Establishment of warm-season turfgrasses in a Mediterranean transition zone under simulated waterlogging

The Mediterranean region is expected to experience increased extreme precipitation events with the risk of inland flooding because of climate change. This may adversely affect the establishment of warm-season turf species, usually selected for low water consumption. A simulated waterlogging experiment was conducted at the University of Padua in northeastern Italy during the summers of 2017 and 2018. Four bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) cultivars (La Paloma, Transcontinental, SR 9554, and Jackpot), 'Pure Dynasty' seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz), and 'SWI 2000' buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.] were compared under waterlogging conditions. The response of the three warm-season species to four waterlogging events during establishment at two different seeding rates was investigated. The number of seedlings, percentage green coverage, and NDVI were measured. At the end of the experimental periods, the dry weights of the above-ground biomass and roots were also determined. All the cultivars tested demonstrated high tolerance to waterlogging in the early stages of establishment. Moreover, they produced a significantly higher number of seedlings per unit area when sown at the higher seeding rate

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Seeding time affects bermudagrass establishment in the transition zone environment

Bermudagrass is becoming increasingly popular in the Mediterranean transition zone of Europe for establishing new sports and recreational turfgrasses. In these regions, the quality and winter hardiness of bermudagrass turf is influenced by the establishment. It has been demonstrated that an early establishment of bermudagrass results in a longer growing season with a greater stolon and rhizome production, which favors cold hardiness and a quicker green up after the first winter. Dormant seeding is reported to be beneficial for an early establishment. However, the response to early seeding depends on local environmental conditions. A field study was conducted in northeastern Italy during spring 2018 and 2019. Four bermudagrass cultivars ('Transcontinental', 'Jackpot', 'SR9554', and 'La Paloma') were compared under three seeding times from March to May to evaluate whether early spring seeding allows anticipating the establishment of bermudagrass compared with late spring seeding which generally benefits of better temperatures for germination and growth. The number of days from seeding to the emergence and from seeding to the full establishment were determined, and the number of seedlings was counted in each plot. Late March seeding assured the earliest establishment. This result could be due to the quick lateral spreading of seedlings as the emergence occurred about 15 days later in the late March seeding compared with April and May seedings. Results also displayed that the speed of establishment was positively related to the number of emerged seedlings. 'Transcontinental', 'Jackpot', and 'SR9554' performed similarly, whereas 'Jackpot' showed a slower establishment

Germination and seedlings response of bermudagrasses under water submersion

Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) at the mature stage is quite tolerant of submersion, but little information is available on the effects of submersion on seed germination and seedling development. Five cultivars (‘Jackpot’ 'La Paloma’, 'Transcontinental' “Yukon’ and 'Sunbird') were compared in two experiments conducted in growth chamber and greenhouse. Germination percentage in Petri dishes under 'seed floating’ (0, 2, 4, and 6 days) and 'seed submerged' conditions (0, 2, 4, and 6 days) was measured while in the greenhouse four out of five cultivars were also tested, except for 'La Paloma'. Seedlings growth under 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days submersion was evaluated. In the lab, the cultivars tested displayed a different response to submersion and floating treatments. 'Jackpot' 'Sunbird', and 'Transcontinental' showed the best tolerance to both floating and submersion conditions. In the greenhouse experiment, bermudagrass seedlings appeared to have short-term resilience to flooding, as long as it is not prolonged. All the cultivars showed good tolerance to submersion during germination, while submersion for 6 and 8 days resulted in a significant increase in the average proportion of yellow seedlings

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Forme del potere (mafioso) e pratiche di resistenza nello scenario globale. Questioni teoriche e indagini sul campo. Introduzione

    No full text
The paper introduces and presents the theoretical-conceptual framework which informs the reflection on the forms of Mafia power and resistance practices activated both at a subjective and community level addressed in the articles that make up the thematic focus. Starting from the changes related to neoliberal globalization processes and their impact in the sphere of law and the State, the authors reflect on the manifestations that mafia power (in its various expressions) assumes in the contemporary world, within the criminal organizations addressed in the empirical contributions and in the network of external relations that consolidates them, in very different geographical, political, economic and cultural contexts (such as, for example, Sicily, Nigeria and Mexico). The analysis shows recurring topics linked above all to the pervasiveness and persistence of some distinctive characteristics of Mafia power, such as, for example, the use of physical and symbolic violence, the control of the territory, the ideological and cultural patriarchal legacy, the ability to exploit traditional culture. At the same time, the forms of opposition to the criminal-mafia power are highlighted both in the dimension of everyday life and in that linked to the progressive emergence of a growing political subjectification of citizens and groups who denounce its oppression and demand justice
