In turbulent flows of practical interest, turbulence interacts with confinement and external forces, leading to statistical inhomogeneity and anisotropy. Isolating their contributions to some targeted statistics is indispensable for understanding the underlying physical phenomena. The aim of this thesis has therefore been to gain further insight into direction- and scale-dependent anisotropy in a set of idealized and realistic contexts. Both spectral space and separation space statistical characterizations have been employed. The spectral characterization concerns the anisotropic statistics of turbulence under the form of directional energy, polarization and helicity spectra. The separation space characterization is built on two-point second- and third-order velocity increment moments, and two-point velocity correlations. First, we studied the effect of large-scale spectral forcing. The considered forcing methods are the non-helical and the helical Euler scheme, and the ABC-scheme. We showed that both forcings have a drawback in that, if the number of sufficiently excited modes is too low, anisotropy is bound to arise even at small scales. In the case of Euler forcing, this depends on both the range of forcing wavenumbers and its helicity contents. The ABC forcing, for which the amount of injected helicity cannot be controlled, excites only six modes and therefore always generates anisotropy at all resolved scales. Our second step was to analyze the scale- and direction-dependent anisotropy of homogeneous rotating turbulence. Surprisingly, anisotropy arises at all scales even at low rotation rate. In particular, we identified two anisotropic ranges with different features. In the large scales, directional anisotropy is larger and decreases with wavenumber. At smaller scales, it is much weaker—although still significant—and slowly increases with wavenumber all the way to the dissipative scales. Another interesting and original conclusion of this part of the work concerns the role of the Zeman scale and its link with the flow scale-dependent anisotropy. The Zeman scale was previously argued to be the characteristic lengthscale separating rotation-affected scales 2 from isotropic ones. Upon closer investigation using several simulations at different parameters, we found that the separating scale between large and weak anisotropy is rather the characteristic lengthscale at which rotation and dissipation effects balance. This result, however, does not contradict Zeman’s argument about isotropy recovery in the asymptotic limit of vanishing viscosity, since the separating scale vanishes at infinite Reynolds number, and therefore only the decreasing anisotropy range should persist and scales much smaller than the Zeman one may recover isotropy. Finally, we considered the von Kármán flow between two counter-rotating bladed disks in a cylindrical cavity. We repeated the separation space analysis in different small sub-regions, in order to question the possible analogies in the flow dynamics with that of homogeneous rotating turbulence. We found that, in the regions of the domain where the mean flow has a larger average rotation rate, the distributions of the statistics in separation space display some of the features typical of rotating turbulence
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Modeling and simulation of hemodynamic flow coupled with tissue growth of arterial endofibrosis in the iliac artery
Endofibrosis is a multiscale and multiphysic vascular pathology induced by intensive practice of an endurance sport activity. The pathology produces an arterial wall thickening and a reduction of the arterial lumen calibre on a young and healthy population. Endofibrosis was addressed increasingly over the years in the vascular surgery literature but its physiopathology is poorly understood. Recently a link has been proposed between endofibrosis and another well-known vascular pathology : intimal hyperplasia. A clean understanding of the interactions of vascular cells, hemodynamics and vascular wall biochemistry is essential to completely understand the mechanisms that control vascular cell growth and the pathological onset. This manuscript is devoted to the development and the simulation of a multiscale and multiphysic model of endofibrosis/intimal hyperplasia. A novel computational multiscale framework of a bio-chemo-mechanical model for intimal hyper- plasia is proposed. Within the arterial wall, our model is made of kinetic differential equations for key vascular cell types, collagen and growth factors. The hemodynamics is modeled with the Navier-Stokes equations. Coupling hypothesis among time and space scales are proposed to build a tractable modelling of such a complex pathology. We investigate the interactions between hemodynamics, cellular dynamics and biochemistry on the development of intimal hyperpalsia/endofibrosis by applying our model to various in silico experiments. Firstly, we present a monodimensional test-case for validation by comparing the results with animal models experiments on intimal hyperplasia. Our model permits to capture many cellular phenomena which have a central role in the physiopathology of intimal hyperplasia. Results are quantitatively and qualitatively consistent with experimental findings at both short and long timescales. Then, using a compartimental approach, we simulate our remodeling and tissue growth model in an idealized 2D-axisymmetric artery on which steady hemodynamic is assumed. In silico experiments of two types of endothelial injury evaluate the responses of the model in a configuration where the wall shear stress, exerted on the endothelial surface, is distributed over the entire axisymmetric artery. Macroscopically, the behaviour of our model on the pathology-promoting and pathology-protective zones is qualitatively consistent with the experimental results. Furthermore, by considering two types of damage, we assess the influence of this initial condition on the spatio-temporal evolution of the lesions predicted by the model. Finally, in 2D-axisymmetric artery configuration, we investigate the hypothesis of pulsatile hemodynamics on the lesion evolution prediction of the model after initial endothelial damage. With the hypothesis of pulsatile blood flow, the lesion dynamic diverge quickly from that predicted in steady blood flow. This result suggests that the hypothesis of pulsatile hemodynamics is decisive on the lesion dynamics predicted by our model
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

This thesis is devoted to the study of the production of turbulent mixing by the Faraday and Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The first part focuses on the Faraday instability for miscible fluids. After evidencing the mechanism selecting the primary wave mode, we study its sub-critical transition to turbulence. From theoretical criteria validated experimentally and numerically, we find that the wavebreaking leading to turbulence originates from a parametric secondary instability at the node of the primary wave. In the second part, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is addressed within the framework of a new experimental facility. This original setup allows to stabilise the heavy fluid by means of a grid until the contact with the lighter fluid is made, in order to better control initial conditions. The purpose of the study if to determine, through experiments and numerical simulations, whether the classical dynamics of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is preserved despite the presence of the grid. Most of this work focused on understanding the mechanisms responsible for the appearance of an ascending jet when contact is made between the two fluids. The model proposed confirms that the meniscii curvature inside the holes, created by a pressure jump at the interface between the heavy fluid and air, is at the origin of the jet. This finding paves the way to a new setup in which the fluids pressures could be controlled precisely
Study and modelling of unstably stratified homogeneous turbulence
This thesis is dedicated to the study of unstably stratified homogeneous turbulence. This flow is an idealized framework introduced to investigate the turbulence developing at the centerline of a Rayleigh-Taylor mixing zone. This approach focuses on turbulent quantities, when the mean flow acts on the turbulent field through a mean density gradient.A spectral model and direct numerical simulations are used to study this turbulent flow. The validation step reveals the role of stratification terms on the energy transfer dynamic. Then, a first study shows the emergence of scaling laws in the self-similar state, together with the large scale energy distribution impact on the asymptotic state and on the flow anisotropy. In a second study, the turbulent retroaction on the mean density gradient is introduced in order to bring unstably stratified homogeneous turbulence closer to theRayleigh-Taylor turbulence dynamics. This step leads to investigate the consequences of a stratification inversion on the mixing dynamics through a variable acceleration profile
