    [EN] The suid from Grytsiv (= Gritsev) in Ukraine belongs to the genus Propotamochoerus. This genus was not yet known from the Miocene of eastern Europe. The Grytsiv suid is described and its significance is discussed within the palaeobiogeographical and stratigraphical framework of the genus Propotamochoerus. Grytsiv is geographically situated between three areas with different species of the genus: W Europe (P. palaeochoerus), China (P. hyotherioides) and the Indian Subcontinent (P. hysudricus). In Europe, P. palaeochoerus is replaced at the MN 9-10 boundary or early in MN 10 by a different species of Propotamochoerus with affinities with P. hyotherioides or P. hysudricus. Conohyus is well known in Spain from late MN5, or zone E, MN7+8, or zone G and MN9. The material from Alhambra folls the gap in the Iberian record. The Iberian record shows that Cononhyus evolution occurred in a larger area that extends from Western Europe to Anatolia.     Unique short-faced miocene seal discovered in grytsiv (Ukraine)

    Numerous Miocene terrestrial mammal fossils have been discovered at the Grytsiv locality of Ukraine, but this is the first record of a fossil marine mammal at this site. Morphological analysis of the rostral portion of this middle-late Miocene (12.3–11.8 Ma) partial skull suggests that it belongs to the subfamily Phocinae. The small size and cranial morphology of this partial skull is compared with recent and fossil representatives of the extant subfamily Phocinae and the extinct subfamily Devinophocinae. Extinct and modern representatives of the extant subfamilies Cystophorinae and Monachinae were not incorporated in this study due to their extremely large size in comparison to this new find. This newly described skull belonged to a small-sized seal (likely similar in size to the modern sea otter based on the width of the rostrum) with an extremely short rostrum and several other diagnostic characters that differ from all other fossil and extant phocines. Due to the lack of preservation and fragility of fossil seal skulls, less than 20 have been described so far. This new skull is yet another example of an ancestral seal, supporting the suggestion that modern seals have become larger over their evolutionary history. Overall, any cranial information on fossil true seals is extremely important since it allows resolving contentious phylogenetic relationships between extinct and extant representatives of this group

    Phase relations and crystal structure of τ6-Ti2(Ti0.16Ni0.43Al0.41)3

    Ti2(Ti0.16Ni0.43Al0.41) 3 is a novel compound (labeled as τ6) in the Ti-rich region of the Ti-Ni-Al system in a limited temperature range 870 < T < 980 °C. The structure of τ6-Ti2(Ti,Ni,Al)3 was solved from a combined analysis of X-ray single crystal and neutron powder diffracton data (space group C2/m, a = 1.85383(7) nm, b = 0.49970(2) nm, c = 0.81511(3) nm, and β = 99.597(3)°). τ6-Ti 2(Ti,Ni,Al)3 as a variant of the V2(Co 0.57Si0.43)3-type is a combination of slabs of the MgZn2-Laves type and slabs of the Zr4Al 3-type forming a tetrahedrally close-packed Frank-Kasper structure with pentagon-triangle main layers. Titanium atoms occupy the vanadium sites, but Ti/Ni/Al atoms randomly share the (Co/Si) sites of V2(Co 0.57Si0.43)3. Although τ6 shows a random replacement on 6 of the 11 atom sites, it has no significant homogeneity range (∼1 at. %). The composition of τ6 changes slightly with temperature. DSC/DTA runs (1 K/min) were not sufficient to define proper reaction temperatures due to slow reaction kinetics. Therefore, phase equilibria related to τ6 were derived from X-ray powder diffraction in combination with EPMA on alloys, which were annealed at carefully set temperatures and quenched. τ6 forms from a peritectoid reaction η-(Ti,Al)2Ni + τ3 + α2 ↔ τ6 at 980 °C and decomposes in a eutectoid reaction τ6 ↔ η + τ4 + α2 at 870 °C. Both reactions involve the η-(Ti,Al)2Ni phase, for which the atom distribution was derived from X-ray single crystal intensity data, revealing Ti/Al randomly sharing the 48f- and 16c-positions in space group Fd3̄m (Ti2Ni-type, a = 1.12543(3) nm). There was no residual electron density at the octahedral centers of the crystal structure ruling out impurity stabilization. Phase equilibria involving the τ6 phase have been established for various temperatures (T = 865, 900, 925, 950, 975 °C, and subsolidus). The reaction isotherms concerning the τ6 phase have been established and are summarized in a Schultz-Scheil diagram

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
