"Doug. Griffith 138705 RAAF. 6RSU. Fenton 24. Liberator'S Sqdn. 1945"Index to the location of names on the quilt ; G2Doug Griffith 138705. Royal Australian Air Force. 6 Repair and Salvage Unit. Fenton. 24. Liberator'S Squadron. 1945.These patches were signed by people who visited the Northern Territory during the Year of Commemoration of the Bombing of Darwin, 1992, or who wrote from interstate or overseas during that year. The quilt measures almost five metres by three, and is designed to resemble a typical porcellanite stone wall as can still be seen on some old Darwin buildings. In addition to the names on the Quilt there are nurse's colourpatch, the emblem of the Civil Construction Corps and twenty pictures of sites which would have been familiar to people of Darwin at the time. Some of the buildings can still be seen today, whereas others have disappeared as a result of enemy action, Cyclone Tracy or the indomitable march of progress. The illustrations on the Quilt were based on photographs taken during the war years and now held in the collections of the Northern Territory Library. The Quilt was made by Jenny Armour, and took about 18 months of weekends and other free time to complete, using techniques of patchwork, applique, and machine embroidery and was quilted using 100% Australian wool batting
‘Getting to know you – interviews with first year students in the School of Dentistry and Oral Health (DOH) in 2008’
The First Year students studying Dental Technology, Oral Health Therapy (OHT) and Dental Science (DSc) spend Semester 1 at the Parklands campus. They study at the Centre for Medicine and Oral at Southport in Semester 2 for one course only. 2007 saw a high failure rate (21/101 first year students) which did not auger well for our recruitment and retention (R&R) statistics when compared with similar programs in Australia. Lower R&R rates have an impact on funding for Griffith University. To try and reduce the first year failure rate in 2008 and to improve the R&R rate, the First Year Advisor sent out an email invitation to meet face-to-face with the 137 First Years in Semester 1. This idea was borrowed from Dr Ricardo Simeoni from Physiotherapy and Exercise Science in the Health Group at Griffith University.Griffith Health, School of Dentistry and Oral HealthFull Tex
The link between product market reform and macro-economic performance
Value-added per capita in EU countries has lagged behind the US. This is despite widespread reforms to product markets across EU countries aimed at increasing growth. This study analyses the macro-economic impact of product market reforms undertaken in the European Union over the 1980s and 1990s by examining a large number of regulations and reforms across EU countries.product market, product market reforms, regulations, macro-economic performance, allocative efficiency, productive efficiency, dynamic efficiency, aggregate economy, Griffith, Harisson

Bat Swing Analysis in Cricket
Technology in sports has had great impact during the last two decades. A lot of time, human power and cost are involved in existing batting research methods. The reliability and usefulness of these outcomes is prone to error and dependent on the human ability. In this project, miniature, inexpensive, user and match-friendly inertial sensors were used to extract the cricket bat swing features. The data was validated through existing tools. The object of this work was to demonstrate that accelerometers offer significant advantages in cricket batting analysis. Experimental and theoretical work involved ball free and ball-hit swing profiles.
Bat swing was analysed using accelerometer sensors and was validated using a rigid pendulum. Good agreement was obtained between the measured angles by inclinometer and static sensor (r=0.99), and between the swing angles estimated from equation and dynamic sensor (r=0.88). Hits on the pivot arm showed the optimum contact location to maximize the energy transfer to the ball. A non-linear pendulum equation with moving pivot was solved numerically to model for swing angles in straight drive. The derived equation showed good agreement with the acceleration data (r=0.91). The effect of initial angular velocity, the radius of rotation and phase angle of the pivot on the acceleration profile were strongly correlated with the maximum acceleration peak (r≡0.99).Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Griffith School of EngineeringScience, Environment, Engineering and TechnologyFull Tex
Personality measures under focus: The NEO-PI-R and the MBTI
The concept of personality has for a long time attracted the interests of psychologists. As a result there are numerous theoretical approaches to the measurement of personality. This report will present two of these approaches and further discuss, compare, and contrast a personality measure of each approach. The personality approaches and measures under focus are the well known trait model, Big Five and its widely used measure, the Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Personality Inventory Revised (NEO-PI-R) (Costa & McCrae, 1992), and the also commonly applied, but at the same time often criticized, Myer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (Myers, 1962), which is based on Carl Jung's type theory (1921, as cited in Jung, 1971). In this paper, a brief description of the personality concept and the usefulness of personality measures are initially presented. Following this, a general discussion of the Big Five model and the MBTI will be presented. In the following sections, the NEO-PI-R and MBTI measures are described in more detail, concluding with a comparison between these two measures.Full Tex
Sustainability Competences and Pedagogical Approaches at Griffith University
Griffith University was founded in 1971 as a Higher Education Institution (HEI) to introduce Australia’s first degrees in environmental science and Asian studies. It has 50,000 students and 4,000 staff members across its five physical and one digital campus. Griffith University is ranked within the top 2% of global universities and has a long history of education for sustainable development. This chapter presents the results from 70 survey respondents. The focus of the university is on cross-cutting themes, followed by social issues, economic issues, and environmental ones. The contribution is medium and the strength is high. The ranking of the competences shows Critical thinking and analysis is the highest one, followed by Inter-personal relations and collaboration. The ranking of the pedagogical approaches resulted in Project- or Problem-based learning and Lecturing being the highest ranked, followed by Case Studies. The correlation analysis showed that Jigsaw/Interlinked Teams developed the most competences, followed by Eco-justice and community, Community service learning, and Place-based environmental education. The competences most developed were Strategic action, and Personal involvement. The results show that more insights into the implications of sustainability issues and how they are addressed could be considered in the different departments/schools of the university. The results also present a snapshot of key pedagogical approaches that have been undertaken at Griffith University to develop sustainability competences.Full Tex
