    Evaluation of roasting effect on selected green tea volatile flavor compound and pyrazine content by hs-spme gc-ms

    The present study aims at the development and validation of a quali-quantitative headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME GC-MS) method for the analysis of odorants in different Chinese and Japanese green teas. A 65 μm PDMS/DVB fiber was used, and GC-MS was performed on a ZB-5 (30 m × 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 μm film) column. The main odorants in green tea samples were identified and the method was fully validated. Linearity (r2 0.981–0.999), sensitivity (LOQ 0.005–0.04 μg/mL), reproducibility (CV% 3.12–10.37), accuracy (recovery% 79.08–99.17) and matrix effect (ME% −9.5 to +4.5) were determined. Quantitation of 2,4-heptadienal, β-damascenone, β-ionone, linalool, indole, 2-ethyl-6-methyl-pyrazine, 2-ethyl-5-methyl-pyrazine, 2-ethyl-3,6-dimethylpirazine, 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethyl-pyrazine and 2-acetyl-pyrazine was carried out in the presence of isotopically labeled compounds as the internal standards. The proposed method was applied to the comparison of the profile of the volatile flavor compounds (VFCs) of green tea subjected to roasting treatment at three different temperatures (160, 180 and 200◦C for 30 min). In particular, the roasting process was monitored by following the quantitative variations of the selected odorant content, considered as the most important contributory components to the Hojicha or black tea (roasted tea) flavor.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Quantitative amino acids profile of monofloral bee pollens by microwave hydrolysis and fluorimetric high performance liquid chromatography

    Bee pollen is an attractive resource in the field of alternative remedies and thanks to the content of carbohydrates, crude fibers, proteins and lipids must be considered as a supplementary food of high potential rate. In characterization of bee pollen with the aim to define its value in human nutrition, the amino acids profile is one of the most important attributes. In the present study, the determination of amino acids composition of different monofloral bee pollen samples was obtained by an approach combining microwave acidic hydrolysis (60 min at 150 °C instead of 22 h at 120 °C in conventional oven) followed by derivatization using 9-fluorenylmethylchloroformate (FMOC-Cl) and separation of amino acids derivatives using a Phenomenex Kinetex core-shell 5 μm C18 (150 x 4.6 mm i.d.) column under a ternary gradient elution. Separation of 19 amino acids was achieved in about 40 min and fluorimetric detection (λexc = 265 nm λem = 315 nm) allowed selective and sensitive quantitation with LOQ values ranging within 0.14–3.00 μg/mL. Interestingly, the present approach allowed determination of some amino acids e.g., tryptophan and trans-4-hydroxyproline that are often lost by other methods of analysis. Significant differences in the composition of the considered samples were found confirming the impact of botanical origin of the product on its nutritional value. Principal Component Analysis was applied to treat the obtained data, highlighting the importance for discrimination, of detecting low abundance amino acids. The proposed method can be used as an advantageous alternative to the existing ones for characterization of bee pollen as an important source of dietary proteins

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Laser-Based Primary Thermometry: A Review

    Laser-based primary thermometry was initiated almost 15 years ago by the proposal to determine the absolute temperature of a gas at thermodynamic equilibrium through the Doppler width of an associated absorption transition, exploiting the potentially very accurate measurement of an optical frequency to infer the elusive thermal energy of a molecular or atomic absorber. This approach, commonly referred to as Doppler broadening thermometry, has benefited across the years from substantial improvements, of both technical and fundamental nature, eventually reaching an accuracy of about 10 ppm on the temperature determination in the best cases. This is sufficient for Doppler broadening thermometry to play a significant role in the practical realization of the new kelvin, which follows the 2019’s redefinition from a fixed value of the Boltzmann constant, and to tackle the challenge, among others, to quantify and possibly fix systematic uncertainties of the international temperature scale of 1990. This paper reviews and comparatively analyzes methods and results achieved so far in the field of laser-based primary thermometry, also including spectroscopic approaches that leverage the temperature-dependent distribution of line intensities and related absorbances across the rovibrational band of a molecular sample. Although at an early stage of development, these approaches show a promising degree of robustness with respect to the choice of the line-shape model adopted for the fitting of the absorption spectra, which is a delicate aspect for all laser-based thermometers. We conclude by identifying possible technical and scientific evolution axes of the current scenario
