Three (Marginal?) Questions Regarding Convergence
No full textThis paper focuses on three (marginal?) questions surrounding the analysis of economic convergence and uses Spanish provinces as a means of illustration. The three questions in hand are the following: (i) given that the geographical units of analysis are usually quite different in economic size, is the weighting of economic units relevant in convergence analysis? (ii) the average per capita income of a given region, or country, is the first moment in the distribution of income, but what about the second moment, inequality? Have we converged in inequality? and (iii) an aggregate welfare index must take into account, at least, the evolution of the first two moments of the distribution of income, and so does the adjustment for inequality make important differences in the evolution of average per capita income? The answer to the first two questions is yes, but to the third it is clearly no.Convergence, income distribution, inequality indices and regional analysis

No full text[ES] La figura de Javier Goerlich Lleó, arquitecto y urbanista de la primera mitad del siglo xx, resalta entre sus coetáneos valencianos por los cuantiosos dibujos que apoyaban la documentación técnica de sus proyectos. Se trata de un legado gráfico atractivo y eficaz que aportaba realidad visual al proyecto mediante perspectivas cónicas, esmeradamente delineadas y coloreadas con acuarela, que anticipaban con gran detalle el resultado formal del proyecto. Utilizando diversos formatos, Goerlich recorre mediante sus dibujos las distintas escalas de aproximación a la ciudad, desde las grandes intervenciones urbanísticas hasta la definición arquitectónica de numerosos edificios públicos y privados. En el artículo se analiza una breve muestra del amplio y diverso contenido de las imágenes producidas por el estudio profesional de Javier Goerlich en la ciudad de Valencia.[EN] Javier Goerlich Lleó was an important valencian architect and urban planner from the first half of the 20th century. He stood out among his contemporaries’ architects for numerous drawings that supported the technical documentation of his projects. The attractive and effective graphic legacy brought visual reality to the project using conical perspectives, carefully delineated and watercolours. This material anticipated in great detail the final results of the project. Javier Goerlich used his drawings to explore the different scales of approach to the city, from major urban scales to the architectural definition of numerous public and private buildings. The paper presents the main findings on personal income distribution for the Spanish provinces over the period 1973-91. The information comes from the three structural Household Budget Surveys and has been elaborated by the authors on a homogeneous base (available at: http://www.ivie.es). It starts by reviewing the information provided by some dispersion statistics, including kernel density functions, applied to the provincial Gini indices and Lorenz percentiles. It goes on to test, making use of an ANOVA model, two propositions related with intertemporal and interprovincial variations in inequality. Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
