    The minimum founding population in dispersing organisms subject to strong Allee effects

    1. Dispersal can push population density below strong Allee thresholds ensuring the demise of small founding populations. As a result, for isolated populations of dispersing organisms, the minimum founding population size that enables establishment can be quite different from the Allee threshold. 2. We derive an expression for the minimum founding population size for a general integrodifference equation model of a dispersing population with a strong Allee effect. We demonstrate the utility of the general model by using it to approximate minimum founding populations for the mountain pine beetle. 3. The minimum founding population of the general model increases linearly with the mean squared displacement of the dispersing organism. Transient dynamics of the general model suggest that population density at the point of introduction will often decrease before increasing, even when the minimum founding population size is exceeded. 4. Calculation of minimum founding population sizes may prove useful for predicting invasion success based on propagule size and for maximizing the success of species reintroductions when strong Allee effects exist

    A correction for serial nonindependence in mountain pine beetle aerial survey data to reduce overestimation of cumulative damage

    At the beginning of this century, an unprecedented mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) outbreak expanded across western North America. Methods are needed to quantify its impact on forests. Although aerial survey data of infestation are readily available, their translation to tree mortality estimates is challenging because the polygons sketched by aerial surveyors to delimit infested regions often overlap from one year to the next, which produces a lack of independence in yearly estimates of infested landscape. This problem manifests when annual proportions of infested land are summed over years because the sum often exceeds one. Cumulative proportions of infested land larger than one imply overestimation of tree mortality if initial densities of available host trees are multiplied by annual proportions of infested landscape. To address this problem, we developed a probabilistic method for correcting for nonindependence in proportions of infested land recorded using overlapping polygons. We demonstrate our approach in Jasper National Park where the probabilistic correction reduces overestimation bias in regions that were infested multiple years when predictions are compared to validation data.     Physiological, ecological and environmental factors that predispose trees, stands and landscapes to infestation by tree-killing Dendroctonus beetles

    In the last century the frequency and severity of outbreaks of tree-killing Dendroctonus beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) have increased. Small-scale drivers within trees likely drive outbreak dynamics across landscapes. At a small scale, variation in carbohydrate availability within the stems of lodgepole pines (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) impacts the fungal symbionts of the mountain pine beetle (D. ponderosae Hopkins). I found that, during the growing season, carbohydrates were less available in the lower stems of pines than in their upper stems. After inoculation with a fungal symbiont of the mountain pine beetle however, trees mobilized carbohydrates to lesion fronts regardless of inoculation height along the stem. Interestingly, lesions that formed in response to fungal inoculation were larger in the lower portion of the stem than in the upper stem, likely due to due to lower initial concentrations of carbohydrates available to fund responses to fungal attack. I evaluated the consequences of common silvicultural treatments in stands attacked by bark beetles and found that small-scale interactions remained important in these systems. Fertilization reduced carbohydrate reserves in the roots of lodgepole pine trees by promoting tree growth. As trees use carbohydrate reserves to fund defensive responses, fertilized trees may therefore exhibit weakened defenses against bark beetle attack. In a separate experiment I found that fertilization increased beetle survival in bolts that overwintered in the Crowsnest Pass —an effect that was mediated by their fungal symbionts. In a landscape-scale analysis of a 30-year dataset, I found no evidence that defoliation by a lepidopteran (Choristoneura biennis Freeman) facilitates local spruce beetle (D. rufipennis Kirby) outbreaks in British Columbia. Thus, small-scale characteristics of bark beetle biology undoubtedly impact their populations whereas I was unable to confirm the importance of landscape-scale ecological interactions

    Tree defence and bark beetles in a drying world: carbon partitioning, functioning and modelling

    Drought has promoted large-scale, insect-induced tree mortality in recent years, with severe consequences for ecosystem function, atmospheric processes, sustainable resources and global biogeochemical cycles. However, the physiological linkages among drought, tree defences, and insect outbreaks are still uncertain, hindering our ability to accurately predict tree mortality under on-going climate change. Here we propose an interdisciplinary research agenda for addressing these crucial knowledge gaps. Our framework includes field manipulations, laboratory experiments, and modelling of insect and vegetation dynamics, and focuses on how drought affects interactions between conifer trees and bark beetles. We build upon existing theory and examine several key assumptions: (1) there is a trade-off in tree carbon investment between primary and secondary metabolites (e.g. growth vs defence); (2) secondary metabolites are one of the main component of tree defence against bark beetles and associated microbes; and (3) implementing conifer-bark beetle interactions in current models improves predictions of forest disturbance in a changing climate. Our framework provides guidance for addressing a major shortcoming in current implementations of large-scale vegetation models, the under-representation of insect-induced tree mortality

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
