    Effect of different extraction and precipitation methods on yield and quality of pectin

    An experimental study has been conducted to determine the combined effects of different extraction conditions and precipitation method on the yield and quality of high methoxyl pectin from lemon peels. Pectin was extracted using different mineral acids (HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4) at four concentration levels (0.025; 0.05; 0.1 and 0.2 m), at 70 °C for 4 h. The soluble pectin was precipitated by iso-propanol or by an aluminium sulphate, Al 2(SO 4) 3, solution at pH 4. The extraction with HCl and HNO 3, at the highest concentrations investigated, followed by aluminium precipitation led to the best results in terms of yield (22-25%), quality and gelling power of pectin with a remarkable decrease of alcohol consumption as compared to the alcoholic precipitation under the same extracting conditions

    Comparing Hydrolysable and Condensed Tannins for Tannin Protein-Based Foams

    Tannin-based foams have gained attention as a potential bio-based alternative to conventional synthetic foams. Traditionally, namely condensed tannins (CT) have been used, leaving the potential of hydrolysable tannins (HT) largely unexplored. This study compared the performance of chestnut (HT) and quebracho (CT) in tannin–protein-based foams at different tannin ratios. Using soy protein isolate (SPI) and hexamine under acidic conditions, a series of tannin foams were produced through a mechanical foaming method and analyzed for cell structure, compression strength, thermal conductivity, and chemical stability. Results show that chestnut tannin is viable in hexamine SPI formulations but is harder to process due to lower reactivity, further resulting in higher material densities compared to quebracho. Foams with higher quebracho content featured smaller, more interconnected cells, while increasing chestnut content led to larger, less interconnected cells. Compression strength decreased ..

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Characterisation and tanning effects of purified chestnut and sulfited quebracho extracts

    Vegetable tannins are environmentally friendly tanning agents. However, they generally impart a dark colour to the tanned leather and highly contribute to the organic load in wastewaters. In this study, we employed a purification protocol separately on chestnut tannin (CT) and sulfited quebracho tannin (QT) to obtain the purified fractions (PCT and PQT). These samples were characterised by GPC, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, and HPLC-DAD techniques and applied for tanning tests. Through the purification process, non-tannin components and smaller molecules such as gallic acid, glucopyranose, and catechin were effectively removed from CT and QT, which consequently led to the reduced moisture content, pH value, and lighter colour of purified fractions. The crust leathers processed with PCT and PQT showed desirable light shades. Moreover, the organic loads in PCT and PQT tanning wastewater were reduced by 13.5% and 19.1%, respectively, when compared to those in traditional CT and QT tanning wastewater. Additionally, the physical and mechanical characteristics of crust leathers processed with PCT and PQT were comparable to those processed with CT and QT. Thus, purification of vegetable tannins may serve as a feasible strategy for producing light-colored vegetable-tanned leather while minimizing organic pollutant discharge during the vegetable tanning process

    Chestnut Wood Mud as a Source of Ellagic Acid for Dermo-Cosmetic Applications

    Ellagic acid (EA) has long been recognized as a very active antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial agent. However, its low bioavailability has often hampered its applications in health-related fields. Here, we report a phospholipid vesicle-based controlled release system for EA, involving the exploitation of chestnut wood mud (CWM), an industrial by-product from chestnut tannin production, as a largely available and low-cost source of this compound. Two kinds of CWM with different particle size distributions, indicated as CWM-A and CWM-B (<100 and 32 μm, respectively), containing 5 ± 1% w/w EA, were incorporated into transfersomes. The latter were small in size (~100 nm), homogeneously dispersed, and negatively charged. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays indicated up to three-fold improvement in the antioxidant properties of CWM upon incorporation into transfersomes. The kinetics of EA released under simulated physiological conditions were evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy and HPLC analysis. The best results were obtained with CWM-B (100% of EA gradually released after 37 days at pH 7.4). A stepwise increase in the antioxidant properties of the released material was also observed.     Tannins have always been the subject of great interest for their countless properties, first of all their ability to produce functional coatings on a variety of materials. We report herein a comparative evaluation of the antioxidant properties of wood tannin-based coated substrates. In particular, nylon membrane filters were functionalized with chestnut (hydrolyzable) or quebracho (condensed) tannins by dip coating under different conditions. The efficiency of functionalization was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, which invariably highlighted the superior ability of condensed tannins to induce the formation of a functional and robust coating. The results of the antioxidant assays revealed also the deleterious effects of aerial or enzymatic oxidation conditions on substrate functionalization, being more significant in the case of hydrolyzable tannins. On the other hand, the use of oxidizing conditions allowed to obtain more stable coatings, still exhibiting good antioxidant properties, in the case of condensed tannins. The presence of iron ions did not lead to a significant improvement of the coating efficiency for either tannins. The systematic approach used in this work provides novel and useful information for the optimal exploitation of tannins in antioxidant functional coating

    A tunable deep eutectic solvent-based processing for valorization of chestnut wood fiber as a source of ellagic acid and lignin

    Three different deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based extraction procedures were rationally designed and optimized for the recovery of antioxidants from chestnut wood fiber (CWF), a clean and largely available solid waste of the tannin industry. First, a mild protocol was developed using a choline chloride (ChCl)/tartaric acid DES at 50 °C, for 90 min. Ellagic acid (EA) was identified as the only low molecular weight phenolic component of the extract. In other experiments, harsher conditions were explored involving treatment of CWF with ChCl-based DESs at 120 °C for 8 h, which afforded a solid sample characterized by high phenolic content (up to 1.0 mg of gallic acid equivalents/mg of sample) and antioxidant properties (EC50 <0.025 mg/mL in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay), and containing guaiacyl-syringyl lignin along with EA. Based on these results, a sequential two-step DES-based treatment of CWF was eventually designed, allowing to selectively obtain both an EA-enriched and an EA-free, lignin-enriched sample, with an overall 50% w/w of the starting CWF dissolved. In particular, a 2.3% w/w yield of EA was achieved, which is significantly higher than those reported in the case of DES-based processing of other agricultural wastes. The proposed tunable, straightforward, and eco-friendly approach may allow to fully exploit CWF as a green, cheap, and easily accessible source of high-value products

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
