Effects of Benomyl anf Captan on rhizosphere fungi and the growth of Allium cepa.
The effects of soil treatment with Benomyl or Captan on the rhizosphere fungi of Allium cepa were investigated. The mycoflora of the rhizosphere was considerably inhibited by both fungicides. Captan was more inhibiting than Benomyl, but the latter seemed to be more persistent. The fungi isolated from the rhizosphere of control plants, plants treated with Benomyl or with Captan are listed and differences between treatments are discussed. The total number of species isolated from the rhizosphere of control plants was 65, Benomyl 44 and Captan 29. The growth of onions receiving fungicide treatment was greatly reduced: differences in dry weight were 31% (Captan) and 36% (Benomyl) less than control plants
Mutagenicity of pesticides evaluated by means of gene-conversion in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and in Aspergillus nidulans.
Nine pesticides, Afugan, Atrazine, Benomyl, Captan, Daconil, Melthaumittel, Plantvax, Saprol, and Wepsin were tested for the induction of mitotic geneconversion in two different eucaryotic microorganisms, Saccharomyces cerevisae and Aspergillus nidulans. In S cerevisiae the pesticides were also tested after mouse liver microsomal activation; in A nidulans all tests were performed using both resting and germinating conidia. Among the tested pesticides, only Captan revealed a consistent genetic activity, three times greater than that observed with the standard mutagen methylmethansulphonate. This genetic activity of Captan is suppressed after mammalian metabolic conversion. The use of germinating conidia in A nidulans for scoring the induction of mitotic gene-conversion did not give any further information on the activity of the tested pesticides
Effects of soil applications of Benomyl and Captan on the growth of onions and the occurrence of endophytic mycorrhizas and rhizosphere microbes.
When grown for 6 months in the absence of pathogens, repeated soil applications of benomyl or captan significantly and similarly decreased growth of onion seedlings by 22–25% (diameter) and 31–34% (dry weight). The losses were associated with differing effects on soil microbes. Whereas captan had no effect on the occurrence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizas it appreciably decreased populations of rhizosphere fungi. In contrast benomyl inhibited mycorrhiza formation but had a relatively small effect on rhizosphere fungi

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Hidden Complexity in Routine Adult and Pediatric Arrhythmias Interpretation: The Future of Precision Electrocardiology
Classic ECG interpretation is based on identification of waveforms and deductive analysis of the electrical events the waveforms represent. The more in depth the understanding of electrophysiologic cellular interactions, the more precise the interpretation of ECG tracing. Surface ECG has limitations; yet, it is accurate in representing myocytes’ pathologic behaviors. Recent advances have improved understanding of arrhythmias by reconstructing their mechanisms of induction and maintenance and exploring cellular channel dysfunction. Translating this knowledge to ECG analysis will create the link that allows ECG interpretation to reach the level of precision electrocardiology. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
