Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Asymptotic hitting probabilities for small circles
This diploma thesis discusses Brownian Motion. What is the probability that it hits a circle surrounding the origin? Introducing higher dimensions, the problem shifts into hitting a sphere centered in the origin. The key in answering this question is the Laplace-Gegenbauer-Transformation. This transformation uniquely determines the joint distribution of the hitting time and the hitting position. With those results we can calculate an approximation of the hitting time for vanishing radius of the sphere. Before calculating the Laplace-Gegenbauer-Transformation, we need to acquire some basic knowledge of the Besselfunctions, which are special functions with frequent use in physics. Based on these we are able to describe the so called Besselfunctions of purely imaginary argument and state their central properties. Moreover, we will become familiar with the Gegenbauer-polynomials, a family of orthogonal polynomials. These polynomials belong to the Jacobi-polynomials and are connected with the Chebyshev-polynomials. Subsequently, we will illustrate the insights of preceding sections by simulations. In this chapter we explain how to implement paths of a one-dimensional Brownian Motion and how to generalize this into higher dimensions. Then we will simulate the hitting probability of the previous section in two dimensions for different values of radius, drift and starting vector and compare these results with the true ones. Furthermore, we construct a controller for the y-component, which provides a kind of gravitation for the x-axis. At the end of the chapter we consider the order of convergence of the arising process. The last chapter deals with the Cramér-Lundberg-Model. We will develop basic knowledge about the model and will state central results such as change of measure and the Lundberg-equation. Furthermore, we approximate the probability of ruin by a diffusion
This paper is concerned with the application and numerical implementation of the policy iteration method to a two-dimensional stochastic control model with two independent Brownian motions describing the behavior of two firms in a market, as presented in the article by McKean and Shepp [18]. In the article it was shown that the chosen strategy by which the companies are supported by the government in the form of tax breaks varies depending on the optimization criterion. It turns out that if the objective is to maximize the joint survival probability of both firms, the push-bottom strategy, i.e., the strategy that supports the weaker firm at the considered time, is the optimal strategy. If, on the other hand, the criterion is to maximize the expected number of firms that remain solvent, the application of the push-top strategy is partially more suitable than the push-bottom strategy. Now the question arises whether the optimal strategy for the respective optimization problem can be found even if the companies are subsidized by the government at the beginning according to an arbitrary strategy. Since the underlying partial differential equation for the value function is nonlinear, standard methods for linear partial differential equations cannot be used. For this reason, we use the policy iteration method, in which an improved policy is derived at each step and the solution of the thereby observed linear partial differential equation is approximated using difference quotients and the successive over-relaxation method
Calculation of ruin probabilities using the Fourier transform
The probability of ruin can be represented in theory as infinite sums of convolutions. However, calculating the convolutions of random variables is generally very difficult and is associated with high complexity. This means that in most cases it is not possible to calculate the probability of ruin exactly. Therefore, approximation methods are often used to obtain approximations for the probability of theoretical ruin. The goal of this work is to present and test the Fourier-Cosine method for probability of ruin, developed by Chau, Yam and Yang. This method has the advantage that the probability of ruin can be approximated with less effort and that a margin of error can be given for this approximation. Under certain conditions, this margin of error can even be improved. In the first chapter of this diploma thesis, the most important mathematical basics of ruin theory are summarized. In the second chapter, Lévy processes are defined and some properties of these processes are examined in more detail. The third chapter deals with the Fourier transform, which is needed for the Fourier-Cosine method described in the fourth chapter. The error estimate of the approximation and the improvement of this margin of error are carried out in the fifth and sixth chapters. In chapter 7, the Fourier-Cosine method is extended to also approximate the case of a statistical distribution function. Chapter 8 introduces a method to ensure monotonicity in the approximation function depending on the initial capital. Finally, in chapter 9, the Fourier-Cosine method is tested using a Cramér-Lundberg process with exponentially distributed individual losses, a risk process with a Poisson-distributed loss process and a Cramér-Lundberg process with Gamma distributed individual losses
