A method for detecting the profile of an author
This paper presents a method for detecting an author’s profile using the following two elements: gender and age. This is based on a set of dialogues, written in two languages: English and Spanish, provided for Author Profiling competence within the evaluation forum "Uncovering Plagiarism, Authorship, and Social Software Misuse" (PAN2018). Counts of lexical, semantic, and syntactic characteristics are used to generate a two-phase classification system, which first classifies gender and then age. The results obtained show that, with the amount of data available, it is possible to characterize both the age and gender of an author with an accuracy greater than 50%. However, these values could be improved by having more evidence of information in the training data.Silva, JesusGarcía, SilviaBinda, María AlejandraMarin Gonzalez, FredyBarrios, RosioLeon Castro, Bellani

Surging critical care capacity for COVID-19: Key now and in the future
The COVID-19 pandemic has shocked health systems worldwide, with visible impacts on intensive care units and emergency departments. The concept of “surge capacity” should be analyzed within this context as this crisis could be seen as an opportunity to improve the knowledge base of intensive care units and emergency departments. We reflected, based on our experience from work at the frontlines, on health service planning and with epidemiological data, about the importance of surging critical care capacity for COVID, now and as lessons for the future. We summarize and relate virus clinical characteristics, epidemiological patterns and critical care surge capacity as important factors to consider for effective health systems response. Some practical aspects are described, but also the role that mathematical models can play to improve intensive care units surge capacity by considering its importance as a predictor of needs according to epidemiological patterns. Also, in the transitional phase, we consider the importance of coexisting COVID-19 and non-covid-19 health care services, and the importance of a new surge capacity for postponed activities. In this new transitional phase, also emergency departments will have to adapt their surge capacity for a rebound effect due to delayed visits from non-COVID-19 health conditions during the pandemic. Health systems and society must remain vigilant for potential resurgence of cases as measures are relaxed to restart the economy and a new normal. Emergency departments and intensive care units have to develop surge strategies to deal together with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 flow of patients

AbstractThe work presents potential improvements in electricity metering from applying an event-driven metering, or EDM, approach, instead of traditional time-based or energy-based metering. The thesis contributes a method for automatically updating the event triggers on the basis of past measurements, thereby decreasing the number of measurements that each consumer property must send. Secondly, the author introduces a series of filters that can be used for further reducing the quantity of data sent and analyses the impact of such filters’ use in reconstruction of the original signal. Finally, the impact of communication errors on the reconstruction of the signal is examined. These improvements produce greater data compression without sacrificing the quality of the signal reconstruction. The results can serve as a foundation for more efficient deployment of advanced metering infrastructure.Original papersOriginal papers are not included in the electronic version of the dissertation.Tome, M. de C., Nardelli, P. Tämä työ esittelee mahdollisia saavutettavia etuja, kun sähkön kulutuksen mittauksessa käytetään tapahtuma pohjaista mittausta (event-driven metering, EDM) verrattuna perinteiseen aikapohjaiseen tai energiapohjaiseen mittaamiseen. Väitöstyö tuottaa menetelmän, jossa automaattisesti päivitetään mittaustapahtumaliipaisut pohjautuen aiempiin mittauksiin, jolloin eri kulutuspisteiden (asiakkaiden) lähetettävien mittausten lukumäärää ja datan määrää voidaan merkittävästi vähentää. Lisäksi väitöstyössä tutkitaan tiedonsiirtovirheiden vaikutusta alkuperäisen mittaussignaalin rekonstruktioon.
Työssä osoitetaan, että ehdotetut parannukset tuottavat tehokkaan datanpakkausmenetelmän alkuperäisen mittaussignaalin laadun kärsimättä. Työn tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää entistä tehokkaampien älysähköverkkojen mittausinfrastruktuurien kehittämisessä
