The language of gestures in some of El Greco's altarpieces
No full textThis study explores El Greco's language of gestures. The first part will explain the
preconditions for the general development towards rhetorical gestures and draw
parallels with El Greco's artistic development in the sphere of gestures. In addition,
handbooks on gestures are introduced. The second part will analyse how El Greco
applied gestures, using examples of his paintings .. It will reveal how El Greco
developed some gestures over more than thirty years, and how he creates with their
help an intense concentrated mood in his paintings. It will also demonstrate how he
worked by means of hyperbole to evoke an inspiring atmosphere, how he created
space with the help of gestures and gaze, and how he transformed the meaning of
some 'model' gestures he took over from famous Italian painters. Finally, this work
seeks to renew and intensify the analysis of gestures in painting as a way of
approaching the paintings and revealing layers of meaning that can not be found by an
analysis solely focused on iconographic topics. In this study the body is taken as a
mediator of signs, difficult to read, but decipherable. This study is intended to be a
step forward in approaching a deeper understanding of the codified language of
gesture. It should open the way to an intensified concern with the language of
gestures, with the reading of bodily signs in paintings

No full textGreco makes the case that within the human rights framework there is a serious problem regarding accessibility, what he deems the ‘Accessibility as a Human Right Divide’ Problem (AHRD Problem). The AHRD Problem highlights the divide between accessibility as a human right per se versus accessibility as an instrument for the fulfilment of human rights. Greco critically rejects the former, skilfully arguing how accessibility is indeed a proactive principle and that access is a necessary requirement for achieving human rights. As a case in point, Greco closes with an example from South Africa, showing how full acknowledgement of the AHRD Problem, and the interpretation of accessibility as a means, and not an end, has the ability to transform the field of media accessibility

No full textLa redazione in lingua greca dei testi del Nuovo Testamento ha dato luogo, nel corso del tempo, a interpretazioni diverse, fra le quali è emersa la possibilità che sia esistito un "greco degli ebrei", o greco-giudaico, di cui si potrebbero cogliere tracce anche nelle più antiche versioni greche della Bibbia, nonché nella Settanta. In questo contributo sono esaminate le varie ipotesi sul presunto "greco giudaico", valutandone la consistenza; mentre nella seconda parte è discusso lo status del giudeo-greco, ossia di una giudeo-lingua effettivamente nota nell'Egeo sin dall'alto medioevo e rimasta in uso fino almeno alla metà del XX secolo
