"Christabel" and the politics of fragmentation

    No full text
This thesis attempts to situate Coleridge's “Christabel” as a text that exists at the intersection of 19th century Queer discourse and post-structural theory. By looking at “Christabel” as both a queer text and a fragment poem, this thesis makes the case that one type of discourse informs the other and the fragmentary nature of the poem echoes and supports analysis of “Christabel” as a queer text. It relies on the work of prominent writers on Romantic Fragment Poems as well as Derridean post-structural discourse as a theoretical model to understand Christabel's relationship with Geraldine and the fragmentary nature of the poem that obfuscates their relationship.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesby Calin Thomas Grajk

English Bards and Unknown Reviewers: a Stylometric Analysis of Thomas Moore and the Christabel Review

    No full text
Fraught relations between authors and critics are a commonplace of literary history. The particular case that we discuss in this article, a negative review of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Christabel (1816), has an additional point of interest beyond the usual mixture of amusement and resentment that surrounds a critical rebuke: the authorship of the review remains, to this day, uncertain. The purpose of this article is to investigate the possible candidacy of Thomas Moore as the author of the provocative review. It seeks to solve a puzzle of almost two hundred years, and in the process clear a valuable scholarly path in Irish Studies, Romanticism, and in our understanding of Moore's role in a prominent literary controversy of the age

Unbalancing Binaries: Re-thinking Lilith and Eve in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Christabel," Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market," and George MacDonald's "Lilith".

In the nineteenth century, religion, or rather, religious figures played an important role in determining appropriate societal roles for women. Two particular religious figurations - Lilith and Eve - began to emerge more frequently in Victorian literary works as a way to illustrate, discuss, and critique the binary formulation of the angel in the house and the fallen woman. This thesis examines three works that utilize the symbolic representations of these religious female figures in order comment on the fallen woman and angel in the house binary, as well as the place of women within the beginning, middle, and end of the nineteenth century. I argue that by incorporating the Lilith and Eve typology, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Christabel,' (1816), Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market,' (1862), and George MacDonald's Lilith (1895), exemplify and discuss the tensions surrounding the formulation of set female roles within Victorian society. Thus, it is though problematizing the rigid binaries of the angel in the house and fallen woman within these three texts that I illuminate the cracks within the dichotomy. --P. ii.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b173788

"Hotspots" and "copycats": a plea for more thoughtful language about suicide

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. The meta-analysis by Jane Pirkis and colleagues presents a useful contribution to knowledge about the effectiveness of interventions to prevent suicides in public places. I take issue not with the content of their work, but with its language. They use the term “hotspot(s)” no fewer than 30 times in their paper. For some years, this term has served to denote specific public sites that are frequently associated with acts of suicide, usually by jumping. Beloved of the media, its continued, uncritical use in scientific literature is concerning

The creation of this jewelry work with the Gomu Gomu no Mi devil fruit concept started from the writer's habit of reading the One Piece comic series, so he was interested in making jewelry with the One Piece concept. The devil fruit in the One Piece comic series by Eiichiro Oda is known as Akuma no Mi, and is one of the elements of strength in the One Piece comic series. The author is interested in on the theory and opinion of A. A. M. Meanwhile, the method for creating jewelry works is based on SP theory. Gustami (2007:329) about three stages and six steps in creating works of art. Promjena demografske strukture i porodični odnosi među migrantima iz Jugoslavije u Australiji

The author discusses the dramatical change in the age structure and other characteristics of the Yugoslav-born population after nearly 40 years of immigration to Australia. With time, ethnic Yugoslav families progress from having parents and children Yugoslav-born, to having parents Yugoslav-born and children mostly Australian-born. Yugoslavs have shown a rapid transition between the parent generation and the young adult generation (with respect to English language proficiency and age at leaving school), and a reduction between generations with respect to the some of the earlier disadvantages experienced by women. Although the Yugoslav-born population in Australia is aging, the emergence of these Australian-born children brings younger people to the ethnic group. Also of importance found out in this paper is the continuing intermarriage of Yugoslavs with other groups in Australia, leading to a mixing of the various communities. All of these changes have implications on relationships within the family and on the structure of the ethnic group.Članak se bavi dramatičnim promjenama u starosnoj strukturi i drugim karakteristikama useljenika rođenih u Jugoslaviji nakon 40 godina imigracije u Australiju.
