Agrarian Structure and Economic Development in Works of Władysław Grabski
The article is devoted to analysis of Wł. Grabski's (one of the leading Polish
interwar economists) opinions concerning the most favourable agrarian structure.
Taking into account the fact that Poland's economy in the interwar period possessed
distinct characteristics of economic backwardness, the evaluation of "optimal" —
according to Grabski — agrarian structure is performed from the viewpoint of a start
to accelerated economic devełopment.
In this article the author was trying to provide an answer to the question to
what degree the agrarian structure as proposed by Wł. Grabski was conforming to
postulates posed before agriculture by contemporary theories of development of
a backward economy.
The final conclusion is that although the ideał agrarian structure as proposed
by Grabski could be reconciled with present-day general theses of the development
theory its essential shortcoming, in relation to conditions prevailing in the then
Polish village, was the fact that it made no provisions for the agrarian overpopulation
of the Polish village.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 zostało dofinansowane ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę
Factors Determining Evolution of Agrarian Structure in Władysław Grabski 's Works
The article deals with analys is of W. Grabski's views on
the evolution of the agrarian structure (Grabski was one of the
leading agricultural economists in the inter-war period in Poland), Grabski was consistently supporting the superiority of
the small peasant economy over the large landed properties. This
superiority, in his opinion, was being reflected in the deconcentration of the agrarian structure. In the particular parts of the
article the author discusses the factors determining the shape
of the agrarian structure - changes in production relatione, level of effectiveness of land utilization in different types of farms, technical progress, and economic fluctuations. While analyzing Grabski's views on the deconcentration in the agriculture, the author focusses a great deal of his attention on the rationality of Grabski's propositions from the viewpoint of developmental needs of the inter-war agriculture. And even though Grabski did not perceive that “durability" of the peasant
economy was an effect of the economic backwardness rather than - as he thought - the effect of development of the capitalism,
there should, nonetheless, be underlined the rationality of his
views in a concrete economic situation prevailing in the then
Poland. The views of W. Grabski concerning the evolution of the
agrarian structure are not contra dictory to postulates of mobilization of the productive factors by the agriculture in developing states as put forward by the present-day theories of the economic growth.Zadanie pt.

Poglądy ekonomiczne Grabskiego (zwłaszcza związane z relacją rynek–państwo, czynnikami kreującymi dochód narodowy, podatkami, budżetem i pieniądzem) są w większości nadal aktualne, więc warto je zaprezentować dzisiaj, w naszej skomplikowanej rzeczywistości gospodarczej.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Economic Governance after the Great Economic Crisis in the Concept of Stanisław Grabski
Stanisław Grabski, Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Law at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów, rejected the idea that the great economic crisis (1929–1933) would lead to the collapse of capitalism. He advocated the development of the economy in stages, recognizing changes in societal needs and the emergence of a new technique for a boost to development, granted by the State and governed by the primacy of the economy. He distinguished three groups of socio-economic regimes, using as a criterion for the award a way for economic cooperation of the people. In the third group, including capitalism, the units have carried out activities on the basis of equality and freedom, subject to the rules of law. Capitalism in its two phases of development and was heading to the third, which was formed after the great economic crisis. Despite the passage of years it has kept its basic values and principles and still motivates individuals
to be active. Therefore, Grabski found the system of capitalism dynamic and flexible, able to survive the economic crisis of 1929, and further develop. He argued that after the crisis there will be a new order, in which the economy will function according to the following models: the democratic-liberal, corporative-fascist, the economy dominated by large corporations and with a very limited role for the State of the economy based on trade-offs of monopolies and trade unions and statist model. Grabski did not rule out a communist economy. Among the most liberal democratic models with a sizeable small business sector, France, whose economy effectively defended itself against crisis. Although the global economy was already dominated by monopolies, Grabski advocated the use of this model in [email protected] WrocławskiGrabski S., Ekonomia społeczna, t. 1–10 (oddzielnie zatytułowane), Lwów 1927–1933.Grabski S., Ustroje społeczno-gospodarcze, t. 8, Lwów 1929.Grabski, S., Współczesny kapitalizm, t. 9, Lwów 1930.Grabski S., Dążenia rozwojowe współczesnego kapitalizmu, t. 10, Lwów 1933.Czapliński W., Galos A., Korta W., Historia Niemiec, Wrocław 1981.Polski słownik biograficzny, t. Stanisław Grabski as a Socio-Political Theoretician
Stanisław Grabski as a philosopher, economist and politician was able to form a synthesis of these branches wherein human affairs and welfare of society in given political and economic circumstances were deemed most important. It follows from an analysis of Grabski's works that he has outlined an "economic theory of society" with an individualistic and socializing propriety.
Analyzing social-economic occurrences and processes he used real-historic and systematic methods, he clearly understood the great complexity of social life, notified cumulation of political, economic und cultural occurrences, that form and then influence development or regress of social system occuring one after another.
Grabski cricitized and warned of introducing socialistic model of sovietic economy in Poland, proving whenever he could its incapacity, low quality and regressive character. At the same time, he indicated necessity of practice of improving capitalistic economy. Great part in his social-economic idea took, strongly set forth by Church rule of nation help. Appreciating the necessity of a mutual complementarity of the free market − verified way determining dynamics of production and inventing, and active nation − which, in case of any problems stimulate economy and protect the weak-created, I believe, frameworks of social market economy
