2014 Spring.Colorado State University Art Department capstone project.Capstone contains the artist's statement, a list of works, and images of works. The artist's statement: There is movement in every aspect of life. Movement is the essence of life, from the smallest atoms in our bodies to our planet functioning as one living organism. I am influenced by movement in the elements and how it relates to the world that surrounds us. I explore movement in the element of water through aquatic themes, specifically water dwelling creatures and the fluid motion of water. Through the use of kinetic elements in my work I connect the fluidity of movement to explore the element of air. The element of air is also evident in the study birds and flight. I explore the element of earth through the use of my materials, metal and stone. Specifically, I am interested in unique stone settings and fabrication of settings designed around the stone. The element of fire appears in various hot fabrication techniques, and in themes of fire and heat. My work captures the experience of these four elements as we move through the world around us

PURPOSE: To compare the visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in eyes with the AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon) and eyes with the monofocal AcrySof SA60AT IOL. SETTING: Policlinico Umberto I, Department of Ophthalmology, Rome, and private clinical practice, Rome, Italy. METHODS: One hundred eyes had phacoemulsification cataract extraction and implantation of a ReSTOR multifocal OIL in the capsular bag. Inclusion criteria were corneal astigmatism less than 1.5 diopters (D), myopia less than 4.0 D, and no associated ocular disease. A complete ophthalmic examination, including uncorrected visual acuity, best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity, was performed 6 months postoperatively. Results were compared with those in 40 eyes with the AcrySof monofocal IOL single-piece IOL. RESULTS: In the multifocal group, 90 eyes (90%) had an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/25 or better (logMAR <0.10) and an uncorrected near visual acuity at 35 cm of J3 or better (logMAR 0.14). The multifocal group and monofocal group had similar distance uncorrected and best corrected visual acuities; however, the multifocal group had significantly better near uncorrected acuity. The mean contrast sensitivity values were 18.28 dB (static program) and 17.95 dB (dynamic program) in the multifocal group and 19.18 dB (static program) and 21.2 dB (dynamic program) in the monofocal group. CONCLUSIONS: The ReSTOR multifocal IOL provided a satisfactory full range of vision; 92% of the patients achieved total spectacle independence. Contrast sensitivity was lower than with the SA60AT monofocal IOL

OBJECTIVES This case report presents the possible and unexpected clinical severe complications of a bonded mandibular lingual retainer and an achievable therapeutic solution. MATERIALS AND METHODS 18-year-old boy comes to our observation; he reports a previous orthodontic treatment and not to carry out regular check-ups. Intraoral examination shows: class I malocclusion, flexible and intact spiral wire retainer bonded on the lingual surface of the lower front teeth, inferior midline deviated to the left side, lower incisors proclined and inclined to the left side, both mandibular canines and incisors wrongly torqued. Orthopantomography (OPT) shows a moderate root resorption of the lower front teeth with a very important divergence of the roots of left canine and lower incisors. Cone beam computed tomography shows the root of the right canine almost completely out of the bone on its lingual side and the root of the left canine out of the bone on its buccal side. We start a new orthodontic treatment to realign the teeth and to correct the transverse malocclusion. At the end of treatment, the smile of the patient was normalized with a good balance of the occlusal plane. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS At the end of treatment, the smile of the patient was normalized with a good balance of the occlusal plane. A good and stable molar and canine class I occlusion was achieved with correct overjet, overbite and transversal relationships. Orthopantomography showed the correction of the inclination of the lower front teeth with a moderate apical root resorption of the four lower incisors that was present also in the initial OPT. CBCT showed the correction of the axial inclination of the right canine with a good lingual bone thickness. On the left canine the good axial inclination achieved was evident; lingual bone thickness was ideal but on the buccal side there was no adequate amount of cortical bone. Although fixed retainers are generally adequate in preventing relapse, sometimes their inadvertent activity causes distortion of the dental arch. If not periodically checked by clinicians, such reported in this case report, fixed retainers may cause devastating complications and orthodontic retreatment could be the solution in restoring the physiological arch shape. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Fixed retainers can cause major complications for the dental elements affected by the retainer in terms of unwanted inclinations and movements with consequent damage to the periodontal structures. Regular monitoring by clinicians is therefore highly recommended. Orthodontic retreatment may prove to be the ideal solution to restore the physiological shape of the arch and the correct inclination of the roots of the affected teeth. I risultati ottenuti dimostrano che 60 giorni dopo l’ intervento la refrazione e la lunghezza assiale degli occhi operati presentano cambiamenti, rispetto ai valori preoperatori, minori in confronto agli interventi in cui la chiusura del cerchiaggio viene effettuata con filo non assorbibileEncircling scleral buckling of the eye is one of the elective surgical methods in retinal rhegmatogenous detachment; the elements available are characterized by the breadth of indentation and by whether or not they are absorbable. Consequently, they have a permanent or temporary effect of indentation. It is the purpose of this study to estimate the validity of a silicone band that has been closed with Vicryl 6/0 absorbable thread. A total of 8 eyes were observed, which had undergone retinal rhegmatogenous detachment using this technique, with the purpose of estimating the changes in refraction and axial length. The results obtained show that 60 days after surgery, refraction and axial length of the eyes changes, as compared to preoperative values, and they are less if compared to surgery in which closing of the scleral bucklingis carried out with not absorbable thread

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
