Preisach-Mayergoyz approach to fatigue-induced irreversibility
The Preisach-Mayergoyz (PM) approach has been widely used to describe hysteresis in different fields. Among these, various types of reversible hysteretic elastic behavior have been succesfully modeled, inclusing quasi-static, fast and slow dynamics, modulation, and so on. Here, we propose an approach to extend the PM formulation to also treat irreversible phenomena, such as fatigue and damage progression. For this purpose, we introduce a multilevel scheme based on nested PM descriptions. The mathematical formulation is outlined and a phenomenological application presente
Damage Assessment in Solids through Nonlinear Ultrasonics in the Time Domain
This study reports the main results obtained from the application of a NDT method based on nonlinear
ultrasounds and denoted as Scaling Subtraction Method (SSM) to several case studies, involving different types
of consolidated granular media and different damage mechanisms. The effectiveness of the SSM in describing
damage evolution is discussed with reference to both diffuse damage, as induced by mechanical or thermal loads
and localized damage, as in the case of degradation of
the interfacial surfaces between different portions of a
solid under chemical attack. Limitations and potentialities of the method are discussed with respect to other
damage assessment indicators
The “Terranova” render of the Engineering Faculty in Bologna (1931–1935): reasons for an outstanding durability
In the first half of the twentieth century, a variety of dry-mix renders with different trade marks spread across Europe. Their stated performance made them attractive for buildings where the overhanging eave was absent, hence they found broad application in rationalist buildings and districts. However, their composition and properties are barely known. In this paper, the Terranova render of the Engineering Faculty in Bologna was characterised, to investigate the reasons for its outstanding durability. Unexpectedly, the render was found to be constituted by dolomitic lime and only a small amount of white cement and exhibited a remarkable strength. The presence of air voids seems due the use of air entraining agents and may have contributed to the frost resistance of this render during 80 years. The results are expected to contribute not only to the knowledge of Terranova render, but also to a better understanding of durability issues for new renders
A Genetic Algorithms' approach to the exploration of parameter space in mesoscopic Multicellular Tumour Spheroid models
The design of accurate in silico cancer models capable of quantitatively predicting tumor growth is an important goal in cancer research today. Mesoscopic models have shown great promise in this scenario; however, their use is often inhibited by the difficulty in correctly assigning parameter values. In this paper, enabled by an extremely computationally efficient mesoscopic model, we propose a Genetic Algorithms' (GAs) approach to the exploration of parameter space. Analysis of the results suggest that this novel application of GAs to tumor growth models both facilitates the attribution of parameter values to the fitting of experimental data and, more importantly, lends insight to the role played by the different parameters in regulating the tumor model growth

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
