Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Akutagawa Ryūnosuke and fragmentary writing
Fragmentary writing is difficult to define. It is, first of all, the result of a pragmatic, intuitive understanding: a text is called fragmentary when it is perceived as such. From Heraclitus, Montaigne, the Schlegel brothers to the surrealists, fragmentary writing takes many forms. However, in French literary theory, it is often limited to aphoristic texts. Its corpus is made of literary texts mostly written in European languages, which could also belong to another field (like critic or philosophy), which are non-fictional, and where fragmentation is a conscious, voluntary process of thinking and writing. This thesis aims to show, through the concrete example of Akutagawa Ryūnosuke’s poetics of fragmentary writing, the existence of a fragment outside the fiction / non-fiction dichotomy, from a non-western cultural area, which belongs to the modern fragment as crisis literature defined by Françoise Susini-Anastopoulos.In this thesis, we look at various texts written by Akutagawa. Be they narrative, fictional, non-fictional, autobiographical, poetic or aphoristic: all these texts have a common fragmentary aesthetic, despite their diversity. By reading these texts written by a Japanese writer who lived at the beginning of the 20th century under the light of Japanese and French critical works on short and discontinuous writings, we are trying to redefine the outline of a literary fragmentary writing while suggesting a new way of reading them beyond the very different generic categories they are usually thought to belong to. Accordingly, two features could describe Akutagawa’s fragmentary writing: a problematical generic categorization deliberately constructed in the texts, and an ironic voice, which is often accompanied by intertextuality. Poetics of Medicine, between Modernity and Avant-Garde, France and Germany, 1909-1937. A comparative study of the works of Artaud, Benn, Céline and Döblin
Modern culture has tended to set an opposition between humanities, natural sciences, and medicine. Yet in the works of Artaud, Benn, Céline and Döblin these disciplines come to interact in a productive and meaningful way. Coming from France and Germany in the early years of the 20th century, these writers share a medical experience that translates into distinct poetic styles which, taken together, offer a rich corpus for a comparative study such as mine. This thesis probes and pushes at the complex, reciprocal dynamics between literature and medicine across the first half of the past century. Given its practical application and its encroaching hold on all aspects of « modern life », medicine may be said to be the most human science. This is why medicine keeps a close bond with literature, in which its power, as well as its limitations, have been so stirringly expressed. Our first part examines the epistemological peculiarity of the relationship between medicine and literature in the first 20th century; in the light of our corpus and beyond, they appear then to be a double of each other. The second part focuses on the aesthetic lines of force of this encounter between art and science. These features inspire, in a third part, a close study of the ontological issues brought up by the medical and literary nexus. Finally, we try to reconsider the effectiveness of literature through medicine, but also the inverse
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Mirror games and duplications in Marcel Proust's Sodome et Gomorrhe and Le Temps retrouvé, and in Virginia Woolf's Orlando : modernism and ‘baroquism’
In common contexts of wars and scientific revolutions, the representations that melt, and sometimes haunt, the imaginary of writers of the Baroque and early twentieth century are similar. Images of an inverted world, where spaces, beings and moments are reflected, where instability and mutability are laws governing everything, the scenes and scenery of the three works of the corpus replace the harmony of the world that of the Creator, as the Bible describes it.Space, characters, lived time appear through a prism that refers to their double, diffracted, reflected first in the machine of involuntary memory. Reality is then changed into realities, places into impressions of an elsewhere, friends in chimeras, all subject to studies and interpretations constantly reevaluated. In a writing where views accumulate and overlap, Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf endlessly prolong the impressions, convolutions, arabesques that constantly differ the conclusion of the story, in favor of the spectacle of sensitive events and hero journeys through the strata of lived time.Characters in motion, Orlando and the Narrator run in search of the flesh of time, which they seem to find in their shadow and in the thrill of a moment, according to ecstatic modalities that Bernini or Caravaggio represented in their art respective.Facts of worlds of appearances, of illusions, Sodom and Gomorrah, The Time found or Orlando are not however texts making the apology of the skepticism and the renunciation of a certain form of essence: it is still necessary that it be brilliant and come into the beauty of an image that reflects the coincidence of an ephemeral vision and a poetic creation offered to the times to come
The Fable and the Map. Stevenson, a Model for Latin American Fiction (Bioy Casares, Borges, Cortázar)
The international recognition of Latin American literature during the twentieth century has been interpreted by critics as a result of a Modernist influence, mainly through the reading of James Joyce and William Faulkner. Some Latin American writers, though, pursued other strategies : Bioy Casares, Borges and Cortázar used the foundations of popular literature (fantastic, detective or horror literature, adventure novel) to reconfigure the relations between the literary field and the political, national and cultural injonctions. For that purpose, Robert Louis Stevenson’s work on popular audience and generic hybridity at the end of the Victorian era can be seen as an ideal point of reference, thanks to its complexity and constant experimentation. The aim of the present study is to analyse this process using world literature’s conceptual and theorical tools. Stevenson can thus be seen as a model to think and resolve some geographical and literary dilemmas
