    Replication Data for: COVID-19 vaccine booster dose fails to enhance immune response to Omicron variant in reinfected healthcare workers

    A prospective cohort study was designed to assess durability and level of humoral response of 678 healthcare workers fully vaccinated against COVID-19. They were categorized based on their primary vaccination regimen: two doses of mRNA-1273, BNT162b2, ChAdOx1, a combination of ChAdOx1/BNT162b2, or a single dose of ChAdOx1. Blood samples were collected at three time points: before the booster dose, 1 and 6 months after. One month after boosting significant Anti-S-RBD differences were found between previously infected and naïve volunteers, and between mRNA-1273 and BNT162b2 booster groups (20,839 vs. 14,495 U/mL, respectively, p=0.01). Considering the initial vaccine schedules, mRNA based vaccines displayed significant higher antibody production and longer persistence among, both, infected and naïve participants. After the booster dose, participants primoinfected with the Omicron variant exhibited higher antibody concentrations than those who experienced reinfection, even after 6 months of follow-up (22,545 and 9,460 U/mL, respectively). Moreover, these groups showed the most pronounced disparity in antibody titers ratios between infected and uninfected individuals, highlighting their different immunogenicity. Therefore, the booster dose failed to enhance immunity in people reinfected with the Omicron variant.     The study population (N=373) was recruited in two stages: a mid-2021 blood donor cohort (15.5% women) and a mid-2022 women cohort. Crude global seroprevalence was 61% (53.9-67.8%) pre-Delta in 2021 and 90.2% (84.7-94.2%) post-Omicron in 2022. Anti-spike (S) antibody levels significantly increased from 53.1 (31.8-131.3) U/mL in 2021 to 436.5 (219.3-950.5) U/mL in 2022 and were significantly higher above 45 years old in the 2022 population. Both platforms showed good analytic performance on DBS samples: sensitivity was 96.8% for IgG (antiN/S) (93.9-98.5%) and 96.0% (93.0-98.0%) for anti-S quantification

    Dried blood spots (DBS) offer a convenient alternative to serum/plasma for conducting serolog-ical and molecular studies on various pathogens. Sixty-four blood samples were collected by venipuncture and spotted onto Whatman™ 903 cards to evaluate the utility of DBS and the effect of the storage temperature for 4 months after sample collection to carry out serological diagno-sis. An automated chemiluminescent immunoassay was used to investigate diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis IgG levels from both DBS and plasma samples. An optimal cut-off value for DBS was calculated to improve the performance of diphtheria and tetanus serological markers in DBS, achieving high sensitivity (95% and 98%, respectively) and specificity (91.7% and 92.3%, respectively). No protection against pertussis was found in the population studied. The correla-tion observed between the plasma and the DBS processed after sample collection was high (0.967–0.970) for all antibodies studied except pertussis (0.753), both considering hematocrit be-fore sample elution or not. The correlation between DBS and plasma for diphtheria and tetanus remained strong following a 4-month delay in DBS processing at 4 °C (0.925-0.964) and -20 °C (0.924–0.966), with only a minor decrease observed for diphtheria at room temperature (0.889), while maintaining a strong correlation for tetanus (0.960). For pertussis, the correlation between DBS and plasma was drastically reduced after delaying its processing for 4 months at any tem-perature. To summarize, hematocrit does not affect the processing of DBS in the study of sero-logical markers of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. DBS stability for serological diagnosis of diphtheria and tetanus is adequate when samples are stored at −20 °C, 4 °C and even at room temperature, for a period of 4 months. Pertussis serological marker does not appear to remain stable after 4 months, even when the DBS is stored frozen at -20 °C

    From 2016 to 2018, OKAPI cohort participants aged 15-69 years were HIV tested and interviewed at baseline and at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. OKAPI analyzes the impact of HIV VCT on changes in HIV knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviors at follow-up. At baseline participants were asked about having `ever´ had sex exchanged for money and at both follow-ups the frequence of this practice was referred to `the previous 6 months´. Among 797 participants at baseline, 10% of those sexually experienced reported having ever had transactional sex (18% men and 4% women, p<0,001). At 6 and 12-month follow up, 5% and 2%, respectively. Paid sex was significantly and independently associated with being male (aOR=2.7; 95%CI=1.4-5.2), working or studying (aOR=2.8; 95%CI=1.5-5.0), daily newspaper reading (aOR=4.4; 95%CI=1.7-11.2); daily/weekly alcohol consumption (aOR=3.3; 95%CI=1.8-6.1), first sexual intercourse before age 15 years (aOR=2.3; 95%CI=1.1-5.0), multiple sexual partners (aOR=4.1; 95%CI=2.2-7.7) and extragenital sexual practices (aOR=2.4; 95%CI=1.3-4.4). A high religiosity (daily/weekly church attendance and praying) was inversely associated with paid sex (aOR=0.1; 95%CI=0.0-0.4). The high prevalence of paid sex among people attending HIV VCT in Kinshasa, associated with other sexual and consumption risk behaviors, highlights the need of including paid sex among the risk factors mentioned in HIV prevention counseling

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
