Accumulation and Phytotoxicity of Two Commercial Biocides in the Lichen Evernia prunastri and the Moss Brachythecium sp
This study investigated the accumulation and phytotoxicity of two commercial biocides widely used for the removal of biological colonization from monuments, namely Biotin T® (3%) and Preventol RI80® (2%), on lichen and moss model species, specifically, Evernia prunastri and Brachythecium sp. The active compounds, benzalkonium chloride (BAC) for Preventol RI80 and isothiazolinone (OIT) for Biotin T, were accumulated in similar amounts in both species without significant changes for up to 21 days. Both compounds caused a severe impairment of the photosynthetic apparatus of these species, without any recovery over time, although Biotin T showed a faster and stronger action, and the moss was more sensitive than the lichen. By shedding light on the accumulation of BAC and OIT in lichens and mosses and quantifying their effectiveness to photosynthetically devitalize these organisms, the obtained results are a useful comparison for the implementation of green alternative products for the control of biodeteriogen
The Water Content Drives the Susceptibility of the Lichen Evernia prunastri and the Moss Brachythecium sp. to High Ozone Concentrations
The aim of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of lichens (Evernia prunastri) and mosses (Brachythecium sp.) to short-term (1 h), acute (1 ppm) O3 fumigation under different hydration states (dry, [removed]200% water content, metabolism fully active). We hypothesized that stronger damage would occur following exposure under wet conditions. In addition, we checked for the effect of recovery (1 week) after the exposure. Ozone fumigation negatively affected the content of chlorophyll only in wet samples, but in the moss, such a difference was no longer evident after one week of recovery. Photosynthetic efficiency was always impaired by O3 exposure, irrespective of the dry or wet state, and also after one week of recovery, but the effect was much stronger in wet samples. The antioxidant power was increased in wet moss and in dry lichen, while a decrease was found for wet lichens after 1 week. Our results confirm that the tolerance to O3 of lichens and mosses may be determined by their low water content, which is the case during the peaks of O3 occurring during the Mediterranean summer. The role of antioxidant power as a mechanism of resistance to high O3 concentrations needs to be further investigated
Identity and regenerated landscape - an opportunity for the 'new' paper mill-museum in Tivoli.
The former Amicucci-Parmegiani paper mill in Tivoli, Italy, has been abandoned for a long time but is now the focus of a design competition for its restoration. This mill is part of a larger network of disused industrial paper mill settlements along the Aniene river, which reflect the area's history of production. The New European Bauhaus strategy seeks to revitalize old structures by incorporating new approaches. In this case, a Sapienza startup has developed a remarkable example of renovating, repairing, and reconstructing the modern built heritage. Rather than discarding the past, it is important to work with the history of buildings and adapt them to current needs. This requires understanding and respecting the materiality and history of inherited structures. The proposed intervention strategy for the Amicucci- Parmegiani paper mill aims to preserve its industrial identity while incorporating a functional program that engages the community and showcases the building's history. By following these principles, the renovation project will ensure the building's significance is maintained while meeting contemporary requirements
Identity and regenerated landscape - An opportunity for the 'new' paper mill-museum in Tivoli.
The former Amicucci-Parmegiani paper mill is a publicly-owned building in the historic center of Tivoli: long abandoned and dilapidated, it has recently been the subject of a design competition for its recovery. It belongs to a wide system of previous industrial paper mill settlements located along the Aniene river, due to availability of water; nowaday they are abandoned and testify to the stratification of a productive activity in a place inhabited since Roman antiquity. The strategy of New European Bauhaus regarding the aim to create a new approach to old, the case of study, developed through an activity of a Sapienza Startup, is a notable sample to a new approach about renewing, repairing and rebuilding the built modern heritage. With dwindling resources, it has become necessary to listen to and work with the history of the buildings rather than discard it: if we accept that each generation has the right to work with what it inherits, adapting that legacy to the conditions of use of current times, then it must also be accepted that the materiality and history, the physical and emotional weight of what is inherited can resist certain design decisions. Guided by these principles, an integrated conservative intervention strategy has been studied to preserve the industrial identity of the building, enhancing its productive characteristics with a functional programme that involves citizenship and tells the story of the Paper Mill and its industrial processes through a museum, triggering a virtuous cycle of growth, development and landscape restoration. A landscape belonging to a current ‘drosscape’ has the opportunity to push a renovation of a piece of city.
The actions of demolition of the existing heritage are triggered by the opportunity to initiate processes of economic valorisation: the case of the former paper mill represents a unicum, since the faculty of demolition - sanctioned by the constraint placed on the area and on the building - has the objective of constructing, through a complex action of demolition and a reduced activity of reconstruction, the common value of a "new urban landscape", in an area of extraordinary quality. In a framework of shrinking public resources, the value of recovering the existing heritage - specifically a fragment of industrial archaeology - represents an opportunity to validate the conservative choice over the hypothesis of building replacement, with respect to social environmental and economic variables
Con-signing. Some notes on translation
This article proposes some considerations on literary translation, starting from the problematic concept of appropriation. Engaging in an interdisciplinary dialogue with poets Antonella Anedda and Vittorio Sereni, and philosophers such as Ortega Y Gasset, Jacques Derrida and Antoine Berman, the author interrogates the ethical relationship to the other that lies at the core of any translation practice
Beginning on stage. Another interpretation of the prologue of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses
This paper aims to reconsider the problem of the speaker’s identity in the first lines of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses: who is the person, in the prologue, who says ‘I’? This problem is intertwined with two precise exegetical questions, to which a satisfactory answer has not yet been given: the first concerns the aporia introduced by the expression «quis ille», the second has to do with the interpretation of the sentence «iam haec equidem ipsa vocis immutatio desultoriae scientiae stilo quem accersimus respondet». The author first examines the problem as well as the solutions suggested by scholars so far. He then proceeds to present a new exegetical hypothesis aimed at solving the difficulty
Sull’intromissione autoriale di Apuleio in Met. 11.27
This paper discusses the problem of Apuleius’ intromission in the fictional world of his novel (Met. 11.27), where the adjective Madaurensem, which refers to the hometown of Apuleius instead of that of the protagonist, disrupts the coherence of the diegetic world. The first part of the article consists in a critical discussion of various scholarly interpretations; in the second part, the author offers a different narratological analysis through the conceptual tool of metalepsis and, finally, he formulates a new hypothesis for interpreting the passage
Comparison of the Mineral and Nutraceutical Profiles of Elephant Garlic (<i>Allium ampeloprasum</i> L.) Grown in Organic and Conventional Fields of Valdichiana, a Traditional Cultivation Area of Tuscany, Italy
In the Valdichiana area (Tuscany, Italy) an ancient native landrace of elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum L.), locally known as “Aglione della Valdichiana”, has long been cultivated. The aim of this study was to check whether there are differences in the mineral and nutraceutical profiles of the Aglione della Valdichiana cultivated conventionally and organically. Based on the analysis by ICP-MS of a wide array of major, minor, essential, and non-essential trace elements as well as rare earth elements, and the evaluation of the content of polyphenols, flavonoids, antioxidants, soluble proteins, soluble sugars, and starch, as well as the weight and water content, it was concluded that differences in the mineral and nutraceutical profiles of organically and conventionally grown bulbs were very limited. Only a statistically (p < 0.05) higher concentration of Cd (+2620%), Co (+113%), Mn (+55%), Rb (+180%), and Sb (+180%), as well as glucose (+37%) in conventionally cultivated bulbs emerged. Cadmium was the only element slightly higher than in the “reference plant,” but with a negligible risk (three orders of magnitude lower) for human health based on consumption. It is concluded that we failed to find evidence of healthier food or a higher nutraceutical quality for organically cultivated elephant garlic
