On the formation mechanisms and properties of MAX phases: A review

    No full text
MAX phases are a family of ternary carbide or nitride ceramics possessing a layered crystal structure and, due to their chemical bonds having a mixed covalent-ionic-metallic nature, have unique properties combining those of metals and ceramics. In this review, the formation mechanisms of MAX phases from elemental and compound powders are reviewed in detail, as the formation mechanisms are closely related to the unique properties of well-synthesized MAX phases. The stability of MAX phases in some harsh external environments is significantly influenced by the defect population, allowing the mechanisms of defect formation and migration to strongly influence their self-healing performance and radiation tolerance. The properties of MAX phases can be tailored by creating solid solutions, which have lattice distortions, and texturing which results in the preferential orientation of plate-like grains.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Novel Aerospace MaterialsOLD Surface and Interface EngineeringPLD Infra & constructio

Millimeter and radio observations of z~6 quasars

    No full text
We present millimeter and radio observations of 13 SDSS quasars at reshifts z~6. We observed eleven of them with the Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer Array (MAMBO-2) at the IRAM 30m-telescope at 250 GHz and all of them with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz. Four sources are detected by MAMBO-2 and six are detected by the VLA at >=3 sigma level. These sources, together with another 6 published in previous papers, yield a submillimeter/millimeter and radio observed SDSS quasar sample at z~6. We use this sample to investigate the far-infrared (FIR) andradio properties of optically bright quasars in the early universe. We compare this sample to lower redshift samples of quasars observed inthe submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths ((sub)mm), and find that the distribution of the FIR to B band optical luminosity ratio (L_FIR/L_B) is similar from z~2 to 6. We find a weak correlation between the FIR luminosity (L_FIR) and B band optical luminosity (L_B) byincluding the (sub)mm observed samples at all redshifts. Some strong (sub)mm detections in the z~6 sample have radio-to-FIR ratios within the range defined by star forming galaxies, which suggests possible co-eval star forming activity with the powerful AGN in these sources. We calculate the rest frame radio to optical ratios (R*_1.4=L_{v, 1.4GHz}/L_{v, 4400A}) for all of the VLA observed sources in the z~6 quasar sample. Only one radio detection in this sample, J083643.85+005453.3, has R*_1.4~40 and can be considered radio loud. There are no strong radio sources (R*_1.4>=100) among these SDSS quasars at z~6. These data are consistent with, although do not set strong constraints on, a decreasing radio-loud quasar fraction with increasing redshift

The Concept of Rationality and the Rationalization of Law in the Works of Max Weber

    No full text
The magnitude of Max Weber’s work is overwhelming. However, with it, comes its great insight into the social reality. Reinhard Bendix has called Weber the magical name of the modern social sciences. Agreeing with this claim, The Author of this article takes on one of the fundamental problems of the social sciences – the problematic concept of rationality. This concept remains a key element of the works of Max Weber. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to analyze the intricacies of its definition by the famous German scholar. First comes the analysis of the multiplicity of contexts in which Weber makes the use of the term rationality and the rationalization. Then, after the realization of the impossibility of a precise definition of the rationalization without taking the context into account, the transition to the rationalization of law follows. The look at the division of rationalization of law into various planes on which it can manifest its rationality or irrationality (be it the material or formal aspect) is concluded with the summary, where The Author poses questions about certain issues that require further research

Cultural analysis of two paragraphs of Jan Chryzostom Pasek’s MemoirsThe article was written as an outcome of the workshops organized during conference “Personal accounts in research experience”. Its aim was to present the differences between sociology, history, literary studies and history of culture. The aim of the author was to present a research method specific to cultural studies. Culture was understood, according to S. Pietraszko, as a way of living towards the values and as such it is a part of the Lebenswelt, whereas the typology of values was taken from the writings of Max Scheler. The analysis of historical sources is aimed at grasping a possible valuation in a given time and space. In two paragraphs of “Memoirs” by Jan Chryzostom Pasek particular types of values were found and a question about their precedence was asked. Dominant values in the Pasekʼs Lebenswelt were holiness and vitality. They were above in the hierarchy of values law, beauty and utility. The analysis enabled reconstruction of piety of Sarmatian memoirist, his image of God and his views about war, violence and community.  Cultural analysis of two paragraphs of Jan Chryzostom Pasek’s MemoirsThe article was written as an outcome of the workshops organized during conference “Personal accounts in research experience”. The Gallant-Lambert-Vanstone Decomposition Revisited

    No full text
The Gallant-Lambert-Vanstone method accelerates the computation of scalar multiplication [k]P of a point (or a divisor) P of prime order r on some algebraic curve (or its Jacobian) by using an efficient endomorphism phi on such curve. Suppose phi has minimal polynomial h(x) = Sigma(d)(i=0) a(i)x(i) is an element of Z[x], the question how to efficiently decompose the scalar k as [k] P = Sigma(d-1)(i=0)[k(i)]phi(i) (P) with max(i) log vertical bar k(i)vertical bar approximate to 1/d log r has drawn a lot of attention. In this paper we show the link between the lattice based decomposition and the division in Z[phi] decomposition, and propose a hybrid method to decompose k with max(i) vertical bar k(i)vertical bar <= 2((d-5)/4) d(dN(h))((d-1)/2)r(1/d), where N(h) = Sigma(d-1)(i=0) a(i)(2). In particular, we give explicit and efficient GLV decompositions for some genus 1 and 2 curves with efficient endomorphisms through decomposing the Frobenius map in Z[phi], which also indicate that the complex multiplication usually implies good properties for GLV decomposition. Our results well support the GLV method for faster implementations of scalar multiplications on desired curves.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000345588100013&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Computer Science, Theory & MethodsEICPCI-S(ISTP)

Coherent Stylization for Stereoscopic Augmented Reality

    No full text
In this paper, a method is proposed for stylizing stereoscopic augmented reality, while attempting to retain temporal and visual coherence. By tracking an AR marker and estimating a disparity map from stereo images, world positions of anchor points are tracked across frames and images, in order to move them with the scene. Additionally, the density of anchor points in the image is adjusted each frame to prevent areas from being over- or underpopulated with anchor points. The method is applied to a simple mosaic style and both quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate improved coherence when compared to a baseline. Besides that, the algorithm runs at near-interactive frame rates.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin

Analysing the implementation of the combination of ESG data, Big Data and AI within a financial institution, an explorative case study

    No full text
Over the last few years, regulations, changes in governance, and societal pressure have led to a push to rethink a firms’ approach to sustainability. This push created a need to place sustainability and numerous relevant technologies and approaches at the centre of the firms’ decision-making process. Within the financial industry, the combination of novel data technologies such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the inclusion of sustainability, or so-called “ESG”, Environment, Social, and governance data spearpoint this new ‘sustainable’ frontier. Literature shows that the implementation of the combination of ESG data, Big Data and AI, within a financial institution and as a corporate resource is a rather novel subject, with no directly related literature available. Thus, this thesis aims to address the topic of implementing ESG data, Big Data and AI within a financial institution. The main research question answered within this thesis is set out to explore this combination of sustainability data, also known as ESG data, Big Data and AI. This study aims to provide a starting point to fill this knowledge gap by creating novel theoretical propositions to be tested in future research. The following research question has been devised to address this research problem. What observations can be extracted from assessing the introduction of a Big Data and AI toolset applying ESG data within a procedure? The main research question is answered through the use of theoretical propositions. These novel theoretical propositions illustrate key observations made during the case study. For each proposition, future research directions are given. These propositions, thus, the answer to the main research question are:- The perception within a firm of using Big Data and AI within a process could affect the learning rate and the learning approach taken by the user. This affects the acceptance of the technology. Thus, the perception could affect the adoption rate of Big Data and AI within a firm.- If Big Data and AI are used within a process, people tend to be convinced by Big Data and AI used within the process, thus Big Data and AI can be used to convince people of the validity of the results of the process.- If conferred management information is substantiated by an information process using Big Data and AI, then people do not have the tendency to acknowledge the inherent biases in such processes.- If Big Data and AI are used within a process, data quality and source are perceived as of less importance.- There could be causation between one's knowledge of Big Data and AI, and the perception of bias when assessing a process that uses Big Data and AI.- ESG data is context-dependent, illustrating that a structured or unstructured approach to ESG data depends on the application of ESG data.Management of Technology (MoT
