Alexander McQueen’s spectacular shows were full of extraordinary moments and people. Author and photographer Robert Fairer will discuss his stunning, high-energy photographs of McQueen’s runway shows. Fairer, who was Vogue's backstage fashion photographer for more than a decade, was an integral part of the whirl of activity behind the scenes. In "Alexander McQueen: Unseen," Fairer's images, which capture both the glamour and the grit, represent a new genre of fashion photography and are a treasure trove of inspiration. Robert Fairer joins writer and consultant John Matheson (of Instagram's @McQueen_Vault) in a talk moderated by MFIT’s senior curator of education Tanya Melendez-Escalante

Inclusiveness, serendipity and complex space : processes that (may) enhance inclusiveness

Some people are better at looking at things from a wider perspective than others – they can think outside the box. Individuals, companies and organizations strive for continuity to provide basic safety. Innovation is crucial to survive in the modern world. Sometimes we need to be quick and exploit new opportunities when we see them.Towards explorative spaceIt can be argued that many potentialities within society are left unused by organising spaces (including incubators) based on modern planning practices. These planning practises regard space as predictable and manageable. By applying modern management principles to spaces, an important function of spaces can be easily overlooked and that is that spaces can be regarded as spaces which provide ‘difference’. This difference in spaces entails for example that space gives an opportunity to experiment with different futures, or perhaps towards inclusiveness. Understood in this context as “the quality of including all sections of society”. Modern planning practices often have the tendency to exclude sections of society. This requires reconsideration when entering a smart world! Dr. Alexander Grit, professor Entrepreneurship in transition from the Alfa-college and Hanze University of Applied sciences Groningen argues that facilitators (organizers) of space are in need of tools which allow them open up space and enhance entrepreneurial mindset. The professorship has developed two concepts which potentially open up space to difference and inclusiveness. The first tool is the training Host at the serendipity table whereby a host trained to facilitate a process of finding the unexpected within a group setting. The second tool is the training becoming a critical friend which provides a framework for asking the right questions and dialog. In his presentation, Alexander will introduce the two concepts in his presentation.<br/

The present quantitative study of predictive design aims to determine the influence of basic psychological needs and some socio-demographic variables on GRIT, in a sample constituted by scholarship students financed by PRONABEC from a private university in Lima. The GRIT Scale and Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale were applied to 865 students, 54.7% were female, the ages fluctuated between 16 and 47 years of age, 74.5% were residents in Lime. Results demonstrated that Basic Psychological Need’s satisfaction has a positive influence on GRIT. At higher GRIT levels, the greater probability of satisfying the NPB and vice versa. On the other hand, there is a negative relationship between the GRIT dimensions (consistency and perseverance) and NPB frustration. In addition, women and first generation students showing higher GRIT levels. The predictive power of the model valued through corrected R square was 0.503. To conclude, this research confirms a high degree of influence of the competence needs satisfaction dimension on the GRIT and the influence of sociodemographic variables in achieving objectives. That could be the object of intervention processes that seek to strengthen the GRIT and the NPB in a sample with similar characteristics.Trabajo de investigació

The Author of the Alexander Romance

This paper, which is based on a portion of the introduction of the author’s edition of Il Romanzo di Alessandro (Mondadori: Fondazione Valla 2007), surveys the generic components of the Alexander Romance in an attempt to arrive at a definition of the work. The argument builds on Merkelbach’s categorisation of elements and uses Fusillo’s insight into the novel as an ‘encyclopaedic genre’ to propose that ‘historical novel’ is not, as Hägg contended, a misnomer for the work. The main components I discuss are: ‘life’; praxeis; chreiai; Cynic elements, including choliambic poetry and utopian perspectives; and the Egyptian aspects of the narrative. A concluding jeu d’esprit offers a characterisation of the putative author, his antecedents and his process of composition.Richard Stoneman was for 25 years editor for classics at Croom Helm and then Routledge. In 1997 he was appointed an Honorary Fellow in the department of classics, University of Exeter. After retiring from publishing in 2006 he has been pursuing his researches on the Alexander legends and teaching a course on the subject at Exeter. His Penguin translation of the Alexander Romance was published in 1991, and a volume of translated Legends of Alexander the Great appeared from Everyman in 1994. Also in 1994 he co-edited Greek Fiction with John Morgan. His edition of the Greek recensions of the Alexander Romance was published (volume I) by the Fondazione Valla in 2007 – volumes II and III will follow over the next few years – and his Alexander the Great: A Life in Legend appeared from Yale University Press in spring 2008. He is the author of a number of other books on Greek history and travel, and is writing a book on oracles

Jumping the Achievement Gap: Grit and Socioeconomic Status in Princeton Students

    No full text
In recent years the personality characteristic grit, defined by Duckworth et al., 2007 as ¿perseverance and the passion for long term goals,¿ has been shown to have a significant positive impact on many kinds of achievement. The present study used a sample of students at Princeton University (N = 178) to examine the connections between grit, achievement, and socioeconomic status in a population of high achievers. The results confirmed those of Duckworth et al., and also partially confirmed my hypothesis, that low-SES students would have higher grit than high- SES students. Specifically, mother¿s educational attainment was a highly significant negative predictor of grit. It was also discovered that optimism and attributional style are positively predictive of grit
