Netlore, Memes and the Pandemic: Adjusting Virtually to the New Normal
Abstract
Starting from the assumption that “(t)he worldwide COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has monopolised news reports and public discussion in traditional media and on social media” (Dynel 2020, 2), this paper explores the relevance memes have had in the COVID-19 emergency (Giordano and Marongiu 2021a; 2021b). Memes represent the vernacular discourse of netizens, or user-created derivatives produced by Internet users belonging to the participatory culture (Shifman 2014), otherwise deemed as netlore (Sánchez 2019), a kind of folklore comprising humorous texts and art. Internet memes, as a virus, have a high power of replication (Wiggings 2019). This work looks at how virtual platforms became the space for social participation on the pandemic debate. In particular, proand anti-vaccine memes were a way to cope with the stressful times throughout the period 2020-2021. A corpus of static online memes in English is investigated to ascertain how the treatment of the disease and the vaccine issue are framed figuratively, both verbally and visually, through the use of metaphors, similes, intertextuality, and other rhetorical features. Memes are considered as examples of Netlore, or digital contemporary folklore aimed at adapting to life in the new normal

Il carteggio Gianfrancesco Malfatti - Giordano Riccati
Gianfrancesco Malfatti (1731-1807), one of Vincenzo Riccati’s brightest students during his teaching years in Bologna, following his master’s death begun a significant scientific correspondence with Vincenzo’s younger brother Giordano (1709-1790), an eclectic scholar and author of a treatise on acoustics. The correspondence, which is published here in full, is kept in the Public Library Vincenzo Joppi of Udine, and cover a wide time span from October 1777 to May 1789, a few months before Giordano’s death. It consists of 125 letters, 61 by Malfatti and 64 by Riccati, the latters being copies made by Riccati himself. The topics discussed range from different areas of mathematics: logarithms of negative numbers, calculus of variations, probability and combinatorics, mathematical physics, in particular mechanics and acoustics
The ethics of thinking in Heidegger, Bruno & Spinoza
The aim of the present work is to face Heidegger’s claim that philosophy has ended.
Facing this claim for us has not taken the form of creating a new method or positing a
new question but that of a search for anomalies in what Heidegger decrees as
finished, which is philosophy as metaphysics. In his historical confrontation with the
history of thought Heidegger seems to have left out, dismissed or forgotten those
authors who do not fit into his definition of metaphysics. We have chosen Giordano
Bruno and Baruch Spinoza, metaphysical thinkers who have undertaken a
philosophical practice that does not intend to demolish subjectivity but actually
begins without any need for it. The birth of the subject as grounding reality finds its
affirmation with Descartes and inaugurates modernity that, according to Heidegger,
exhausts philosophy and leads it into the arms of modern science and technology.
Bruno and Spinoza respectively precede and follow the birth of modernity and of
modern science, which they look at with an eye that is not that of the modern subject.
Following their different approaches to philosophy, we shall also explore their
relation to Renaissance Humanism, dismissed by Heidegger as a historical reiteration
of the Roman world, perceived as a perversion of the Greek origin of thought. We
shall show how hasty such a dismissal is. Our goal is to show not merely that
Heidegger is wrong but that if Western thinking contains the seeds of its own end, it
also contains the ones of a different understanding of the Western world and its
achievements. The three authors will engage on the grounds of ontology, gnosiology
and ethics and yet we have defined the whole enterprise of this work as an ethics
overall. An ethics of thinking is a practice of thought that wishes to envisage the
possibility for Western man of inhabiting his own world by understanding himself
not as an isolated subject and master of nature but as the place where the unity and
multiplicity of nature come to be thought at the same time
Effects of Plant-Based Biostimulants, Used Alone or in Combination, on Yield and Quality of Rocket Plants
The climatic conditions over the last few decades were estimated to be the warmest of any previous decade using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Climate change refers to anomalous, intense, and catastrophic climatic events directly linked to an increase in temperature on Earth. These include hurricanes, floods, melting glaciers, etc. In this context, agriculture is subject to strong abiotic stresses that compromise food safety. It is therefore necessary to resort to agricultural practices that reduce the impact of agriculture on the environment and guarantee crop production. An important answer to this problem comes from the use of biostimulants in agriculture. These are microorganisms and molecules of natural origin able to increase fertilizer effectiveness by limiting their use. In this study, two different plant-based biostimulants were used alone and in combination to test their effectiveness on production, mineral content, and some quality parameters of greenhouse-grown rocket plants. Biostimulant treatments showed an average increase of 48.1% in the total yield and of 37.2% in the dry biomass of the plants compared with control plants without significant differences among treatments. Increases in chlorophyll, calcium, magnesium, and potassium were also detected in the presence of the two biostimulants. The vitamin C content increased compared with the control when the two biostimulants were combined. This study focused on biostimulants as eco-sustainable products able to increase the yield and quality of crops such as rocket plants
