    Synchronization of moving integrate and fire oscillators

    We present a model of integrate and fire oscillators that move on a plane. The phase of the oscillators evolves linearly in time and when it reaches a threshold value they fire choosing their neighbors according to a certain interaction range. Depending on the velocity of the ballistic motion and the average number of neighbors each oscillator fires to, we identify different regimes shown in a phase diagram.     A Mathematical Model of Communication between Groups of Circadian Neurons in Drosophila melanogaster

    In the fruit fly, circadian behavior is controlled by a small number of specialized neurons, whose molecular clocks are relatively well known. However, much less is known about how these neurons communicate among themselves. In particular, only 1 circadian neuropeptide, pigment-dispersing factor (PDF), has been identified, and most aspects of its interaction with the molecular clock remain to be elucidated. Furthermore, it is speculated that many other peptides should contribute to circadian communication. We have developed a relatively detailed model of the 2 main groups of circadian pacemaker neurons (sLNvs and LNds) to investigate these issues. We have proposed many possible mechanisms for the interaction between the synchronization factors and the molecular clock, and we have compared the outputs with the experimental results reported in the literature both for the wild-type and PDF-null mutant. We have studied how different the properties of each neuron should be to account for the observations reported for the sLNvs in the mutant. We have found that only a few mechanisms, mostly related to the slowing down of nuclear entry of a circadian protein, can synchronize neurons that present these differences. Detailed immunofluorescent recordings have suggested that, whereas in the mutant, LNd neurons are synchronized, in the wild-type, a subset of the LNds oscillate faster than the rest. With our model, we find that a more likely explanation for the same observations is that this subset is being driven outside its synchronization range and displays therefore a complex pattern of oscillation.Fil: Risau Gusman, Sebastian Luis.     Modelling the effect of phosphorylation on the circadian clock of Drosophila

    It is by now well known that, at the molecular level, the core of the circadian clock of most living species is a negative feedback loop where some proteins inhibit their own transcription. However, it has recently been shown that post-translational processes, such as phosphorylations, are essential for a correct timing of the clock. Depending on which sites of a circadian protein are phosphorylated, different properties such as degradation, nuclear localization and repressing power can be altered. Furthermore, phosphorylation domains can be related in a positive way, giving rise to consecutive phosphorylations, or in a negative way, hindering phosphorylation at other domains. Here we present a simple mathematical model of a circadian protein having two mutually exclusive domains of phosphorylation. We show that the system has limit cycles that arise from a unique fixed point through a Hopf bifurcation. We find a set of parameters, with realistic values, for which the limit cycle has the same period as the wild type circadian oscillations of the fruit fly. The domains act as a switch, in the sense that alterations in their phosphorylation can alter the period of circadian oscillation in opposite ways, increasing or decreasing the period of the wild type oscillations. In particular, we show that our model is able to reproduce some of the experimental results found for switch-like phosphorylations of the .     Interplay of network structure and dynamics in functional organization of the visual cortex

    The functional patterns of the visual cortex observed in some mammals such as cats, primates, and humans has allowed us to understand basic principles of organization in the structure of the cortex. However, the observation of different kinds of functional arrangement in other animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, and squirrels, called salt and pepper patterns, raise questions about which of these principles can be transferred to the understanding of visual processing in general. In order to gain insight into these basic principles, in this work we propose a simple model for the formation of spatiotemporal patterns in the visual cortex. The model is based on coupled phase oscillators that interact through an evolving complex network that is embedded in a two-dimensional Euclidean space. In this way we are able to explore the relation between network structure and functional organization. We find that the model allows for the emergence of clustered synchronized states that are spatially segregated as some orientation maps, and also synchronized states that are spatially interspersed, resembling salt and pepper organizational maps.Fil: Daza Caro, Yudy Carolina.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Nonequilibrium dynamics of the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin-glass model with Gaussian couplings: strong heterogeneities and the backbone picture

    We numerically study the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian couplings, focusing on the heterogeneities arising in its nonequilibrium dynamics.  Results are analyzed in terms of the backbone picture, which links strong dynamical heterogeneities to spatial heterogeneities emerging from the correlation of local rigidity of the bond network.  Different two-times quantities as the flipping time distribution and the correlation and response functions, are evaluated over the full system and over high- and low-rigidity regions.  We find that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the model is highly correlated to spatial heterogeneities.  Also, we observe a similar physical behavior to that previously found in the Edwards-Anderson model with a bimodal (discrete) bond distribution.  Namely, the backbone behaves as the main structure that supports the spin-glass phase, within which a sort of domain-growth process develops, while the complement remains in a paramagnetic phase, even below the critical temperature.Fil: Romá, Federico José.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Clustering and phase synchronization in populations of coupled phase oscillators

    In many species daily rhythms are endogenously generated by groups of coupled neurons that play the role of a circadian pacemaker. The adaptation of the circadian clock to environmental and seasonal changes has been proposed to be regulated by a dual oscillator system. In order to gain insight into this model, we analyzed the synchronization properties of two fully coupled groups of Kuramoto oscillators. Each group has an internal coupling parameter and the interaction between the two groups can be controlled by two parameters allowing for symmetric or non-symmetric coupling. We show that even for such a simple model counterintuitive behaviours take place, such as a global decrease in synchrony when the coupling between the groups is increased.
