The Weight of Belonging: Families and Kinship in Italy between Persistence and Transformations Several scholars have referred to the ‘anomaly’ of the Italian family model characterized by the persistence of ‘strong ties’ in the presence of ‘weak choices’. Several scholars have referred to the ‘anomaly’ of the Italian family model characterized by the persistence of ‘strong ties’ in the presence of ‘weak choices’. Italian family is deeply influenced by the logic of kinship belonging, despite transformations in family life. These transformations include decreasing natality and nuptiality, the spread of unmarried couples and births outside of marriage, connected to the loosening of the centrality of marriage. The persistence of the logic of kinship belonging are visible in the residential proximity between parents and adult children and in the strong moral obligations across generations. This essay aims to analyse this ‘anomaly’, reconnecting the current situation to that of the recent past in which various ‘cultures of family and kinship’ characterized the different contexts of the Italian peninsula. Persisting and changing characteristics in the process of family formation are analysed starting from ethnographic research carried out by two scholars: the first is related to the evolution of residential models in a Tuscan province (Siena), and the second focuses on procreative choices in a Sardinian urban context (Cagliari) characterized by low birth rate. Innovative two-stage anaerobic process for effective codigestion of cheese whey and cattle manure

The valorisation of agroindustrial waste through anaerobic digestion represents a significant opportunity for refuse treatment and renewable energy production. This study aimed to improve the codigestion of cheese whey (CW) and cattle manure (CM) by an innovative two-stage process, based on concentric acidogenic and methanogenic phases, designed for enhancing performance and reducing footprint. The optimum CW to CM ratio was evaluated under batch conditions. Thereafter, codigestion was implemented under continuous-flow conditions comparing one- and two-stage processes. The results demonstrated that the addition of CM in codigestion with CW greatly improved the anaerobic process. The highest methane yield was obtained co-treating the two substrates at equal ratio by using the innovative two-stage process. The proposed system reached the maximum value of 258mLCH4gvs-1, which was more than twice the value obtained by the one-stage process and 10% higher than the value obtained by the two-stage one. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd

New domestic landscapes: a collaborative autoethnography in times of Coronavirus in Italy

In this article we present the results of research on transformations of everyday domestic life during the first Italian coronavirus lockdown. Covid-19 has shaken many of our convictions; it has “suspended time,” forcing us to live in a condition of uncertainty. People have had to re-think their priorities and the ways they live in and use domestic space, managing a relationship of power and agency between themselves and the house. The house, as a tyrannical agent, forced people to adapt to it, and to act as a consequence of changes dictated by Covid-19. This redefinition process has brought to light themes of great anthropological interest: new rituals, new definitions of cohabitation spaces, new needs and new fears. As it was impossible to conduct classical fieldwork, we chose to use the method of collaborative autoethnography, involving a group of 30 students in our research. We were thus able to observe changing everyday habits and the reorganization of spaces for purposes of work or sociality, as well as changes in relations with the outside world, mediated by social networks

Sesso e genere, oltre natura e cultura
