    Children's opinions on effective strategies to cope with bullying: the importance of bullying role and perspective

    In order to find out what children would suggest as useful interventions to stop bullying, we designed a questionnaire administered to 311 children (155 boys and 156 girls; mean age = 11 years). Thirty-six items were employed to ask children how effective, in their opinion, retaliation, nonchalance and assertiveness could be in stopping bullying. Items were presented to children from three different perspectives (imagine you are the victim, the bully or a witness). We used peer reports to assess children's role in bullying. Children were grouped into bullies, followers of the bully, defenders of the victims, outsiders, victims and those not involved. The strategy most frequently chosen by all children was to cope with bullying through assertiveness. Bullies considered retaliation effective more often than their classmates, especially when they adopted the perspective of the victim or witness. Bullies did not consider assertive strategies as efficient in stopping the bully. Defenders, outsiders, victims and children not involved, on the other hand, were very much in favour of strategies aimed at solving the conflict through nonchalance or assertiveness, especially when they imagined being the bully. Girls chose assertive strategies more often than boys and younger children preferred nonchalance more often than older children, who tended to choose retaliation more often.     New insights on accretion in supergiant fast X-ray transients from XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations of IGR J17544-2619

    XMM–Newton observations of the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J17544?2619 are reported and placed in the context of an analysis of archival INTEGRAL/IBIS data that provide a refined estimate of the orbital period at 4.9272?±?0.0004?d. A complete outburst history across the INTEGRAL mission is reported. Although the new XMM–Newton observations (each lasting ?15 ks) targeted the peak flux in the phase-folded hard X-ray light curve of IGR J17544?2619, no bright outbursts were observed, the source spending the majority of the exposure at intermediate luminosities of the order of several 1033?erg?s?1 (0.5–10 keV) and displaying only low level flickering activity. For the final portion of the exposure, the luminosity of IGR J17544?2619 dropped to ?4?×?1032?erg?s?1 (0.5–10 keV), comparable with the lowest luminosities ever detected from this source, despite the observations being taken near to periastron. We consider the possible orbital geometry of IGR J17544?2619 and the implications for the nature of the mass transfer and accretion mechanisms for both IGR J17544?2619 and the supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) population. We conclude that accretion under the ‘quasi-spherical accretion’ model provides a good description of the behaviour of IGR J17544?2619 and suggests an additional mechanism for generating outbursts based upon the mass accumulation rate in the hot shell (atmosphere) that forms around the neutron star under the quasi-spherical formulation. Hence, we hope to aid in explaining the varied outburst behaviours observed across the SFXT population with a consistent underlying physical model

    OBJECTIVES: Patients with nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) rely more on the ankle compared with the lower back proprioception while standing, perform sit-to-stand-to-sit (STSTS) movements slower, and exhibit perceptual impairments at the lower back. However, no studies investigated whether these sensorimotor impairments relate to a reorganization of the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices (S1 and S2) and primary motor cortex (M1) during proprioceptive processing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Proprioceptive stimuli were applied at the lower back and ankle muscles during functional magnetic resonance imaging in 15 patients with NSLBP and 13 controls. The location of the activation peaks during the processing of proprioception within S1, S2, and M1 were determined and compared between groups. Proprioceptive use during postural control was evaluated, the duration to perform 5 STSTS movements was recorded, and participants completed the Fremantle Back Awareness Questionnaire (FreBAQ) to assess back-specific body perception. RESULTS: The activation peak during the processing of lower back proprioception in the right S2 was shifted laterally in the NSLBP group compared with the healthy group (P=0.007). Moreover, patients with NSLSP performed STSTS movements slower (P=0.018), and reported more perceptual impairments at the lower back (P<0.001). Finally, a significant correlation between a more lateral location of the activation peak during back proprioceptive processing and a more disturbed body perception was found across the total group (ρ=0.42, P=0.025).
