Relationship between refined Griffith criterion and power laws for cracking
Rice [J. Mech. Phys. Solids 26 (1978) 61] proposes a refined Griffith criterion, (G-2γ)ȧ≥0 at any local crack front, where G is the Irwin's energy release rate, γ is the surface free energy and ȧ is the rate of crack advance. The refined version implies that the entropy production inequality should holds locally rather than globally from the thermodynamic point of view. Within the irreversible thermodynamic framework developed by Rice [J. Mech. Phys. Solids 19 (1971) 433; Constitutive Equations in Plasticity, 1975, p. 23], it is revealed in this paper that the entropy production inequality holds for each internal variable if its rate is a homogeneous function in its conjugate force. It is further shown that widely-used power laws for crack growth are just certain homogeneous kinetic rate laws, so it is concluded that the power laws directly lead to the refined Griffith criterion. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Screening for Financial Toxicity in Clinical Care With Finance-Related Outcome Measures
“Financial toxicity” (FT) describes both the objective financial burden and subjective financial distress from a cancer diagnosis and its treatment.1,2 Up to 48% of cancer survivors report experiencing financial burden due to direct (eg, out-of-pocket expenses) and indirect (eg, loss of income) costs.3 Financial toxicity exists in all health systems including user-pay, universal, and hybrid settings.3,4 Depending on a patient's individual circumstances, cancer diagnosis and treatments, and coping strategies,3 this burden may cause significant financial distress, reduced adherence with treatment, and delayed or forgone treatment, which lead to poorer health outcomes.2,3,5 Our systematic review showed a 3-fold increased risk of depression and anxiety in cancer survivors experiencing FT.6 Individuals living in the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas are at a greater risk of FT related to cancer care.7No Full Tex

Intermediate grazing intensities by sheep increase soil bacterial diversities in an Inner Mongolian steppe
Ungulate grazing is known to play a crucial role in regulating nutrient cycling and controlling plant community structure and productivity in grassland ecosystems. However, little is known about the effects of grazing intensities on soil bacterial community structure and diversity, particularly at the long-term scale. In this study, we measured plant biomass and diversity, soil characteristics and bacterial community structure, and diversity in a 16-year field experiment that had four grazing intensity treatments (non-grazed, CK; low-intensity grazing (LG), moderate-intensity grazing (MG), and high-intensity grazing (HG)) in an Inner Mongolian typical grassland. The CK, LG, MG, and HG sites were grazed by 0.00, 1.33, 4.00, and 6.67 sheep ha-1, respectively. Bacterial community structure and diversity under grazing intensity treatments were assessed with PCR amplification of DNAs extracted from soils and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) separation. The results showed that the CK soil had higher moisture, organic C, NH4 +-N, and NO3 --N concentrations than grazed soils, and the HG treatment had the lowest plant biomass and diversity across all the treatments. Principal component analysis of DGGE patterns showed that the LG and MG treatments were different from the CK and HG treatments. In addition, soil bacterial diversities in the LG and MG treatments were significantly higher than those in the other treatments. The relationships between environmental variables and soil bacterial community structure were assessed using redundancy analysis, and we found that soil moisture content, Artemisia frigida biomass, and pH were the best indicator of the changes in soil bacterial community structure among all the treatments. Overall, our results indicated that intermediate grazing intensities (LG and MG) increased soil bacterial diversities, and along with previous studies in this area, we suggested the MG treatment was the most suitable management practice in the Inner Mongolian steppe, not only supporting greater livestock amounts but also harboring greater bacterial diversity.Griffith Sciences, Griffith School of EnvironmentFull Tex
Biological monitoring of chlorpyrifos exposure to rice farmers in Vietnam
Chlorpyrifos is the most common organophosphate insecticide registered for use in Vietnam and is widely used in agriculture, particularly rice farming. However, chlorpyrifos exposure to and adverse effects on farmers has not been evaluated. In this study, biological monitoring of chlorpyrifos exposure in a group of rice farmers was conducted after a typical application event using back-pack spraying. Urine samples (24 h) were collected from the rice farmers before and post insecticide application. Samples were analysed for 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol (TCP), the major urinary metabolite of chlorpyrifos, using an enzymatic pre-treatment before extraction followed by HPLC-MS/MS. Absorbed Daily Dose (ADD) of chlorpyrifos for farmers were then estimated from urinary TCP levels, expressed as lg g 1 creatinine. The analytical method for urinary TCP had a low detection limit (0.6 lg L 1), acceptable recovery values (80-114%), and low relative percentage differences in duplicate and repeated samples. Post-application chlorpyrifos ADD of farmers varied from 0.4 to 94.2 lg kg 1 (body weight) d 1 with a mean of 19.4 lg kg 1 d 1 which was approximately 80-fold higher than the mean baseline exposure level (0.24 lg kg 1 d 1). Hazard Quotients (ratio of the mean ADD for rice farmers to acute oral reference dose) calculated using acute oral reference doses recommended by United States and Australian agencies varied from 2.1 (Australian NRA), 4.2 (US EPA) to 6.9 (ATSDR). Biological monitoring using HPLC-MS/MS analysis of urinary TCP (24 h) was found to be an effective method for measuring chlorpyrifos exposure among farmers. This case study found that Vietnamese rice farmers had relatively high exposures to chlorpyrifos after application, which were likely to have adverse health effects.Griffith Sciences, Griffith School of EnvironmentFull Tex
Azimuthal anisotropy of Lg attenuation in eastern Tibetan Plateau
The Q of seismic phase Lg is measured to approach the crustal Q(beta), which can be used to infer crustal rheology. A reverse two-station/event method is used to measure the interstation Q(Lg), which theoretically eliminates effects from the source and site response. Strong azimuthal anisotropy of 1/Q(Lg) in northern Tibet is observed, which approximately correlates with the seismic velocity anisotropy observed using both surface waves and teleseismic S waves. Both the intrinsic and scattering attenuation contribute the isotropic Q, whereas the anisotropic Q may be associated with the fractures and faults in the crust. Strong 1/Q(Lg) is observed in the northwestern Songpan-Ganzi fold belt, where the high-Q directions correspond with the orientations of major strike-slip faults. Intrinsic and scattering Q values are estimated for different tectonic terranes in eastern Tibetan Plateau. The intrinsic Q values are approximately 500 in the northern Tibetan Plateau, which suggests a hot (similar to 700 degrees C) crust, consistent with low seismic velocity measurements. Our result suggests that the crust of northwestern Songpan-Ganzi fold belt may be hotter than that of the Qiangtang terrane, which may be related to the strain heating along the major strike slip fault zones that dominate the northernmost Tibet.Geochemistry & GeophysicsSCI(E)5ARTICLEnull11
