    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Continuous Monitoring of Olive Fruit Growth by Automatic Extensimeter in Response to Vapor Pressure Deficit from Pit Hardening to Harvest

    Recently, several studies on olive fruit growth have focused on circadian monitoring as an important orchard management tool. The olive fruit growth trend is described by double sigmoid model with four growth phases, where the third phase spans from the end of pit hardening to initial fruit maturation, and the last phase includes olive maturation up to fruit drop. Environmental factors play an important role in fruit growth, with vapor pressure deficit (VPD) being a keystone factor. Our experiment was designed to hourly monitor olive (Olea europaea L. cv. ‘Frantoio’) fruit transversal diameter from approximately initial pit hardening (II Phase), extension (III Phase) until harvest time (IV Phase) in the attempt to determine whether fruit growth dynamically responds to environmental variables such as diurnal VPD change in different stages of fruit development. Automatic extensimeters were applied in open field and VPD was calculated from data of our weather station. Throughout the experiment period, the circadian model of fruit growth showed two steps: shrinkage and expansion. Almost in all days of the third phase of fruit growth, daily response of transversal diameter to VPD formed complete clockwise hysteresis loops. During the fourth phase of fruit growth, with increasing fruit maturation, the complete clockwise hysteresis loop experienced some abnormality. At the fourth stage of fruit growth there were incomplete and partial clockwise hysteresis loops. We conclude that hysteresis can be employed to detect the shift between the end of the third phase (cell expansion) and the beginning of the fourth phase (fruit maturation) of fruit growth. The disappearance of the complete clockwise hysteresis loop and the substitution with incomplete, or partial clockwise hysteresis loops was observable only in the fourth stage of fruit growth. These results can be valuable for any smart fruit management of olive fruit production

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    An easy methodology for frost tolerance assessment in olive cultivars

    Introduction: Olive cultivation, like other evergreen fruit crops worldwide, is limited by the occurrence of frost episodes in different times of the year, mainly in winter or early spring. Some contradictory results are reported about cultivars’ response to frost, which depends on the physiological stage of the tissues (acclimated or not acclimated) when the cold or frost episode occurs. This work aimed to implement a user-friendly and reliable lab method for discerning frost tolerance. Methods: Our methodology considered both detached leaves and potted plantlets. The optimal temperature at which damage differentiated between cultivars was evaluated, as well as the time of exposure to cold and the recovery time for the correct evaluation of the symptoms. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of damage on both young and mature leaves was conducted. To validate the efficacy of the methodology, assessments were conducted on the cultivars ‘Arbequina’ (tolerant), ‘Picual’ (moderately tolerant), and ‘Frantoio’ (susceptible) under acclimated and non-acclimated conditions. Results and discussion: The results indicated that, when detached leaves were used for frost evaluation, a temperature of -10°C ± 1°C for 30 min and a recovery time at 26°C for 24–48 h after exposure to cold are enough to induce damages on the leaves and discriminate between cultivar susceptibility. Under these conditions, a precise assessment of symptoms can be made, facilitating the categorization of frost tolerance level in various olive cultivars. Notably, no significant differences were observed between young and mature leaves during the evaluation process. On the other hand, the critical temperature to assess damages on potted plantlets was determined to be -7°C ± 1°C. In addition, it was observed that acclimated plants exhibited fewer symptoms compared to non-acclimated ones, with ‘Frantoio’ being the most affected alongside ‘Picual’ and ‘Arbequina’. Conclusion: The implemented methodology will allow the assessment of frost tolerance in several olive cultivars within a short timeframe, and it is proven to be user-friendly and reliable

    Root distribution in fruit orchards with conservative soil management

    Soil conservation through an agro-ecological approach is fundamental in modern and sustainable fruit production. A vegetal cover of the soil has multiple advantages, it limits soil erosion and nutrient leakage, ameliorates the soil structure and microporosity, reduces soil temperature, increases soil water retention and soil organic matter content. Moreover, it enhances the whole orchard biodiversity maintaining a higher number of herbaceous species and macro and micro flora and fauna and providing additional agro-ecological services. However, management needs to be carefully studied because the vegetal cover can be a competitor to the fruit tree for water and nutrients. In particular, the presence of herbaceous species will influence root development, growth, distribution and function. This is particularly important in modern fruit orchards, where tree densities are increasing, and roots systems have a smaller soil volume to be explored. The alternate use of different soil management techniques has been tested in a biodynamic farm in central Italy and, in the present study, the distribution of tree root system was evaluated. A yearly rotation of spontaneous cover, shallow tillage, cover crop and green manure lead to different root distribution and depth in the inter-row, with a more homogeneous root distribution where aerating grassing was applied
