«Povero Rock Hudson».
The essay delves into the cultural debate surrounding the rise of the Northern League in the early 1990s, at a time when the party appropriated not only economic and legal motives, but also cultural, historical and religious elements capable of establishing it as the defender of a Northern identity. However, the chapter emphasises the lack of a cultural systematisation, which prevents the identification of a real culture of the North with the values and cultural substrate propagandized by the party led by Umberto Bossi.
The essay examines Roy Rosenzweig’s contribution to the debate on public history from the 1980s to the early 2000s, a time in which academia and educational institutions began to get acquainted with opportunities and risks of digital data. Rosenzweig, an American historian with a democratic and radical background, was among the first to recognize the advantages of digital data management in the field of archiving and learning, and as far as historical research training is concerned thanks to the remote access to the sources. However, the article also discusses the limits of digital data, which Rosenzweig himself highlighted at an early stage, such as the possible lack of contextualization and of quality control of online historical sources, and copyright restrictions. Rosenzweig suggested assessing both costs and benefits of the new technologies and the outcomes from the point of view of education and historical research, recommending to historians a commitment to a widespread democratization of knowledge and to the full accessibility to primary and secondary sources
book series
Between the 1960s and the 1970s, Marxism reached its maximum success in Italy, but that phase also corresponded to the crisis of the Italian Communist Party’s cultural hegemony, challenged by both the attacks coming from the New Left and innovative readings of Marx’s works. Marxist historicism, on which the Italian Communist Party had based its cultural policy after the the Second World War, consequently suffered heavy attacks. This article illuminates one of the responses to historicism’s decline, providing an account of the book series La Scienza Nuova, issued by the publishing house Dedalo in Bari and edited by the communist intellectual Mario Spinella, who was able to remain loyal to his party demonstrating, at the same time, cultural autonomy. Also grounding on archival documents, the article posits that Spinella’s aim was to attract New Left readers by selecting books on topics and by authors that were in fashion in Italy and abroad, but incorporating them into a theoretical framework based on Marxist historicism, in order to preserve the latter in an evolving cultural environment
Developing Middlebrow Culture in Fascist Italy: The Case of Rizzoli’s Illustrated Magazines
Angelo Rizzoli was one of Italy’s leading publishers in the interwar period and beyond, thanks to his business intuition and daring investments in the popular periodicals sector. In the 1920s and 1930s he published a galaxy of illustrated magazines aimed at the urban middle classes, which prove paradigmatic of a new form of Italian weeklies. The article posits that Rizzoli’s rotocalchi, based on entertaining content and photojournalism, were mediators par excellence in three areas. First, in publishing middlebrow fiction. Second, in translating short stories from linguistic and cultural milieus with a deliberate selection of specific literary genres, settings, and character types — a branding that emerges from investigating the weeklies Novella and Lei. Third, in the creation of a platform for interchange between literature, photography, and cinema, mainly in Cinema Illustrazione Presenta. Notwithstanding the obstacles put in their way by the Fascist regime and the censorship system, Rizzoli’s illustrated magazines introduced and spread models of female conduct that did not coincide with those proposed by the Fascists, while adapting them to common Italian cultural values and exploiting them for commercial purposes. As a typical expression of middlebrow culture based on leisure, respectability, and consumption, they repurposed messages from other media and foreign contexts, facilitating the penetration of modern behaviour patterns in Italy
