La vie à bord

A living area was provided on-board. Located to aft, between the transom and the helmsman’s post, it included kitchenware and tools. Around the lower section of a dolium re-used as a hearth, there were various ceramics for preparing food (kettles, a mortar) and tableware (bowls, plates) that attested to on-board cooking. A count of this tableware determined the probable presence of three boatmen, one of who had engraved his initials (AT) on the reverse of a plate and on the neck of a jug. Some multi-use tools (billhook, hoe, flat iron) were also used by the boatmen for various chores on board.Une zone de vie était aménagée à bord. Située entre le tableau de poupe et la zone du barreur, sur l’arrière, elle comprenait un mobilier de cuisine et des outils. Autour d’un fond de dolium réutilisé comme foyer, ce sont des céramiques de préparation (bouilloires, mortier) et de la vaisselle (bols, assiettes), qui attestent d’une activité de cuisine à bord. Le comptage de cette vaisselle permet de déterminer la présence probable de trois bateliers dont l’un a gravé ses initiales (AT) sur le fond d’une assiette et sur le col d’une cruche. Des outils multifonctionnels (serpe vigneronne, houe, fer plat à douille) étaient également utilisés par les bateliers pour de menus travaux à bord.Djaoui David, Greck Sandra. La vie à bord.
