    Buddha Stories

    No full text
This book is again like all those I have known from Demi, delightfully and playfully illustrated. For each of the twelve spreads in this book, there is a right-hand page illustration done in gold on deep indigo. Each left-hand page is a Jataka story. Some are now familiar, like "The Lion King"; TT; and "The Clever Crab." Others touch on fable tropes, like "The Golden Goose" and "The Little Gray Donkey." Demi is described as a practicing Buddhist, and the Buddhist wisdom of stories like "The Beautiful Parrots" and the "Cunning Wolf" is apparent. This is a heart-warming book, and I am glad to have found it. It fits well with Demi's body of work.First editionFirst printingDem

Green index in semigroups : generators, presentations and automatic structures

    No full text
The Green index of a subsemigroup T of a semigroup S is given by counting strong orbits in the complement S n T under the natural actions of T on S via right and left multiplication. This partitions the complement S nT into T-relative H -classes, in the sense of Wallace, and with each such class there is a naturally associated group called the relative Schützenberger group. If the Rees index ΙS n TΙ is finite, T also has finite Green index in S. If S is a group and T a subgroup then T has finite Green index in S if and only if it has finite group index in S. Thus Green index provides a common generalisation of Rees index and group index. We prove a rewriting theorem which shows how generating sets for S may be used to obtain generating sets for T and the Schützenberger groups, and vice versa. We also give a method for constructing a presentation for S from given presentations of T and the Schützenberger groups. These results are then used to show that several important properties are preserved when passing to finite Green index subsemigroups or extensions, including: finite generation, solubility of the word problem, growth type, automaticity (for subsemigroups), finite presentability (for extensions) and finite Malcev presentability (in the case of group-embeddable semigroups).Peer reviewe

The fracture toughness of demi-regular lattices

    No full text
Funding Information: This work was supported by the Academy of Finland (grant 322007 ). Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Author(s)The properties of lattices are strongly influenced by their nodal connectivity; yet, previous studies have focused mainly on topologies with a single vertex configuration. This work investigates the potential of demi-regular lattices, with two vertex configurations, to outperform existing topologies, such as triangular and kagome lattices. We used finite element simulations to predict the fracture toughness of three elastic-brittle demi-regular lattices under modes I, II, and mixed-mode loading. The fracture toughness of two demi-regular lattices scales linearly with relative density ρ¯, and outperforms a triangular lattice by 15% under mode I and 30% under mode II. The third demi-regular lattice has a fracture toughness KIc that scales with ρ¯ and matches the remarkable toughness of a kagome lattice. Finally, a kinematic matrix analysis revealed that topologies with KIc∝ρ¯ have periodic mechanisms and this may be a key feature explaining their high fracture toughness.Peer reviewe

Analysing pattern formation in the Gray-Scott model: an XPPAUT tutorial

    No full text
The Gray-Scott model is a widely-studied autocatalytic model that exhibits a range of interesting pattern formation behaviour, as well as a rich structure of dynamics that includes many ideas from a typical undergraduate dynamical systems course, and some from beyond. Understanding the solutions to this model is arguably most easily conducted via a bifurcation analysis of corresponding ODE problems within the software XPPAUT. In this paper, we provide an introductory XPPAUT tutorial, through which we begin to expose the range of intricate patterns that the Gray–Scott model emits

A Study of Figurative Language Found in Demi Lovato’s Selected Songs

Figurative language is one of style of language or figure of speech a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the word. Figurative language is very common in poetry. This is very useful to writer because it can make their language more beautiful to listen. Figurative convey shades of meaning that can’t be expressed exactly any other way. Therefore, author decided to choose “A Study of Figurative Language in Demi Lovato’s Selected Songs” as the title for the study. Author will describe about figurative and the meaning for the lyrics that contain figurative. The method that the author used in this paper is qualitative-library research where the author collects some book that relevant with this topic. In this paper, author will focus on four types of figurative which are simile, metaphor, hyperbole and, personification. The aim was to know the figurative language used in Demi Lovato’s songs and to portray the meanings found in the lyrics. Therefore, the author welcomes any critics and suggestions that make this paper better. Kertas Karya Diplom

Modeling nonlinear propagation of ultrasound through inhomogeneous biomedical media

    No full text
The design and optimization of medical ultrasound modalities require a method for modeling the propagation of pressure wave fields through biomedical tissue. This method needs to be capable of modeling various phenomena, e.g. nonlinear propagation, attenuation, and scattering caused by arbitrary inhomogeneities in the acoustic properties of the medium. The Iterative Nonlinear Contrast Source (INCS) method is a full wave method which makes use of a contrast source approach to model nonlinear propagation of ultrasound. Originally, the method was used to model nonlinear propagation in homogeneous nonlinear media with frequency power law attenuation. In this thesis, the basic steps of INCS are conserved and the method is extended to deal with spatially varying attenuation, coefficient of nonlinearity and speed of sound. The method developed uses a generalized form of the Westervelt equation which includes a spatially dependent coefficient of nonlinearity, speed of sound and relaxation function. The generalized Westervelt equation is recast into an integral equation and solved using three different iterative schemes: Neumann, Bi-CGSTAB and Steepest Descent. The performances of these schemes are analyzed and compared. Furthermore, as an example of a possible application of the method developed, a feasibility study of a new beam forming technique, i.e. parallel transmit beam forming using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing applied to harmonic imaging, is performed. Numerical studies show the capability of this technique to reduce the presence of unwanted side-lobes and meanwhile increase the amplitude of the main beam as compared to standard parallel beam forming in reception. These improvements are expected to positively influence the signal to noise ratio and the achievable penetration depth of a given imaging system. A drawback of the technique proposed is a reduction of the axial resolution due to utilization of pulses with a narrower bandwidth. Finally, measurements in water are performed which confirmed the feasibility of the technique proposed for a practical transducer.Imaging Science & TechnologyApplied Science

Generalized Variational Inequalities for Upper Hemicontinuous and Demi Operators with Applications to Fixed Point Theorems in Hilbert Spaces

    No full text
∗ The final version of this paper was sent to the editor when the author was supported by an ARC Small Grant of Dr. E. Tarafdar.Existence theorems of generalized variational inequalities and generalized complementarity problems are obtained in topological vector spaces for demi operators which are upper hemicontinuous along line segments in a convex set X. Fixed point theorems are also given in Hilbert spaces for set-valued operators T which are upper hemicontinuous along line segments in X such that I − T are demi operators
