Feasibility of Bolted Connectors in Hybrid FRP-Steel Structures

    No full text
Due to the low weight and excellent durability of composite materials, Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) decks mounted on steel superstructures are becoming all the more common in engineering practice. Bolted joints are generally used to facilitate connections between an FRP deck and steel girders in road bridges. The connections are subjected to both high magnitude static forces as well as fatigue loading due to overpassing vehicles. With ever increasing traffic on both road and railway bridges, fatigue performance is of critical concern. Bolted FRP joints have been extensively researched in the past under static loading, but less is known about the fatigue and creep behaviour of such joints. Furthermore, little research exists on non-pultruded FRP profiles connected using bolted connections. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate connectors’ feasibility by means of static, fatigue and creep experiments on four different types of bolted joints comprising mechanical connectors and injection techniques. The study focuses on application in vacuum infused GFRP panels with integrated webs made of multi-directional laminates, connected to steel bridge superstructures. In addition, experimental results are validated by Finite Element Analyses (FEA). Based on the obtained results, the novel injected steel-reinforced resin (iSRR) connector developed at TU Delft shows promising potential in hybrid steel-FRP bridges where good fatigue endurance of the connection and local loads in FRP panel, are required.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Steel & Composite Structure

Shear Force in Bolted Connection Due to Traffic and Temperature Loads in Hybrid Steel-FRP Bridges

    No full text
As many bridges are reaching the end of their service life, researchers are searching for new solutions to extend the lifespan of those bridges. Fibre reinforce polymers (FRP) could be possible a solution for bridges with deck problems. Lightweight FRP decks can be installed quickly via bolted connectors on steel substructure. In general, shear force in the connector is not taken into account during the design of FRP decks because slip behaviour and interaction with steel substructure is unknown. This research connects to research at TU Delft on non-slip shear connectors for FRP decks. Aim of this paper is to quantify shear forces in bolted connectors due to traffic and temperature loads. The direction of webs, fibres in panel facings and the expansion coefficient of resin has been investigated to determine the influence of the FRP deck on the shear force in the connectors. To investigate the results of traffic loading and temperature loading on real bridges, a database of bridges in the Netherlands has been used. Results from the analyses offer an indication of the influence of the laminates on the shear force in the connectors and show shear force ranges that can occur in existing bridges.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Steel & Composite Structure

The contamination of aquatic ecosystems by heavy metals has been identified as a significant environmental hazard for aquatic animal species, including fish. The objective of this study was to investigate the tolerance of Vagococcus salmoninarum bacteria to copper and the impact of copper exposure on antibiotic susceptibility. The bacterial isolates, comprising six strains, were obtained from rainbow trout reared in cage culture at Kılavuzlu Dam Lake. The initial assessment of antibiotic susceptibility was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, which was subsequently validated through the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The broth microdilution method was employed, with the bacterial isolates exposed to concentrations of copper sulphate ranging from 0.1 to 1 mM. The resistance to multiple antibiotics was altered to be significantly altered following exposure to copper sulphate. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of copper was observed to be 0.4 mM against V. salmoninarum. It was noted that V. salmoninarum, which has been exposed to copper in its natural environment, has developed the capacity to withstand stress and has undergone a change in its physiological status

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Diplostomum sp. in a total of 192 fish of five different species (Carasobarbus luteus, Acanthobrama marmid, Chondrostoma regium, Capoeta trutta and Luciobarbus mystaceus) obtained from four regions of Atatürk Dam Lake (Sitilce, Samsat, Hösürge and Gerger). The presence of Diplostomum sp. was identified in 149 fish specimens, while it was not detected in 43 fish specimens. It was established that the minimum and maximum parasite presence levels ranged from 1 to 209. The fish species with the highest mean parasite density were Chondrostoma regium (19.30), Acanthobrama marmid (14.13), Carasobarbus luteus (13.15), Capoeta trutta (11.5) and Luciobarbus mystaceus (9.71). The study demonstrated that the prevalence of Diplostomum sp. in fish from Atatürk Dam Lake varied according to both region and species

Solution of Leakage Problem in a Guarded Hot Plate Device

    No full text
AbstractThe conduction heat transfer coefficients of the fibrous insulation materials depend on temperature, especially under high temperature conditions. In this study, the device, called guarded hot plate (GHP), measuring the heat transfer performance of insulation materials under high temperature conditions is improved. Circulation of the cooling fluid inside aluminum cold plates is optimized by numerical results. To prevent leakage of the fluid, metal pipes are inserted into the conduits aiming the fluid to circulate throughout these pipes. Following the design, the cold plates are manufactured and the computational results are validated by the experimental ones. By the new designed cold plate, the system operates and achieves validated measurements for the thermal conductivity of the fibrous insulation materials, under high temperature conditions

Korhan Deniz Dalgıç (MEF Author)This paper focuses on rehabilitation/strengthening of damaged concrete prisms through external carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) jacketing. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the strengthening method on the damaged concrete prisms, an experimental study including 22 concrete prisms with square and rectangular cross sections was carried out. The parameters of the experimental study are the damage levels. Furthermore, effects of loading scheme (monotonic or cyclic) and cross section type (square and rectangular) were investigated in the existence of damage. The concrete prisms were tested under compression stresses up to three specified axial deformation levels to be representative of slight, moderate, and severe compression damages before strengthening. Tests were repeated after rehabilitation/strengthening of damaged specimens with CFRP jacketing. Test results showed that CFRP rehabilitation/strengthening was effective on enhancement of strength and deformability of the damaged concrete prisms. However, the efficiency of the strengthening method in terms of compressive strength tended to reduce when the level of damage increased. Furthermore, an available model is modified to include the effects of damage level, and the modified model is shown to produce accurate results. The Groove Effect on Wake Characteristics of Rotating Cylinders

    No full text
In the present study, active and passive flow control methods have been implemented to investigate their effects on the wake flow structures of a circular cylinder. Grooves having circular, rectangular, and triangular cross sections have been applied to the cylinders exposed to the rotation rates, α, from 0 to 0.79. The experiments have been conducted by particle image velocimetry at a Reynolds number of Re = 5 × 103. The contour graphics of time-averaged results have been presented. Moreover, the variations in velocity profiles have also been depicted. The experimental results revealed significant variations for flow patterns, wake structures, and turbulence parameters due to the effects of both groove geometries and rotational motion. In the stationary cases, for turbulence intensity, the circular grooved cylinder exhibited a 15% increase, while the triangular grooved cylinder showed a slightly higher increase of around 20% compared to that of the bare cylinder (BC). Conversely, in non-stationary cases, the rectangular grooved cylinder displayed the most prominent reduction in turbulence intensity, decreasing by approximately 10% compared to that of the BC. The groove type has considerably affected the flow structures of the wake regions, especially for the lower rotation rates. © 2024 Author(s)
