In the first twenty years since the Security Council adopted resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security, we witnessed some historic firsts for gender equality. While we must pause to appreciate these firsts, we must recall that we have neither significantly changed the composition of peace tables, nor the impunity enjoyed by those who commit atrocities against women and girls

Activity size distribution of radioactive Be-7 aerosols at different environments in Northern Italy

    No full text
The activity size distributions of the natural radionuclide tracer 7Be were determined in different site places in Northern Italy in order to define any differences due to the different environments. In the frame of this work, three different environments where chosen, in an urban area (University of Milano), in a rural residential area (Ispra) and in Maqugnaga village at 1300 m height in Monte Rosa Mountain. Each sampling at three sampling stations was carried out simultaneously with a sampling at a reference station in an suburban-industrialised area (Segrate). For this case, two compatible aerosol cascade impactors were used. The aerodynamic size distributions were obtained by using two compatible 1-ACFM cascade impactors with efficient cutoff diameters (ECD) of 0.4, 0.7, 1.1, 2.1, 3.3, 4.7, 5.8, and 9 and acetate cellulose filters as collection substrates. The length of each collection period was 1 week. In order to study the influence of the meteorological conditions to the activity size distribution of 7Be aerosols, the three sampling campaigns at different environments were done during each season of the year

PROCEEDINGS OF SIMAI 2020+21: THE XV BIANNUAL CONGRESS OF SIMAI 30 August - 3 September 2021 Parma, Italy

The book collects the abstracts of the bi-annual congress of the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SIMAI) held from August 30 to September 3, 2021 at the University of Parma. The Congress met together about 500 researchers from academia and industry active in the study of mathematical and numerical models as well as in their applications to industrial and real life problems. The aim of this traditional event is to stimulate interdisciplinary research in Applied Mathematics and to foster interactions of the scientific community with industry. The content of this book is made by the contributions of: 6 Plenary Speakers; 63 Minisymposia and some other individual contributions; the "Industrial Session", a special event gathering together academic and industrial representatives to work on mathematical problems encountered in Research & Development areas; "EDU-SIMAI session", the event dedicated to the relationship with Secondary Schools on the subject of applied mathematics teaching

Effects of prey over-undercrowding in predator-prey systems with prey-dependent trophic functions

    No full text
The local dynamics of a two-trophic chain in the presence of both overcrowding and undercrowding effects on prey growth is investigated. The starting point is given by a general predatorprey system, in which the prey growth rate and the trophic interaction function are defined only by some properties determining their shapes; in particular, the prey growth function is assumed to model a strong Allee effect. A stability analysis of the system using the predation efficiency as bifurcation parameter is performed; conditions for the existence and stability of extinction and coexistence equilibrium states are determined, and peculiar features of the dynamics exhibited by the system are presented, with particular attention to limit cycles and bistability situations. Results are compared with those obtained when overcrowding and undercrowding effects are considered separately

Gender-based violence as a challenge to constitutional democracy

    No full text
The article deals with gender-based violence, considering that its increase, during the COVID-19 pandemic, does not represent a novelty. Notwithstanding the flows of legislation in the last decades, both at domestic and international level, this dramatic human rights violation has not been eradicated within the constitutional democracies. The article points out that gender-based violence represents a triple challenge to the founding values of constitutional democracy: a) as violence; b) as an expression of a hierarchical conception of the society; c) and, finally, as an extreme form of silencing and marginalizing the most peaceful component of society, the women. It considers that the difficulties in eradicating gender-based violence are related to the difficulties that constitutional democracies are experiencing in the XX century. Therefore, it concludes that the struggle for women’s rights and against gender-based violence is nowadays more crucial than ever.

    Ft-ir Skeletal Powder Spectra of Ba-beta-aluminas With Compositions BaAl9O14.5, BaAl12O19, and BaAl14O22 and of Ba-ferrite, BaFe12O19

The FT-IR/FT-FIR powder skeletal spectra of beta-aluminas of composition BaAl9O14.5, BaAl12O19, and BaAl14O22 and of a magnetoplumbite-type Ba-ferrite BaFe12O19 are reported and discussed, on the basis of the structural models previously proposed for these solids. These models find good confirmation in such skeletal spectra. Emphasis is focused on the defect structure of these compounds. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc
