    A comparative clinical study of Khanda Shunthi and Prasarni Avaleha in the Management of Ama Vata w.s.r. to Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease characterized by swollen, painful and stiff joints. Amavata is a disease of Madhyama Roga Marga as it affects Sandhis and Haridaya Marma. Though Ama and Vata are the predominant pathogenic factors but the disease represents Tridoshic vitiation. The affliction of Sandhis by Vata dosha in association with Ama reflects the equal role of both Dosha and Dushya in the causation of disease. Moreover, the chief pathogenic factors, being contradictory in nature possess difficulty in planning the line of treatment. The objectives of this randomized parallel group comparative study were to evaluate the effect of Khanda Shunthi and Prasarni Avaleha in the management of Amavata. This Study was conducted on 40 patients selected randomly from OPD and IPD of Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic Hospital and divided into 2 trial groups A and B having 20 patients in each group. Group A received Khanda Shunthi 10 gms BD and Group B received Prasarni Avaleha 10 gms BD with lukewarm water for 60 days. Results showed statistically significant difference in effect of Group A and Group B on, Pain, Swelling, Stiffness, ESR, Walking time and Grip Strength except on Fever and HB. Percent wise Khanda Shunthi is found to be more effective than Prasarni Avaleha for all assessment criteria in the management of Amavata

    Anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant activities of Devdarvadyarishta in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats

    68-75Devdarvadyarishta is a honey based medicated alcoholic formulation that has been documented to elicit hypoglycemic activity in Ayurvedic lexicon. The aim of this present study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant effect of Devdarvadyarishta in STZ induced type II diabetic rats. 24 Wistar albino rats were distributed into four groups with six animals in each group viz., Group I (Normal Control Group), Group II (Diabetic control group), group III (Standard drug Glibenclamide at 10 mg/kg of body weight), group IV (Devdarvadyarishta at 2000 mg/kg of body weight). Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ at dose level of 35 mg/kg. The whole study was conducted for 30 days. Changes in parameters like body weight, blood glucose, blood urea, serum cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, insulin, alkaline phosphatase, oral glucose tolerance test and liver anti-oxidant parameters viz., superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione were recorded. Histopathology of liver and pancreas was also done. Result showed significant improvement in parameters like body weight, lipid profile, blood glucose, serum creatinine, insulin and alkaline phosphatase which were almost analogous to potent antidiabetic drug glibenclamide. Histopathological studies reinforce the healing of pancreas by increase in pancreatic islet numbers and size, amelioration in atrophy, well-rejuvenated normal cellular arrangement and reduced necrosis with normal blood vessels in liver by test drug as a possible mechanism of its antidiabetic and anti-oxidant activity our study suggests that Devdarvadyarishta suppresses the symptoms of diabetes and diabetes related oxidative stress in animal study

    Efficacy of Nyagrodh Twak Lepa in Honey bee sting: In-vivo study

    Introduction- As Acharya Charaka has explained the local application of Kshirivruksha Twak to cure all types of keeta visha, hence Nyagrodh (Ficus benghalensis L.) Twak Lepa with water as base is selected as Trial drug on Apis Cerana Indica bee sting poisoning. Material and Methods- An in-vivo study on albino mice to know the efficacy of trial drug has been planned after animal ethical clearance. 18 albino mice were prorated into three groups with 6 animals in each group viz. Control group, Trial drug (Nyagrodh Twak Lepa Churna) group and Standard drug (Beclomethasone Dipropionate 0.025% w/w) group. 6 stings were given to each mice and 3 stings were removed after sting operation. All mice were observed for allergic reactions viz. erythema, scaling, fissures, oedema and mortality for a period of 7 days. Histo-pathological changes were also noted after completion of study. Statistical analysis was done using Paired t test. Results- Results revealed that Trial drug had worked more efficiently on Erythema and Oedema while Standard drug worked more efficiently on Scaling and Fissure. Histo-pathology showed that wound healed with Nyagrodh twak lepa and Standard drug have shown almost similar changes while wound in control group showed extensive areas of necrosis. Conclusion- Present study suggests that both Nyagrodh and Beclomethasone can be used in Honey bee sting poisoning but as Nyagrodh being a religious tree can be easily identified by a common man, it can be employed as preliminary treatment for the same before reaching hospital.

    In vivo study of Rasa Bhasma on CCL4 induced Hepato-toxicity in Albino rats

    India stands 27th in rank with 25.8% of death rate due to Liver diseases in 2016. In spite of scientific advancement in the field of Hepatology, Bio-medical science is clueless in finding out an effective drug against Hepatic Disorders. Detailed description on liver disorders and their management are given by all the three prominent Acharyas of Ayurveda. Rasa Bhasma is one such preparation that can be used to treat Hepatic Disorders. In present work an attempt has been made to evaluate the efficacy of Rasa Bhasma in the management of liver disorders. 24 animals were allocated into 4 groups having six animals in each group namely Group I (Normal/Control), Group II (Intoxicated Control) Toxicated Group, Group III (lower dose of Rasa Bhasma) and Group IV (Higher dose of Rasa Bhasma). All the four group were assessed for various biochemical Parameters viz. Alkaline phosphatase, SGOT (Serum glutamate oxalacetate transaminase)/AST, SGPT (Serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase)/ALT, Total Bilirubin, Direct Bilirubin and Total Proteins. Finally, the animals from all the four groups were sacrificed for Histo-pathological studies. The results were expressed as mean ± SE and One way ANOVA by using statistical software SPSS version 16.0. Results revealed that the values of Group 4 are closer to the Normal Group1 than Group 3 meaning Rasa Bhasma in Higher dose is more effective than that in lower dose. Therefore, it can be concluded that Rasa Bhasma is a potent Herbo-mineral formulation for protection of hepatic cells

    Pharmaceutical Standardisation of Lakshadi Guggulu Vati and Tablet w.s.r to the Method of Preparation

    Introduction: Standard operating procedure for pharmaceutical preparation of Lakshadi Guggulu Vati and Tablet has been developed in the present research work to compare the traditional method of Tablet preparation with the modern pharmaceutical procedure. Material and Methods: Three samples each of classical Lakshadi Guggulu vati were prepared as per Vrindmadhav and A.F.I to develop Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the drug. Also three samples each of Lakshadi Guggulu tablet by wet granulation method according to the same references were prepared for comparison of the pharmaceutical procedures. For the purification process of Guggulu 1:4 ratio of crude Guggulu and purification media (Triphala Kwatha) was taken. Observation and Result: Mean % yield of Lakshadi Guggulu Vati and Tablet as per the references of Vrindmadhav and A.F.I. were found to be 87.28%, 92.92% and 90.26%, 95.88% respectively. 700g of Guggulu Shodhana by Parisravana requires 3-4 hrs duration with an average yield of 62-66 %. In the preparation of drug by classical pharmaceutical procedure 10-12% loss was observed while preparing drug by modern pharmaceutical procedure 4-8% loss was observed irrespective of references taken for the process. Conclusion- Pharmaceutically it is better to prepare tablet instead of Vati, as the percentage loss in Vati preparation was high which in turn elevates the cost of medicine.

    Pharmaceutical Standardisation of Devdarvadyarishta w.s.r to the Fermenting Vessel

    Standard operating procedure for pharmaceutical preparation of Devdarvadyarishta has been developed in the present research work. A pilot scale study having 3 batches was carried out initially to find out the best possible fermenting vessel among glass jar, porcelain jar and stainless steel vessel and also to investigate for any possible hurdle related with fermentation process as honey and not jaggery is used as sweetening agent in this formulation. Three samples of Devdarvadyarishta as per conventional method were prepared in accordance with Bhaishjya Ratnavali and process for standard of Devdarvadyarishta was set in as a Quality specification for the same. Porcelain jar was found to be the best as per the results of pilot study as evident by alcohol content of 5.73%, 6.25% and 6.10% respectively in glass jar, porcelain jar and stainless steel vessel, the reaction being completed in between 38-47 days.  Approximate duration of Kwatha formation in all the batches was 9 hours with peak temperature during boiling being maintained at 920C. In all the three batches, fermentation started on 7th day, 7th day and 9th day, total duration of fermentation was 72 days, 70 days and 75 days, with % loss of 15.78%, 17.76% and 19.07% respectively. Mean % loss observed during preparation was 17.53%

    SEM-EDAX and ICP-OES analysis of Rasa Bhasma along with its Physico-chemical characterization

    Abstract- Rasa Bhasma is a Herbo-Mineral preparation mentioned by Shri Anantadeva Soori in his textbook Rasa Chintamani in the context of Parada Marana. Owing to its Hepato-protective indication, it was prepared as per the conventional method and was subjected to various physico-chemical parameters, assessment of inorganic elements, SEM EDAX and ICP-OES for the determination of Mercury. Results revealed that Rasa Bhasma was tasteless, grey coloured smooth powder having alkaline nature insoluble in water and alcohol but sparingly soluble in Chloroform with values total ash- 88.10%, acid insoluble ash- 83.03%, loss on drying-0.675%. Amongst inorganic elements, sodium, chlorides and sulphates were found to be present in the Bhasma. SEM/EDAX spectra show the results of Mercury, Sulphur, Carbon, Oxygen, in various spectrums. The % of Mercury is maximum i.e., between 65-75% each. Sulphur varies from 25-30%. Carbon is rich in quantity varying from 25-30%. In all the Spectrums, Mercury is associated with Sulphur, forming a major peak and small Mercurial peaks are also seen along with small peaks of carbon. 98.3% mg/kg Mercury was found to be present in the Rasa Bhasma by ICP-OES analysis. Physico- chemical parameters of Rasa Bhasma were found to be within normal limits concluding that the prepared Rasa Bhasma was of standard quality.
