Atmospheric modelling of Uranus and Neptune : circulation and thermal structure
Flyby of Uranus and Neptune by Voyager 2 in 1986 and 1989 have shown an intense zonal circulation and an unexpected meteorological activity. Characterized by a prograde jet at mid-latitude in each hemisphere and a retrograde jet centered on the equator, the zonal structure of the wind is similar on these two planets despite a very different seasonal radiative forcing. Understanding atmospheric circulation in gas and ice giant planets, with comparative planetology aspects that could be relevant to the exoplanet community is one of the major current challenges in physics of planetary atmospheres. The radio-occultations and IRIS experiment from Voyager 2 flyby provided also important information about the thermal structure of Uranus and Neptune. Despite a low irradiance, the stratosphere is warmer than expected. The previous models failed to reproduce the observed temperature with realistic heating sources. The seasonal variability of the thermal structure remains to be questionable for Uranus. To evaluate the role of several heat sources and characterised the seasonal variations, we use the radiative-convective model developed by the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD), previously used for the atmospheres of gas giant planets. We find that aerosols particles can reconcile the simulated temperature profile and the Voyager 2 temperature profile. The heating produced by the hazes is sufficient to reduce the previous gap of 50 K to 5 K at 0.1 hPa. By adding a thermospheric conduction, the conduction allows to keep closer at the lowest levels of our model the temperature profile with the observations. In the case of Neptune, all hypothesis tested could not warm stratosphere. The meridional temperature reproduced on Uranus and Neptune is inconsistent with the thermal structure at the tropopause retrieved by IRIS experiment and by ground-based observatories for the stratosphere. In our simulations, a seasonal variation is seen above the tropopause where the maximum zonal contrast is shifted by 90° following the summer solstice on Uranus and on Neptune, it occurs at 50° in solar longitude following the solstices. To reproduce the zonal jets as well as the strong meteorological activity on Uranus and Neptune, 1° resolution numerical simulations has been performed with a Global Climate Model (GCM) named DYNAMICO Ice Giants Planetary Climate Model. According to our GCM, the zonal wind has a complex structure in altitude on Uranus and Neptune. The zonal-mean zonal wind speed averaged over the whole year show a retrograde jet centered near the equateur and a prograde jet at mid-latitudes in each hemisphere on both planets. Significant wave activity was identified in our simulations. Using the transformed eulerian mean formalism, we were able to determine that small-scale eddies and residual circulation contribute to the acceleration of prograde jets at mid-latitudes. At the same time, we identified an equatorial oscillation on Uranus with a period of one year on average. We identify the local extrema observed on this profile as being the temperature anomalies caused by this oscillation. The meridional thermal structure is very different from that obtained with the radiative-convective model. Seasonal variations are greatly attenuated by atmospheric dynamics. The meridional and temporal variations observed on Neptune are qualitatively similar to those simulated by our model. A meridional circulation has been identified using the transformed and classical Eulerian mean formalism. In the classical case, a circulation very similar to that deduced from the observations has been reproduced on Uranus
Modelling the atmospheric dynamics of Saturn's stratosphere
Saturn's atmosphere reveals alternating band jets, intense convection episodes, a stratospheric equatorial temperature oscillation as well as thermal and chemical variations suggesting large-scale meridional transport. Nevertheless, its global dynamics remain poorly understood as few multi-scale interaction studies address the emergence of such phenomena. In this thesis, a geophysical fluid mechanics perspective is used to interpret astrophysical observations using a global climate model. The first simulations reproduce alternating band jets in the troposphere respecting a zonostrophic regime as well as an equatorial oscillation of temperature and wind resulting from the interaction between planetary scale waves and the mean flow. These simulations fail to stabilise the periodicity of the oscillation and are unfavourable to eastward forcing. With increasing vertical resolution, the eastward phase has strengthened and the periodicity has stabilised due to a seasonal inter-hemispheric circulation that is inter-connected with the phase change of the oscillation. The downward branch of this circulation is located under the shadow of the rings and allows for heat accumulation in the tropics, reminiscent of observations. The implementation of a stochastic parameterisation of non-orographic gravity waves in the model indicates that their role in forcing Saturn's modelled equatorial oscillation appears to be less than the role of the seasonal cycle through the inter-hemispheric circulation
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Modelling of the Jupiter's atmospheric dynamics
The extremely dynamic atmosphere of Jupiter is characterised by alternated jets, a strong convective activity and an equatorial super-rotation whose formation mechanisms are poorly understood. In this thesis, we adopt a numerical modelling approach of the jovian weather layer to investigate those formation mechanisms. We use the global climate model DYNAMICO-giant which allows for simulating the atmospheric flow at high resolution with a realistic radiative transfer. In order to improve our model by way of more realistic forcings of the flow, we adapted the "thermal plume model", a terrestrial parametrization of the moist convection, to Jupiter's atmosphere. Thus our simulations recreate spontaneously some of the most essential features of the jovian atmosphere such as alternated jets, the zonostrophic regime of the flow and an inverse cascade of energy which shows jets forcing by the mesoscale turbulence. On the other hand, an equatorial superrotation is not systematically reproduced and seems to require a sufficiently high water atmospheric abundance. Optimal results are obtained for a jovian atmospheric abundance of water close to the one which was measured by the Juno mission
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The goal of the thesis is to measure the temperature and composition fields in Saturn's stratosphere. In order to do so, we analyze spectra of the thermal emission of the planet acquired in limb geometry by CIRS, an infrared spectrometer aboard the Cassini spacecraft. These spectral signatures are analyzed using a radiative transfer model coupled to a retrieval algorithm in order to measure vertical profiles of the temperature and of the abundance of atmospheric gases. We have thus obtained the first maps, from 70N to 80 S, and on several scale heights, of the temperature and abundance of five hydrocarbons. The temperature map we obtain is used to quantify the thermal response of the atmosphere to seasonal variations in isolation. We compare the gradients we measure to the radiative seasonal model of Greathouse et al. [2008]. We also report the discovery of an equatorial oscillation in temperature and zonal wind proles in the stratosphere of Saturn, similar to the Earth's quasi-biennial oscillation, and we present its temporal evolution between 2005 and 2010. This analysis of the hydrocarbon's distributions and their comparaison to a seasonal photochemical model [Moses and Greathouse, 2005] shows signs of meridional transport in the lower stratosphere, from the equator to the poles, and vertical transport in the upper stratosphere. Finally, we present a detailed analysis of the radiative exhanges in the stratosphere using the Net Exhange Rates formulation.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
