Monolithic whispering-gallery mode resonators with vertically coupled integrated bus waveguides
Abstract—We report on the realization of a silicon-based mi-croresonator/waveguide coupled system, fully integrated on a sil-icon chip. The device uses a vertical coupling scheme of the res-onator and a buried strip waveguide. We demonstrate that its high optical quality follows from the accurate planarization of the wave-guide topography, which is achieved by multiple depositions-and-reflows of a borophosphosilicate glass over strip waveguides. More importantly, we demonstrate wafer-scale mass fabrication of free-standing planar resonators suspended in air and coupled to inte-grated bus waveguides, as well as controlled selective excitation of different mode families of the resonator. This opens the door for the realization of stable all-integrated complex resonator systems for optomechanical and metrological applications, with the poten-tial to substitute today’s intensive use of complicated fiber-taper coupling schemes. NanoSi low loss horizontal slot waveguides coupled to high Q ring resonators
Si-based horizontal slot waveguides coupled to ring resonators have been fabricated and characterised. The central layer of the slot has been filled by Silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc) obtained by deposition of silicon rich silicon oxide and then thermal annealing. A comparison of various deposition and annealing parameters to form the Si-nc is performed. Propagation losses as low as 3 dB/cm and ring resonator quality factor of 30,000 have been achieved at 1550 nm
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Photoluminescence of hydrophilic silicon nanocrystals in aqueous solutions
Stable aqueous solutions of undecylenic-acid-grafted silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc) were prepared. The time evolution of the photoluminescence properties of these hydrophilic silicon nanocrystals has been followed on different timescales (hours and days). On a short timescale (hours), Si-nc tend to agglomerate while the PL lineshape and intensity are stable. Agglomeration can be reduced by using suitable surfactants. On a long timescale (days), oxidation of Si-nc occurs even in the presence of surfactants. These two observations render Si-nc very useful as a labeling agent for biosensing

Ultra-high-Q thin-silicon nitride strip-loaded ring resonators
We report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of thin Si3N4 ultra-high-quality (UHQ) factor ring resonators monolithically integrated on a silicon chip. The devices are based on a strip-loaded configuration and operate at both near-infrared (NIR) and third-telecom wavelengths. This approach allows us to use a guiding Si3N4 core that is one order of magnitude thinner than what has been reported
in the past for obtaining similar device performances. Our strip-loaded devices benefit from the absence of physically etched lateral boundaries to show minute light scattering and, therefore, reducing significantly
scattering-related losses. Consequently, UHQs of 3.7 × 10^6 in the NIR and high-quality factors of up to 9 × 10^5 in the C-band were measured for the guiding material thickness of 80 nm and 115 nm, respectively. These first results are subject to further improvements that may allow employing strip-loaded resonators in nonlinear frequency conversion or quantum computing schemes within the desired spectral range provided by the material transparency
