    No full text
In this roundtable, Dr. Jason Chambers discusses his book Advertising Revolutionary: The Life and Work of Tom Burrell (University of Illinois Press, 2024), which focuses on Tom Burrell\u27s influence on African American representation in advertising. Participants, including scholars and industry professionals, examine Burrell\u27s leadership style, shaped by his experiences at agencies like Leo Burnett and Needham, where he faced imposter syndrome and challenges in getting his creative work recognized. These experiences inspired his approach to nurturing African American talent and fostering cultural sensitivity. Participants also detail Burrell\u27s philosophy of positive realism, which focused on authentic, positive portrayals of Black life versus stereotypical media depictions. Burrell\u27s upbringing, particularly his relationship with his father and his mother\u27s chronicling of his career, also influenced his determination and leadership. The conversation covers the generational shift in leadership at Burrell Communications and the ongoing challenges of diversity and authentic representation in the industry. The discussion concludes with advice for future image-makers focused on resilience, cultural understanding, and meaningful engagement with diverse audiences—all of which were keys to Burrell\u27s success and legacy

Burrell v. Armijo: The Role of Comity in Federal Court Review of Tribal Court Judgments

    No full text
This article discusses the on-going issue of tribal versus federal judicial power. While tribal courts have been recognized as an important aspect of tribal sovereignty, federal precedent has diluted tribal authority. This dilution of authority is evident by the restriction on jurisdiction given to the tribal courts by the federal government. The author explores this issue using the case of Burrell v. Armijo. She contends that this Tenth Circuit case demonstrates the continued undermining of tribal jurisdiction and that the general rule for federal courts to give great deference to tribal courts was not properly applied, leading to continued weakening of tribal jurisdiction and tribal sovereignty by the federal judiciary

Christian religion as artistic and narrative technique in James Baldwin's go tell it on a mountain

    No full text
James Baldwin, the author of Go Tell It on the Mountain, grew up to experience some socio-economic problems, especially racial discrimination, that his African-American contemporaries suffered in the United States. As a writer he chose the novel as a medium to express his feelings and, indirectly suggest ways of solving some of the problems. In the novel, and through his characters, Baldwin explored such problems as hunger, lack of love, poverty, racial inequality and poor education of the Negroes, as well as the hypocrisy of the church. As he did so, he made use of Christian imagery as artistic and narrative technique. My examination of how well he used the technique is evaluated in this thesis

The Hirsch spectrum: a novel tool for analysing scientific journals

    No full text
This paper introduces the Hirsch spectrum (h-spectrum) for analyzing the academic reputation of a scientific journal. h-Spectrum is a novel tool based on the Hirsch (h) index. It is easy to construct: considering a specific journal in a specific interval of time, h-spectrum is defined as the distribution representing the h-indexes associated to the authors of the journal articles. This tool allows defining a reference profile of the typical author of a journal, compare different journals within the same scientific field, and provide a rough indication of prestige/reputation of a journal in the scientific community. h-Spectrum can be associated to every journal. Ten specific journals in the Quality Engineering/Quality Management field are analyzed so as to preliminarily investigate the h-spectrum characteristic
