Sustainability Competences and Pedagogical Approaches at Griffith University

    No full text
Griffith University was founded in 1971 as a Higher Education Institution (HEI) to introduce Australia’s first degrees in environmental science and Asian studies. It has 50,000 students and 4,000 staff members across its five physical and one digital campus. Griffith University is ranked within the top 2% of global universities and has a long history of education for sustainable development. This chapter presents the results from 70 survey respondents. The focus of the university is on cross-cutting themes, followed by social issues, economic issues, and environmental ones. The contribution is medium and the strength is high. The ranking of the competences shows Critical thinking and analysis is the highest one, followed by Inter-personal relations and collaboration. The ranking of the pedagogical approaches resulted in Project- or Problem-based learning and Lecturing being the highest ranked, followed by Case Studies. The correlation analysis showed that Jigsaw/Interlinked Teams developed the most competences, followed by Eco-justice and community, Community service learning, and Place-based environmental education. The competences most developed were Strategic action, and Personal involvement. The results show that more insights into the implications of sustainability issues and how they are addressed could be considered in the different departments/schools of the university. The results also present a snapshot of key pedagogical approaches that have been undertaken at Griffith University to develop sustainability competences.Full Tex

The research paper reported a meta-analysis supporting the utility of the five-factor model of personality (FFM) as a predictor of an individual's performance on the job.Full Tex

Attachment theory predicts the formation of romantic relationships

    No full text
This essay reviews the literature on attachment theory. Attachment theory and the methods used to assess attachment systems are critiqued. The usefulness of attachment theory for predicting romantic relationships is also examined. Attachment theory is found to be a valid and reliable construct, especially that of secure attachment. In contrast non-secure attachment systems are less reliable. The secure attachment system is also shown to be a significant predictor of acquiring a stable romantic relationship in adulthood. Directions for future research are provided, especially with regard to refining non-secure attachment constructs.Full Tex

Hybrid Multiagent Systems: Intelligent Agile Oriented Architectures for Enterprise Integration

    No full text
This research defines the business requirements for forming a Network capable of instantiating Virtual Enterprises (VEs); investigates the current state of the art for enterprise and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) architectures; and develops an improved intelligent software architecture for managing a dynamic, VE-forming Network of Partners. What is lacking in the current body of knowledge are methodologies and reusable partial models for how to specify and design ICT architectures that support complex coordination in an agile and intelligent manner. There is no generic method or comprehensive architecture today which would give businesses the ability to build and maintain such collaboration in a dynamically changing virtual enterprise. This problem is particularly evident in one-of-a-kind production, because the VEs must be created every time a large project is undertaken. Enterprises need to remain competitive by developing products which are specific to individual requirements, and developed globally to leverage resources. This research proposes that an enterprise can be represented as a set of hybrid, flexible, autonomous agents which encapsulate decision centres and other resources in order to execute business functions. The goal of this research is to define and develop an improved software architecture which supports globally distributed functional and resource management. The proposed ICT architecture will be developed and demonstrated using state-of-the-art protocols and platforms. The focus is on supporting: intelligent and agile interaction with customers and other Network stakeholders optimisation of the supply chain through collaboration and reasoning integrating heterogenous information and human activity systems The research objectives are to answer the following questions: 1. What are the business requirements, design parameters and design constraints for managing a dynamic, VE-forming Network of Partners? 2. Based on this design space, how can suitable supporting software architectures be specified? 3. Is the developed hypothesis valid? The fundamental research hypotheses are: 1. a VE-forming Network of Partners can be designed as a multiagent system of hybrid agents 2. such a design can be implemented using current protocols and platforms The research specifies and validates the architectural design of the Agile-Oriented Architecture, which contains several important design attributes currently not present in any of the current ICT architectures.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)School of Information and Communication TechnologyFull Tex

Design and Development of Galectin-Specific Inhibitors

    No full text
Galectins are a family of carbohydrate binding proteins found in the human body and are involved in the modulation of vital biological functions. These biological functions can be initiated through interactions formed between the conserved carbohydrate recognition domain and [beta]-galactoside-containing glycoconjugates. Due to their modulatory roles in cell homeostasis, galectins have been implicated in the progression of different diseases such as in tumours, cancers and inflammatory disorders, making them novel therapeutic targets. The activities of galectin can be inhibited by blocking interactions with its natural ligands and protein binding partners, through the design and development of small carbohydrate ligands. The amino acid residues that partake in the binding of carbohydrate ligands are highly conserved across the galectin family, leading to ligands binding in a very specific manner. To avoid cross-reactivity with other galectins in the body which could be detrimental in drug therapies, the development of selective inhibitors is essential. Galectin-3 and -4C have been determined to play roles in the progression of cancer and different inflammatory disorders and are the primary focus for this research project. The research studies presented and discussed in this thesis, revolve around the use of structural determination and computational techniques to identify and inform on the intricacies of the galectin binding site, to help aid in the development of galectin-specific inhibitors. Rob and Bert in Tokyo

    No full text
This essay is steeped in contradiction: it is as much an attempt at mourning, coping, and letting go as it is an exercise in remembrance, rediscovery, and reconnection. One of the many areas of international legal scholarship where Rob Cryer left his mark is his oeuvre on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE). To pay tribute to, and get re-acquainted with, Rob-the-person, I re-read his 2010 article on the ‘dignified dissenter’ in Tokyo, Dutch Judge Bert Röling. In that article, Rob uses the memoranda and the opinion of Bert-the-judge to assess his conceptual and legal contributions to the IMTFE judgment. They also serve him as a vehicle to get a better grasp of the author behind the text and the values and dilemmas that shaped Röling’s positions on the IMTFE bench. What more can we learn and understand about Rob Cryer while ‘reading Rob reading Bert’? What aspects of Röling’s legacy did he choose to foreground, and what qualities did he appreciate most? How did Rob treat his character when shedding light on the more contentious elements of Röling’s work? Even if this essay fails in its therapeutic purpose, it might still add a few mosaic pieces to the collective construction of Rob’s portrait in this volume
