On the integrability of the sine-Gordon system
No full textThis thesis investigates the integrability of the sine-Gordon system of nonlinear partial differential equations when the dependent variables are subject to some very particular boundary conditions. In chapter 1 the sine-Gordon system is introduced and, with N ϵ Z, P, Q ϵ R, the sets of initial-boundary value problems A(_N) and B(_P,Q) are defined. In the set A(_N) at the spatial variable x is unbounded and the boundary conditions are fixed by initially choosing the topological charge N. This set of problems is the one usually associated with the sine-Gordon system. In the set B(_P,Q) the spatial coordinate is constrained to the semi-line (-oo,0) and there exists two boundary parameters P,Q ϵ R to be chosen a priori. It is the study of this second set of initial-boundary value problems for arbitrary P, Q which forms all the original work of this dissertation. The study presented here is primarily concerned with the development of three separate inverse scattering methods for solving these sets of initial-boundary value problems. The first of these is developed in chapter 3 and is applicable to a subset of the problems in A(_N). The method is the one usually associated with the sine-Gordon system and studies the asymptotics of the initial data as x → ±oo. It is included in this thesis for completeness and as background for the original material which follows. Next, in chapters 4 and 5, the inverse scattering methods appropriate to initial-boundary value problems in subsets of B(_P,O) and B(_P,Q#O) are constructed. In these cases it is important to realise that it is only possible to study the asymptotics of the initial data as x → -oo. Once these three methods have been formulated they are used to find soliton solutions and infinite sets of integrals of motion for these boundary value problems. When a boundary is present at x = 0 the interaction of the solitons with this boundary is studied. These topics are addressed in chapter 6. Finally in chapter 7 the question of the integrability of both sets of problems is addressed. By interpreting the various inverse scattering methods in terms of canonical coordinate transformations of phase space it is seen that the existence of such methods can be viewed as a constructive proof of the integrability of these boundary value problems

No full textفي كتابات الجاحظ، تناول أديب العرب الجاحظ قضايا الموسيقى والطرب والغناء. كان الجاحظ معروفًا بعلمه وأدبه، وكتب العديد من الأعمال التي تسلط الضوء على جوانب الحياة المترفة في المجتمع. كتب كتابًا بعنوان "أخلاق المغنين" وآخر بعنوان "المغنين والغناء والصنعة". في هذه الكتب، دافع الجاحظ عن الغناء كفن فني، ورأى أنه يمتلك قواعد وأسسًا علمية تشابه مع غيره من الفنون والآداب. كان يروج للغناء باعتباره متعة فنية. وعلى الرغم من انتمائه للمعتزلة، إلا أن الجاحظ كان مشجعًا للغناء ومغنين، وكتب عن أخلاقهم وفنونهم. وفي رسالته "القيان"، تناول الجاحظ تأثير بيوت القيان والقيان نفسهن في المجتمع الإسلامي، حيث أشار إلى الفسق والعشق والفجور الذي قد ينتج عن هذا التأثير. بشكل عام، تركت كتابات الجاحظ أثرًا مهمًا في فهمنا لثقافة الموسيقى والطرب والغناء في العصور القديمة.In his writings, the Arab author Al-Jahiz addressed issues related to music, Tarab (a genre of music), and singing. Al-Jahiz was known for his knowledge and literature, and he wrote numerous works that shed light on the luxurious aspects of society. He authored a book titled "Ethics of Singers" and another titled "Singers, Singing, and the Craft." In these books, Al-Jahiz defended singing as an artistic form and believed that it possessed scientific principles and foundations similar to other arts and literature. He promoted singing as a pleasurable art form. Despite his affiliation with the Mu\u27tazila school of thought, Al-Jahiz was a supporter of singing and singers, and he wrote about their ethics and arts. In his treatise "Al-Qiyan," Al-Jahiz discussed the influence of courtesans and their households on Islamic society, pointing to the immorality, passion, and vice that may result from this influence. Overall, Al-Jahiz\u27s writings have had a significant impact on our understanding of music, Tarab, and singing in ancient times
On the Prophecy of Antarctic Ecological Crisis in The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym
No full textThe theme of Antarctic exploration is one of the prominent subjects in American author Edgar Allan Poe’s novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. This theme did not arise by chance but is closely connected to the social environment of Poe’s era and country. This paper aims to provide an ecological interpretation of the Antarctic exploration episodes in the novel, particularly focusing on Poe’s foresight regarding the ecological crisis in Antarctica. First, through textual analysis, this paper reveals Poe’s profound description of Antarctica, showcasing his keen insight into the natural environment and human behavior, as well as his deep understanding of society and history as a writer. Second, this paper will explore the history of American Antarctic exploration and, using this background, discuss in detail how Poe’s work unveils America’s desire for Antarctic resources and the potential ecological crises such desire might bring. Furthermore, the paper will analyze Poe’s depiction of Antarctic explorers and his reasons for focusing his creative vision on Antarctica in the 1830s. Lastly, the paper will examine the implications of Poe’s ecological awareness to inspire contemporary society’s reflection on environmental protection
Quantum corrections to the classical reflection factor of the sinh-Gordon model
No full textThis thesis studies the quantum reflection factor of the sinh-Gordon model under boundary conditions consistent with integrability. First, we review the affine Toda field theory in Chapter One. In particular, the classical and quantum integrability of the theory are reviewed on the whole line and on the half-line as well, that is, in the presence of a boundary. We next consider the sinh-Gordon model which is restricted to a half-line by boundary conditions maintaining integrability in Chapter Two. A perturbative calculation of the reflection factor is given to one loop order in the bulk coupling and to first order in the difference of the two parameters introduced at the boundary. The result provides a further verification of Ghoshal's formula. The calculation is consistent with a conjecture for the general dependence of the reflection factor on the boundary parameters and the bulk coupling. In Chapter Three, quantum corrections to the classical reflection factor of the sinh-Gordon model are studied up to second order in the difference of boundary data and to one loop order in the bulk coupling. Chapter Four deals with the quantum reflection factor for the sinh-Gordon model with general boundary conditions. The model is studied under boundary conditions which are compatible with integrability and in the framework of the conventional perturbation theory generalised to the affine Toda field theory. It is found that the general form of a subset of the related quantum corrections are hypergeometric functions. Finally, we sum up this thesis in Chapter Five along with some conclusions and suggestions for further future studies
