Molecular machines swap rings
A chemical system has been made in which two rings on an axle can switch places by allowing a smaller ring to slip through the cavity of a larger one. The advance opens up potential applications in molecular data storage.</p
A kinetic self-sorting approach to heterocircuit [3]rotaxanes
In this proof-of-concept study, an active-template coupling is used to demonstrate a novel kinetic self-sorting process. This process iteratively increases the yield of the target heterocircuit [3]rotaxane product at the expense of other threaded species
Photodegradation of Rhodamine B over Ag modified ferroelectric BaTiO3under simulated solar light: pathways and mechanism
The use of semiconductors with a ‘built in’ bias has now become of interest for a growing number of photoactive applications. Using a combination of spectroscopic techniques, gas chromatography in association with mass spectroscopy and NMR, we show that a sample of ferroelectric BaTiO3 decorated with nanostructured Ag denatures a standard dye molecule (Rhodamine B) via a photocatalytic oxidation mechanism. The photosensitized oxidation was inhibited due to band bending induced by ferroelectric polarisation. In the Ag–BaTiO3 system we find a slight hypsochromic wavelength shift during the initial stages of degradation (only 3 nm before 80% degradation percentage) and associate this shift with the cleavage of the chromophore structure which pre-empted deethylation. This shift in maximum absorption of the dye molecule did not occur until the later stages of molecule fragmentation. Our major identifiable breakdown intermediate was benzoic acid. A lack of other identifiable fragments during the breakdown of the dye is associated with retention of these fragments on the catalyst as full mineralisation of the dye liberates CO2
RoMEO Studies 6: Rights metadata for open-archiving
This is the final study in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open-archiving) which investigated the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues relating to academic author self-archiving of research papers. It reports the results of a survey of 542 academic authors showing the level of protection required for their open-access research papers. It then describes the selection of an appropriate means of expressing those rights through metadata and the resulting choice of Creative Commons licences. Finally it outlines proposals for communicating rights metadata via the Open Archives Initiative’s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)
A stimuli-responsive rotaxane-gold catalyst: regulation of activity and diastereoselectivity
A rotaxane-based Au catalyst was developed and the effect of the mechanical bond on its behavior was studied. Unlike the non-interlocked thread, the rotaxane requires a catalytically innocent cofactor, the identity of which significantly influences both the yield and diastereoselectivity of the reaction. Under optimized conditions, AuI (the catalyst), AgI (to abstract the Cl? ligand), and CuI (the cofactor) combine to produce a catalyst with excellent activity and selectivity

RoMEO Studies 5: IPR issues for OAI Data and Service Providers
This paper is the fifth in a series of studies emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open-archiving). It reports the results of two surveys of OAI Data Providers (DPs) and Service Providers (SPs) with regards to the rights issues they face. It finds that very few DPs have rights agreements with depositing authors and that there is no standard approach to the creation of rights metadata. The paper considers the rights protection afforded individual and collections of metadata records under UK Law and contrasts this with DP and SP’s views on the rights status of metadata and how they wish to protect it. The majority of DP and SPs believe that a standard way of describing both the rights status of documents and of metadata would be usefu
