    Lim-inf convergence and its compactness

    No full text
Abstract- We describe the Mizar formalization of the proof of compactness of lim-inf convergence given in [W33] according to [CCL]. Lim-inf convergence formalized in [W28] is a Moore-Smith convergence investigated in [Y6] and involves the concept of nets. The proof is based on the equivalence of two approaches to convergence in topological spaces: filter convergence and Moore-Smith (net) convergence. The equivalence is worked out in [Y19] and different characterizations of compactness are also given there. These efforts are a continuation of the international project of formalizing the theory of continuous lattices headed by the first author

Bayesian-Optimized Riblet Surface Design for Turbulent Drag Reduction via Design-by-Morphing with Large Eddy Simulation

    No full text
Abstract: A computational approach is presented for optimizing new riblet surface designs in turbulent channel flow for drag reduction, utilizing Design-by-Morphing (DbM), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), and Bayesian Optimization (BO). The design space is generated using DbM to include a variety of novel riblet surface designs, which are then evaluated using LES to determine their drag-reducing capabilities. The riblet surface geometry and configuration are optimized for maximum drag reduction using the mixed-variable Bayesian optimization (MixMOBO) algorithm. A total of 125 optimization epochs are carried out, resulting in the identification of 3 optimal riblet surface designs that are comparable to or better than the reference drag reduction rate of 8 %. The Bayesian-optimized designs commonly suggest riblet sizes of around 15 wall units, relatively large spacing compared to conventional designs, and spiky tips with notches for the riblets. Our overall optimization process is conducted within a reasonable physical time frame with up to 12-core parallel computing and can be practical for fluid engineering optimization problems that require high-fidelity of computational design before materialization

Effects of rapid calcination on properties of calcium-based sorbents

    No full text
The calcination process may influence subsequent fragmentation, sintering and swelling when CaO derived from limestone acts as a CO(2) or SO(2)-sorbent in combustion, gasification and reforming. Sorbent properties are affected by CO(2) partial pressure, total pressure, temperature, heating rate, impurities and sample size. In this study, the effect of calcination heating rate was investigated based on an electrically heated platinum foil. The effects of heating rate (up to 800 degrees C/s), calcination temperature (700-950 degrees C), particle size (90-180 mu m) and sweep gas velocity were investigated. Higher initial heating rates led to lower extents of limestone calcination, but the extents of carbonation of the resulting CaO were similar to each other. Calcium utilization declined markedly during carbonation or sulphation of CaO after calcination by rapid heating. Experimental results show that carbonation and calcium utilization were most effective for carbonation temperatures between 503 and 607 degrees C. Increasing the extent of calcination is not the best way to improve overall calcium utilization due to the vast increase in energy consumption. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

“Survival – to keep writing”: An interview with Shirley Geok-lin Lim

    No full text
In this e-mail interview conducted in 2016, author and scholar Shirley Geok-lin Lim addresses the changing social and political conditions in the United States. Lim discusses the affective relationship between aesthetics and politics in her work, the anxiety of multilingual stylistics, and the in-between nature of the transnation. She also reflects on the academic marginalization she has experienced as a result of her immigrant designation and subjectivity, as well as the indirect influence of China and Chineseness on her writing. Commenting on her memoir Among the White Moon Faces, Lim notes the difficulty of titling, and addresses the impact of anglophone literature upon her during her colonial Malaysian upbringing
