’ policy practice and contributes to (a) better defining the relevance of SWPOs for individual policy practice; and (b) identifying different, but intertwined, approaches of SWPOs policy action in Southern Europe, i.e. ‘social justice, first’ and ‘profession, first’

ll potenziale di applicabilità delle Unità Stratigrafiche a Limiti Inconformi nella cartografia geologica del Quaternario: l’esempio della fascia costiera compresa fra Livorno e Piombino (Toscana, Italia)

The UBSU and their potential of applicability in the geological mapping of Quaternary deposits: the example of Tuscany coastal-plan included between Livorno and Piombino (Tuscany, Italy). The Unconformity-Bounded Stratigraphic Units have been suggested as base-units in the geological mapping of Quaternary deposits, for the new Geological Map of Italy, 1:50.000 scale (CARG project). Several difficulties in the subdivision of the Quaternary sedimentary successions, strictly according to ISCC definition of UBSU, have been encountered and, in many cases, this method was extended to less restricted parameters. In this study is exposed the example of the geological mapping of the Tuscany coastal-plain (1:10.000 scale) comprised between Livorno and Piombino and is discussed the applicability of Unconformity-Limited Stratigraphic Units in the subdivision of the Pleistocenic stratigraphic succession. The characteristics of sedimentary successions and the outcrops features brought us to prefer the Allostratigraphic Units (UA) as base-units. The UA, although save a genetic meaning, are characterized by less restrictive constrains and thus represent, in this case, a more operative tool

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Analisi di facies dei depositi terrigeni del Cretaceo superiore del versante sud della "Sierra de Guadarrama" (Madrid, Spagna centrale): dati preliminari

This study concerns the facies analysis and the reconstruction of depositional environments of the basal, terrigenous portion of the Upper Cretaceous sedimentary succession, located in the southern margin of the «Sierra the Guadarrama» Mountains (North of Madrid, central Spain), which is a portion of the Spanish central Chain called «Sistema Central». The terrigenous deposits studied, about 90 m tick, are constitued by three formations: the «Arenas the Utrillas», the «Arenas y arcillas de Castro de Fuentidueña» and the «Arenas y arcillas de Segovia» wich age is enclosed between Cenomanian and Early-Middle Coniacian. The «Arenas de Utrillas» (Cenomanian), mainly constituted by sandstones and conglomerates, are related to a braided bedload coarse sand river. Paleocurrent analysis evidences at least, within the “Arenas de Utrillas” formation, the presence of three fluvial systems flowing about side by side. The «Arenas y arcillas de Castro de Fuentidueña» (Early Turonian-Early Coniacian) record a transgressive-regressive sedimentary cycle first characterized by clay and sandstone deposited in a coastal environment dominated by tidal processes. A phase of maximum flooding is evidenced by the development of autochtonous glaucony-rich deposits while the transition to tidal deposits represents the final regressive phase. The «Arenas y arcillas de Segovia» (Early-Middle Coniacian), which lie disconformably above The «Arenas y arcillas de Castro de Fuentidueña», represented the beginning of another sedimentary cycle with a development of another marine transgression. The sedimentary features observed match with coastal tide-dominated depositional environment except for a small area, that was not flooded by marine waters, and where are preserved the laterally equivalent deposits in fluvial facies

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
