The Expected Number of Maximal Points of the Convolution of Two 2-D Distributions
The Maximal points in a set S are those that are not dominated by any other point in S. Such points arise in multiple application settings and are called by a variety of different names, e.g., maxima, Pareto optimums, skylines. Their ubiquity has inspired a large literature on the expected number of maxima in a set S of n points chosen IID from some distribution. Most such results assume that the underlying distribution is uniform over some spatial region and strongly use this uniformity in their analysis.
This research was initially motivated by the question of how this expected number changes if the input distribution is perturbed by random noise. More specifically, let B_p denote the uniform distribution from the 2-dimensional unit ball in the metric L_p. Let delta B_q denote the 2-dimensional L_q-ball, of radius delta and B_p + delta B_q be the convolution of the two distributions, i.e., a point v in B_p is reported with an error chosen from delta B_q. The question is how the expected number of maxima change as a function of delta. Although the original motivation is for small delta, the problem is well defined for any delta and our analysis treats the general case.
More specifically, we study, as a function of n,delta, the expected number of maximal points when the n points in S are chosen IID from distributions of the type B_p + delta B_q where p,q in {1,2,infty} for delta > 0 and also of the type B_infty + delta B_q where q in [1,infty) for delta > 0.
For fixed p,q we show that this function changes "smoothly" as a function of delta but that this smooth behavior sometimes transitions unexpectedly between different growth behaviors
Sink Evacuation on Trees with Dynamic Confluent Flows
Let G = (V, E) be a graph modelling a building or road network in which edges have-both travel times (lengths) and capacities associated with them. An edge’s capacity is the number of people that can enter that edge in a unit of time. In emergencies, people evacuate towards the exits. If too many people try to evacuate through the same edge, congestion builds up and slows down the evacuation.
Graphs with both lengths and capacities are known as Dynamic Flow networks. An evacuation plan for G consists of a choice of exit locations and a partition of the people at the vertices into groups, with each group evacuating to the same exit. The evacuation time of a plan is the time it takes until the last person evacuates. The k-sink evacuation problem is to provide an evacuation plan with k exit locations that minimizes the evacuation time. It is known that this problem is NP-Hard for general graphs but no polynomial time algorithm was previously known even for the case of G a tree. This paper presents an O(nk^2 log^5 n) algorithm for the k-sink evacuation problem on trees, which can also be applied to a more general class of problems

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Cardiac troponin I in asphyxiated neonates
Background: Cardiac troponins T (cTnT) and I (cTnI) are well-established markers in detecting myocardial ischemic damage in adults. Perinatal asphyxia is associated with cardiac dysfunction. Objectives: To evaluate serum concentrations of cTnI in asphyxiated neonates and to investigate whether cTnI is correlated with the traditional markers of asphyxia. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 13 asphyxiated neonates (umbilical artery pH <7.18 and either a 1-min Apgar score <4 or a 5-min Apgar score <7) and 39 controls. Data on gestation, birth weight, sex, Apgar scores, mode of delivery, umbilical pH, creatinine, serum activity of aspartate and alanine aminotransferase, and QTc interval were investigated. Results: Median (range) cTnI concentrations were significantly higher in asphyxiated neonates with respect to healthy infants: 0.36 μg/I (0.05-11 ) versus 0.04 μg/I (0.04-0.06); p < 0.01. In asphyxiated babies, no statistically significant correlations were found between concentrations of cTnI and the other markers of asphyxia. Conclusions: In asphyxiated neonates, cTnI concentrations are higher with respect to healthy infants, suggesting the presence of myocardial damage in this group of high-risk patients. cTnI does not correlate with the traditional markers of asphyxia. Processing Tomato and Potato Response to Biostimulant Application in Open Field: An Overview
Biostimulants include a wide array of microorganisms and substances that can exert beneficial effects on plant development and growth, often enhancing nutrient uptake and improving tolerance against abiotic and biotic stress. Depending on their composition and time of application, these products can influence plant physiology directly as growth regulators or indirectly through environmental condition changes in the rhizosphere, such as nutrient and water availability. This review evaluated 48 case studies from 39 papers to summarize the effects of biostimulant application on fruit and tuber yields and on the quality of processing tomato and potato in open field conditions. For potato, PGPR bacteria were the main studied biostimulant, whereas the low number of studies on processing tomato did not permit us to delineate a trend. The yield and quality were greatly influenced by cultivars and biostimulant composition, application method, period, and dose. For processing tomato, a positive effect of the biostimulant application on the marketable yield was reported in 79% of the case studies, whereas for potato, the effect was reported in only 47%. Few studies, on processing tomato and potato, also reported data for quality parameters with contrasting results. The variability of crop response to biostimulant application in open field conditions highlights the need for more comprehensive studies. Such studies should focus on diverse cultivars, deeply understand the interaction of biostimulant application with agronomic management (e.g., irrigation and fertilization), and evaluate yield and quality parameters. This approach is crucial to fully understand the potential and limitations of biostimulant applications in agriculture, particularly regarding their role in sustainable crop production
Využití sociálních médií v B2B prodeji
Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tím, jak mohou B2B obchodníci využívat sociální média v prodeji. Na základě systematické rešerše literatury, autor zjistil, že akademici, zkoumající danou problematiku, navrhují další výzkum, a to: v kterých konkrétních krocích se dají využít sociální média v prodeji (Salo, 2017). Autor se na základě toho rozhodl zjistit, jaké sociální sítě, různé technologie a pluginy se dají využít v B2B prodeji - tzv. social sellingu. Social selling se v této práci týká primárně procesu akvizice a okrajově péčí o stávající zákazníky. Autor si vybral kvalitativní průzkum pomocí 10 hloubkových polo-strukturovaných rozhovorů, aby odhalil jak, která sociální média to jsou, tak i motivaci prodejců, proč tato média používat/nepoužívat. Aby autor dodržel správnost vyhodnocení výsledků, data byla analyzována pomocí Tématické analýzy, která v této studii vykrystalizovala 2 hlavní strategické přístupy v social sellingu. Tyto přístupy (tzv. Push a Pull strategie) obsahují praktické příklady a konkrétní aktivity, které mohou prodejci využívat v každodenní praxi. Tyto výsledky jsou prezentovány s důrazem na praktičnost a jednoduchost implementace. Tvoří proto hlavní přínos autorovo výzkumu. V poslední části autor zmiňuje výzvy a manažerská doporučení, které mohou obchodníci využít v každodenním pracovním životě.This diploma thesis focuses on social media usage in B2B sales. Based on the systematic literature review conducted by the author, he has found out that recent researchers (Salo, 2017) suggest further research in the area of how and in which sales phase should various social networking sites, technologies and plugins used. To further fill this research gap, author decided to identify these social media and their usage among B2B salespeople in the so-called social selling process. The social selling process in this thesis applies mainly to acquiring new prospects and tangentially to taking care of existing clients (follow-up step). Author has chosen a qualitative research method via conducting 10 in-depth semi-structured interviews to reveal these instruments as well as motivation of a sales person on why to use social media in the selling process. The collected data was analyzed using Thematic analysis to ensure the right procedure and to identify main themes which crystalized into 2 main strategic approaches in social selling. These approaches (Push and Pull) include practical examples of concrete activities which sales people can use in their daily jobs and are presented with focus on practicality and ease of implementation. These also form the main contribution of author`s research. In the last part, author mentions challenges in social selling and recommended managerial implications for salesforce
