No full textThe detection of the Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1) protein by immunohistochemistry is currently the only approved test predictive of response to drugs targeting the PD1/PDL1 axis. The role of this test is debated since several reagents have been used as companion diagnostics for different drugs on diverse immunostaining platforms. In addition, different scoring systems for PD-L1 immunohistochemistry have been applied in the registration studies regarding single drugs. This review deals with the various issues that are related with the immunohistochemical test for PD-L1. We discuss currently unsolved problems such as the advantages and the flaws of PD-L1 immunohistochemistry; the choice of the best reagents and the best scoring system. Finally, we review the current experiences on the role of immunohistochemistry for PD-L1 in clinical trials with immune check-point inhibitors
The abundance of yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis breeding in the historic centre of Venice, Italy and the initial effects of the new waste collection policy on the population
No full textThe yellow-legged gull Larus michahellis has undergone widespread colonization of the urban environment in the recent past. The first urban breeding gulls were recorded in the historical centre of Venice, Italy, in 2000, and by 2005 there were already 24 roof-nesting pairs, with this number increasing significantly over the last decade. In 2016, a new door-to-door garbage collection system was introduced in Venice to prevent the accumulation of rubbish in the streets and limit the trophic resources available for the species. This study provides an up-to-date estimate of the Venice yellow-legged gull urban population using distance sampling method. We also studied the effect of the new waste collection system on the species by comparing the population estimate before (2017) and after (2018) the full implementation of this change and by analysing the trend of individuals collected in the old town by the wildlife recovery service during 2010–2018. Results estimated ca. 430 breeding pairs in June 2018 showing a 36% decrease with respect to 2017. We also found a decrease in the number of 1-year-old birds and pulli collected by the wildlife recovery service starting from 2016, when the policy implementation began. Our data did not show a significant decrease in the overall number of individuals, suggesting that the new policy has a stronger effect on the breeding success of the species than on adult survival. This study emphasizes the importance of preventing rubbish accumulation in the streets as factor for reducing the abundance of urban yellow-legged gulls

Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome: Report of two cases with phenotypical immunohistochemical profiling
No full textINTRODUCTION:: Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome is a rare disorder of male organ development characterized by internal male pseudohermaphroditism. Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome is usually an incidental finding in patients presenting cryptorchidism, inguinal hernia, or a previous story of undescended testes. CASE DESCRIPTION:: We report on two cases of persistent Mullerian duct syndrome: an adult fertile male with uterus and ectopic prostate occurring as pelvic mass and a 75-year-old organ donor with uterus and two fallopian tubes, discovered in course of organ recruitment. We performed routine histological analysis and immunohistochemical profiling of the different tissue components. Examined tissues were all benign, and the living patient is well after surgery. CONCLUSION:: In order to prevent further complications such as infertility and potential malignant change, surgeons and surgical pathologists must be aware of this condition and should consider excision of the Mullerian remnant where possible
Dual TMPRSS2:ERG Fusion in a Patient with Lung and Prostate Cancers
No full textThe TMPRSS2:ERG fusion is considered prostate specific and has been rarely described in other tumors. We describe the case of a patient who developed lung and prostate cancers, both harboring the TMPRSS2:ERG fusion. The patient developed a cancer of the prostate with lymph node metastases and after two years a nodule of the thoracic wall. The histology and immunohistochemical profile of the two tumors were typical of prostate and lung cancers. The presence of the TMPRSS2:ERG fusion was demonstrated by next-generation sequencing on both malignancies, leading to the assumption that the lung nodule was a metastasis from the prostate cancer. The patient failed to respond to antiandrogen therapy, while chemotherapy for lung cancer led to a significant objective response. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a lung cancer harboring the TMPRSS2:ERG fusion, widening the spectrum of lung cancer-associated molecular alterations

No full textAzithromycin, a semisynthetic macrolides, is frequently prescribed for the treatment of middle ear and upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia. This antibiotic is usually well tolerated, and a rapid resolving cholestatic hepatitis has been described up to now only in six patients all, except one, over 65 years of age. We here report the case of a prolonged cholestatic hepatitis after administration of azithromycin in a young woman with no history of liver disease
