The premise is that the translation of a literary text into another language involves moving a cultural universe. In support of this perspective Francis Henrik Aubert#s view of cultural translation is opted, which takes both the linguistic and the extralinguistic aspects of the process into consideration, focusing on the importance of cultural markers, which should always be perceived in relation to the context in which they appear, and which constitute signs of an otherness which should be noted and respected in an attitude and an approach that refers to Antoine Berman's "auberge du lointain". Tenda dos Milagres is a novel which contains innumerable topics of anthropological, social and cultural interest; for this reason the study establishes a comparison between the task of the translator and that of the anthropologist: both of whom are perceived as cultural mediators. According to Clifford Geertz, culture is a system of symbols shared by all those who have given and continue to give shape to it, making it necessary for the anthropologist and the translator to come as close as possible to the point of view of the native, who is immersed in a well-defined cultural context even if he/she is unaware of the fact. In order to do this the anthropologist and translator alike should have a full understanding of this context. The novel under scrutiny is considered to be an example of culture as text, in accordance with the interpretative anthropological approach, and the translator is viewed as the translator of a culture, in this case the religious culture that permeates the text. The choices made by the translator, Elena Grechi, have been analysed from this perspective, in an attempt to ascertain whether they assist or hinder the understanding of an Italian reader, or whether they result in an ethnocentric translation. According to our analysis the language used in the novel constitutes a genuine linguistic syncretism - , which has no equivalent in the target language -, just as the religion described in the novel is itself syncretic, which makes the translation process much more comple

Covid-19 lightening the load factor in railway transport: Performance analysis in the north-west area of Milan

    No full text
Covid-19 has strongly influenced the mobility of people in several ways and the limitations of mobility in Europe and Italy have conditioned the flows of workers and travelers. Railways, which are one key transport sector, had a clear decrease in passengers all over the world. The analysis, based on six Lombard/Piedmont lines (North-West of Italy), was carried out in the periods immediately preceding and following the lockdown, in which it was possible to move without draconian restrictions, and with mostly regular railway traffic, but at the same time, the number of commuters and occasional travelers was reduced by 40–60%. Using official data from Trenitalia and Trenord, the role of load factor in the railway performance is analyzed, to verify the impact of a substantial reduction in passenger numbers on the overall performance of six railway lines with a special focus on peak hours. The results obtained are not univocal and provide interesting indications, in fact, for some lines, there is an improvement in performance while for others there are no statistically significant differences with the previous year that means a similar performance, which is a starting point for future developments of the work at the national or regional level

Sustainability in passenger transport: the relevance of punctuality in rail and modal choice in commuting

The overall purpose of this PhD research is the analysis of the sustainable passenger mobility, both on long and short-distance trips. Mobility plays a central role in the social system and it is a key driving force for socio-economic, global and local development, but it produces also negative externalities on the territory. The thesis has the aim to explain the main elements of sustainable mobility from a theoretical point of view and, successively, to apply these concepts to two empirical cases with the use of Italian real data. These empirical analyses can help in underling the importance of sustainable mobility and of the efforts to improve it, influencing the transport modal choices of the commuter journeys. The first case regards the most sustainable mode of transport for medium-long distance trips, the train, and particularly the problem of delay that strongly affects the performance of the train, influencing the modal choices of commuters. The analysis is based on data collected in the period 2013-2016 on the railway line from Milano to Genoa. The second case concerns medium-short trips, focusing on the issue of home-work commuting of a medium Italian university located in two different cities (Varese and Como) in the north of Italy. The data come from a survey performed in November 2017. Finally, the last chapter draws some conclusions and mentions some upcoming evolutions of mobility that could give a strong contribution in achieving sustainability

Evaluation of Railway Systems: A Network Approach

    Get PDF
Resilience and the efficiency of transportation systems are crucial for the economic development of geographical areas, and network analysis applied to railways can provide insight into the importance of branch lines and their impacts on the entire system. This paper explores the behavior of the ERC measure, a local robustness measure, on the railway network in Lombardy, Italy, and analyzes the impacts of deactivating stations or journeys on the network’s robustness. Changes in the topological properties of the network were studied by simulating potential external disturbances and analyzing the impact of deleting the most connected stations or railway lines. The numerical results show how the measures provided effectively identify critical stations and journeys within the network structure and outperform classical topological metrics. Since ERC measures take into account all of the alternative paths present in the network, they can provide valuable information for rerouting traffic along alternative paths in case of failures or disruptions. The paper’s original contribution lies in demonstrating the effectiveness of the ERC measure in identifying critical stations and journeys within the network structure

Introducing Age.Vol.A: digital tools to promote communication between seniors, foreign caregivers and families

This presentation introduces Age.Vol.A.– Ageing, Volunteers, Assistants. Multilingual tools for Assisting the Ageing, a research project on ageing issues focusing on the demographic and social situation of Varese, an 80,000-inhabitant city in North-West Italy, with 13% of its population over 65 and foreigners representing over 8% of the province’s population, a significant proportion of whom is employed as caregivers to assist elderly people at home. Age.Vol.A. starts from the assumption that, between home-assisted Italian seniors and their non-Italian caregivers, there exists a linguistic and cultural barrier as well as a digital divide, which tends to increase the physical and social isolation of the elderly population (Russo et al., 2019; Vicentini & Grego, 2019; Vicentini et al., 2020). The paper intends to offer an overview of the output of this research project, i.e. a multilingual website and a multilingual smartphone application aimed at providing the foreign caregivers with terminology and practical information related to their assisted and the institutions aimed to assist those who assist the elderly, from health and healthcare to administrative issues. The terminology is divided into three macro areas – health, institutions, daily life – with secondary fields according to various communicative situations. The concept of the digital tools rests on the notions of translanguaging in migrant communities (Canagarajah, 2013; Hafner & Jones, 2015; Schreiber, 2015) as a means to deploy communication practices which digital tools can support through adaptive moves through linguistic, textual, and audiovisual media. No full text

The European Tourism Industry in Crisis : a Stock Market Perspective

    Get PDF
This article aims to evaluate the market performance of the European tourism industry from 2004 to 2014, a period that includes the financial and economic crises, to highlight which macroeconomic factors influenced the industry stock returns. The Stoxx Europe 600 Travel & Leisure price index is used to proxy the industry stock performance, and a multifactor market model is employed to individuate which macroeconomic variables are able to drive tourism stock performance. Results highlight that tourism stock performance is influenced by market conditions and by uncertainty, measured through the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility index (VIX). Despite the importance of tourism in Europe and its contribution to the economic growth, there is scant evidence on the performance of this industry in this area and on its relationship with economic conditions. The article, to the best of knowledge, represents the first contribution on the performance of European tourism industry in crisis years with a macroeconomic perspective
