Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Spin-electric coupling in quantum dots and molecular magnets
In this thesis we study several aspects related to the dynamics of
electrons and holes in quantum dots, as well as dynamics of electron
spins in molecular magnets.
Magnetic materials and spin systems are usually probed and controlled
by magnetic fields. The techniques of spin manipulation via magnetic
fields were developed in the ESR and NMR studies. These techniques
allow for detailed study and manipulation of {\it large} collection of
spins.
Reducing the size of a device improves its properties. In case of a
prototypical magnetic device, a memory element, the smaller devices
will have shorter access times and larger capacity per unit volume,
and a smaller power absorption. Another important reason to study even
smaller devices is that a plethora of intriguing quantum effects
become manifest only when the size of a device is small
enough. Typically, the quantum effects start to be important at the
nanometer scale. At these scale, the control via magnetic fields of
individual devices becomes problematic.
Obtaining electric fields instead, that can be locally controlled and
fast switched, is a routine nowadays. The ability to move around
molecules with STM tips is just one example of for control of quantum
systems at the nanoscale with electric fields. The missing ingredient
is a mechanism that would make spins couple to electric fields. In this work I investigated precisely this issue, namely the coupling
of electric fields, either classical or quantum, to different spin
systems, like spins in quantum dots or molecular magnets.
The thesis is divided in four parts. In the first part, we investigate a new type
of spin-spin interaction, which arises due to the presence of both
Coulomb repulsion between two electrons localized in quantum dots,
and the spin-orbit interaction in the host material (GaAs). We show
that this type of coupling is long-range and resembles the interaction
of two electric dipoles that depend on spin. For this interaction to
arise direct coupling between electrons is not necessary (no tunneling
assumed). In the second part we investigate the interaction between spins
localized in quantum dots mediated by the electromagnetic modes of a
one dimensional microwave cavity and spin-orbit interaction. We show
that this interaction can be strong and long range ( mm), and
can be controlled (switched on and off) either magnetically or
electrically. The third part is devoted to hole-spin dynamics in quantum dots. We analyze the weak magnetic field regime of the
relaxation of a heavy-hole spin localized in a quantum dot. Driven by
recent experiments, we show that two-phonon processes give a good
explanation for the saturation of the relaxation time at intermediate
temperatures. In the fourth part we show, by several methods, that spin
transitions in (some) molecular magnets can be induced by electric
fields. We identify a spin-electric coupling caused by an interplay
between spin exchange, spin-orbit interaction, and the chirality of
the underlying spin texture of the molecular magnet. This coupling
allows for the electric control of the spin (qubit) states, e.g. by
using an STM tip or a microwave cavity. We propose an experimental
test for identifying molecular magnets exhibiting spin-electric
effects

On the unified analysis of three types of relative clause construction in Japanese, and on the “salient reading” of the internally headed type. A reply to Erlewine & Gould (2016)
In this reply, we argue against two proposals made by Erlewine & Gould (2016), and in favor of the following two theses:[i] Japanese internally headed relative constructions disallow an interpretation that is crucially based on contextual salience, and allow only an interpretation that reflects the content of their (explicit or implicit) internal head(s).[ii] None of Erlewine & Gould’s attempts to provide independent support for their unified analysis of internally headed, externally headed and doubly headed relative constructions of Japanese is tenable. Therefore, these writers failed to provide convincing justification for abandoning the approach developed by Grosu & Landman (2012) and Landman (2016) with respect to the analysis of the internally headed relatives of Japanese, an approach which moreover yielded explicit accounts of two types of data for which Erlewine & Gould have no obvious analysis.</jats:p

Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. Modeling and Simulation of Cardiac Tissue using Hybrid I/O Automata
AbstractWe propose a new biological framework based on the Lynch et al. theory of Hybrid I/O Automata (HIOAs) for modeling and simulating excitable tissue. Within this framework, we view an excitable tissue as a composition of two main kinds of component: a diffusion medium and a collection of cells, both modeled as an HIOA. This approach yields a notion of decomposition that allows us to describe a tissue as the parallel composition of several interacting tissues, a property that could be exploited to parallelize, and hence improve, the efficiency of the simulation process. We also demonstrate the feasibility of our HIOA-based framework to capture and mimic different kinds of wave-propagation behavior in 2D isotropic cardiac tissue, including normal wave propagation along the tissue; the creation of spiral waves; the break-up of spiral waves into more complex patterns such as fibrillation; and the recovery of the tissue to the rest via electrical defibrillation
Author in Essay by I. A. Goncharov “Pepiniere”
Features of the embodiment of the author’s position in the essay by I. A. Goncharov “Pepiniere” are considered. The relevance of the study is due to the poorly studied poetics of this work. A review of the scientific literature on relevant topics is performed. Methodological and theoretical definitions are given. The scientific novelty of the article is in the fact that for the first time attention is paid to artistic techniques that allow to identify the author's position in the specified literary text. The author of the article grounds her opinion from the fact that, despite the dominance of the subjective point of view, other characters’ views stand out in the work. It is concluded in the study that the text of the work represents a biographical author and author-creator. It was established that the position of the author-creator is expressed through the title, epigraphs, which are quotes, as well as through different points of view, including the author-character, the author-narrator, the characters of the work. The author of the article dwells in detail on different ways of expressing the points of view of the author-character and the author-narrator. It is proved that the point of view of the author-character and the author-narrator can intersect, they are interchanged. The author's development of the term comic “point of view” is presented in the article
